Smile Obinocle exam experience and advice for others...

FIRST OF ALL WANT TO THANK YOU GUYZ FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND WELL WISHES AND ALL THE HELP I RECEIVED ON THIS FORUM. I THOUGHT I SHOULD POST THIS WHILE ITS STILL FRESH IN MY HEAD.
I’LL JUST GO STRAIGHT AHEAD …..

IS FIRST AID GOOD ENOUGH? ABSOLUTELY!!! EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS THERE… IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH PHYSIOLOGY and PATHOPHYSIOLOGY THEN YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO LECTURES OTHERWISE IT’S FINE. ALSO DOING A LOT OF QUESTIONS HELPS YOU SOLIDIFY THE MATERIAL AND KNOW HOW THEY CAN ASK YOU QUESTIONS FROM IT. , MICOBIOLOGY PHARM IMMUNO BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOSTATISTICS IS PERFECT IN FIRST AID. IF YOU ARE DOING QUESTIONS, YOU DON’T NEED ANYTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KNOW YOUR BIOSTATS. It was heavily tested on my exam and They were easy give away points for me because I had gone over all the formulas SO it was a walk through FOR ME. The questions are straight to the point!!. Know all the formulas!!

COME ACROSS A CALCULATION? Solve it on the spot!!! They are not hard in any sense. If you can, don’t wait till the end of the block to see if you can attempt it.. for me waiting increases my anxiety in solvin that QUESTION and I’ll end up getting it wrong.. esp if time is running out on you. My advice is to make a separate note like I did of all the formulas you can cram a day b4 ur exam (better to start knowin them early)

DON’T SWEAT BIOCHEMISTRY!!!: Just know all the important enzymes and pathways, don’t go into detail. Doing Q banks will help in guiding you as to what you really need to know…

ARE THERE EXPERINMENTAL QUESTIONS? My Answer is NO!!!! Every Damn Question you get is solvable and there’s always a correct answer I did not see any out of this world question… even the ones I saw I’ll say it’s because I did not fully understand the concept but not to say it’s an experimental question. Don’t go in with that mindset!!!. Every question counts. Sometimes you have to use simple human reasoning to figure out what they are asking you.

ARE THERE REPEAT NBME QUESTIONS? YES!!!! YES!!! AND YES!!!! I made sure I go through all my Nbme’s before sitting for my test I can can tell you exactly 8 good questions of mine if not more "shockingly" were "NBME LIFTOFFS" So take ur NBME’S seriously, especially, 5 6 7 11 12 and 13.

ARE DRILLING WITH PEOPLE IMPORTANT? YES!!! Especially pharm and micro….. because these are easily forgotten topics. that helped me a lo because i didn't need to stress out and read much on pharm and micro.

WHICH QUESTION BANKS SHOULD I DO? like i said earlier doing questions is key in this exam. you don't need to read too many materials if you are doing questions because the more questions you do (not the more studying you do!!!!) the more wiser you get tackling those questions. and to be honest the questions you'll end up tackling on the real exam. and even on the NBME's as i recall is all tested on qbanks.

I ended up doing USMLE WORLD, USMLE RX, KAPLAN Q BANK, USMLE CONSULT, ROBBINS RAPID REVIEW PATHOLOGY. i had even subscribed USMLEASY and started playing around with their questions but time was running out on me but the four Qbanks i mentioned earlier is good enough.

I'll post more of my experience as soon as my scores come in . remember guyz it's totally doable just keep your head in the game and don't listen to peeps who you that the exam is tougher than what you see in qbanks or nbme. it's not, if you know your stuff and you're doing questions it will be a walk in the park for you. it might not necessarily be the same question but it's the same concept. if you have trained well by overdosing on questions, you'll know which answers to pick and which to cross out. PEACE!!!

i tried some of their questions and they are not that bad... only if you have sufficient time then you can do it. it's not necessarily a waste of time but i'll rank it last out of other qbanks i mentioned. but all the same, the more q's the better. it's a good one to get started with maybe. i wouldn't say memorizing first aid for topics like physiology and pathophsiology cuz u need understanding to answer questions, but topics like biochem, micro, pharm, embryology you obviously need to memorize like knowing every single word in first aid.

yes physiology was heavily tested obviously.. I did u world twice only bcoz i had to put out time and effort in other q banks not just u world...
my nbme scores in order
can't remember the timing. I never took ay nbme's twice.
NBME 6: 310 (177)
NBME 5: 380 (193) These were at the very beginning of my prep.

NBME 7: 480 (217) about 2 months out.
NBME 11: 600 (245) 6 weeks out
NBME 12: 570 (238) 4 weeks out
NBME 13: 580 (240) 3 weeks out
UW 1 : 650 (245) 2 weeks out....
the remaining time i just studied and did questions.

i remember making grevious mistakes on my nbme's so hopefully the same doesn't happen on the real deal cuz this time i was very cautious. keeping my fingers crossed for >240

people say a day before you shouldn't study anything but in my case i was just doing random blocks of questions up untill the d day... as for managing ur breaks, in my centre there was a lot of protocol to sign out. so i sat on my seat and rested my eyes and brain after each block. i went out to have energy drinks and peanut butter sandwitches only twice.

At the very beginning of my prep i tried watching kaplan videos i''ll say it helped with understanding a little bit in terms of physio and stuff but it was overkill. so when i was done i just decided to stick to reading first aid and doing questions.. i made notes out of the questions i did especially u world ad kaplan... and towards the end of my prep and before any nbme's i read through those notes i made and First aid.

you're definitely able to improve if you do more questions than studying IMO.. thatz what i did. Continuous attempt of questions will show you your weak areas and stuff you think you knew well but you dont'. during the last two weeks of my prep , i just kept doing random blocks of questions and correcting myself on the spot if i miss a question.

u don't need to look at pictures to answer questions ... if you are smart and have been doing questions, u'll kno what they're asking.. for e.g a man who has GERD and is a smoker and they show you a slide of the lower "1/3" of the esophagus.... without seeing the slide you know that is a "metaplasia" i got a couple of murmur questions that you can answer without listening to the audio. e.g IV drug user with a blowing murmur is most likely tricuspid regurg, a kid that has difficulty breathing after birth and they project a slide and point at some **** on the slide which i know nothing on of course looking at the question already i know it's lamellar bodies a woman that cannot conceive and they project an xray of the uterus and it looks funny to me like it had two horns, though i really don't kno wat i'm seeing but one of the options said bicornuate uterus and it seemed to me like the best answer......... ... **** like that!!!

Default USMLE Rx or Kaplan Qbank

Hi,
Thanks for posting such a great exam experience. My question is as a secondary q bank, would u say Kaplan or Rx and why. Also, I have done some subjects from Kaplan almost twice (biochem, physio, micro/immuno) and half of pathoma. Do u think I should switch to FA and UW. It seems I am stuck with Kaplan in a vicious cycle (read and forget) forever. Thanks for your help.

The reason why u're reading and forgetting is probably bcoz u're not doing questions... do questions more than you're reading.... usmlerx and kaplan qbank are both good in my opinion i'll say you should do both!, but if you were gonna choose one over the other then kaplan is better... IMO. U Don't necessarily have to switch to FA if you're reading kaplan as a primary book. but just make sure you are doing questions. and yes u world is very essential. but i'll say most of everything u need to kno is in FA... so it's ur pick..

Thank you for sharing your experience obinocle!
I keep having trouble with neuroanatomy questions and I want your opinion.. First of all did you use any supplementary source for Neuroanatomy and brain CT or you think just by questions and FA i ll be able to boost my % in this subject? i keep doing questions and all my percentages are improving but neuro stays like 20% and i was thinking of trying to study from another source.. Did you see any CT questions asking to poing the site of the lesion or asking about blood supply in specific areas etc?
ooh also where there any questions regarding gene translocations (like the bcl-2 etc)?

yes i had neuro CT questions where i was asked to identify lesions and yack yack but thats in first aid... + if you do questions esp the likes of those on u world and kaplan you'll kno how to answer those.. i didn't use any extra material... i'm not sure had gene translocation questions.
