Smile fat1iscool Step 1 experience

Hey everybody,

It seriously pleases me to no end to finally be the author of a thread such as this one . I just got back home from the Prometric center and I would like to post about my experience, but before you read on, I have to warn you that it could get quite long and maybe even boring

First a little about me: I'm a medical student, and I've been preparing for the Step 1 for about a year (had loads of interruptions in between with researches, assignments, clinical postings, you all know how it is). I'm just an average student so I'm sure some people can prepare in a shorter amount of time.

Materials I used: Kaplan lecture notes and videos (only once)
First aid 2011
Goljan Pathology (didn't use audios)
Conrad Fischer's 100 ethics cases (not needed)
Biostatistics for the USMLE
Offline Kaplan Qbank (didn't complete it)
Online UWorld

How I studied: I used the TAUS method, with some adjustments made as needed. After incorporating all of KLN into FA, the reading became easier and didn't take up much time. Like I said before, I prepared for about a year, but my serious studying was for about 2 months. It's a short time I know, but I was unable to get seats in Prometric any other time.

How my exam went: Strangely enough, my mind is a complete blank on this. Surprisingly, very little of pharmacology, biostatistics, microbiology, anatomy and behavioral sciences was tested. Pathophysiology was very heavily tested (CVS and renal in particular) with loads of those "up and down" arrow questions. "Quote" questions were few and far between and biostatistics was about 1 question per block (really easy, except one in which my answer wouldn't match the choices given.....super annoying!). Unfortunately, biochemistry wasn't tested much either (it's the one thing I'm good at) nor was microbiology or immunology (another thing I rock at). I had 2 cardiac murmurs, none of which I could identify from the actual audio, but the clinical scenario was enough to make the diagnosis. The CTs and slides were not too bad, I could interpret a few (I suck at that). Hmmmmm, well apart from the exam being literally full of pathophysiology, there wasn't much else. Neuroanatomy wasn't very frequently tested either.
I've always been able to complete the UW tests with about a half hour to spare (I'm super quick but unfortunately, not super-right) so at the end of the day, I had like 3 hours of break time left. There was definitely plenty of time per block. I took breaks after every 2 blocks.
The Prometric people were very nice and helpful. However, the fingerprint scanning thing seriously hated my fingers, and no matter how many times I tried, it wouldn't detect them (should I have tried my toes do you think?? LOL joking ) so I did my exam without scanning them. I hope it doesn't effect my result or whatever.

My UW and NBME scores:
NBME 12: 211 (done on 1/3/13)
NBME 11: 222 (done on 1/23/13)
NBME 13: 229 (done on 1/28/13)
NBME 7: 236 (done on 2/1/13)
UW: 66%
Kaplan Qbank: 68% but I completed only 58%
all NBMEs done offline

Now what I would like you all to do: pray for me.....please? :sorry:
I was expecting my exam to go better than it went, and I had to give my exam earlier than I planned due to non-availability of seats. Man, I hope I pass and with good grades too iA!! :sorry:

Good luck to all of you!!

May we all score awesomely!!

Thanks so much fr the helpful and well described post! Hope you score really well inshallah! and the less prep time towards the end wouldnt matter in the end!
i want to know you spaced out your nbmes over a month before the exam. when do you think it should ideally be taken? like i have over 2months left, and uworld yet to do. so when do you suggest i take the first nbme? also which ones to start with and which ones more closer to the exam date?
ps: yes will pray for you to get your desired score inshallah

I actually took the first NBME before starting UW. After I gave this NBME, I started UW and reread all of FA and Goljan, as is written in the TAUS method.

Thank you so much usbound. May God help you get the score you desire too.

I did my first NBME just before starting UW (a month before my exam). I've done a total of 4 NBMEs (would have done all if I had more time) and I spaced them evenly through out the month I had left.

I think you should do an NBME now (save 7 and 13 for the end, in my opinion) and the rest you could do at regular intervals throughout your prep.

Good luck!

I would just simply read a chapter in KLN and the same topics in FA and I would write down everything that was extra in KLN but was missing in FA. I would either write in the margins or on Post-its. It's not as tedious as it sounds and at the end it would save a lot of time.

Hope I explained it properly

I am preparing for step 1 and hope to take it in early May. Incorporating KLN into FA is what I did in my first read which I have just completed. My FA now fits in two binders as I read the KLN and made notes and sometimes just inserted the pages into the FA. I take those two binders wherever I go, plus my Pathoma book...best move I ever made...I hope this pays off. I hope this helps.fat1iscool Step 1 experience-uploadfromtaptalk1360422990460.jpg

Hi there,

I personally haven't done DIT so I can't say anything about that. If I were in your place, I would be going over the questions I got wrong in UW and also the marked questions.
