Neuro Most common cause of Meningitis?

What is the most common cause of meningitis in adults (lets say 40 years old) because in first aid it says N.Meningitidis is most common from age 6-60 years old and in UWorld it says S.Pneumo is.

From Wikipedia (verified by citations):

Quote:
In adults, N. meningitidis and S. pneumoniae together cause 80% of all cases of bacterial meningitis, with increased risk of L. monocytogenes in those over 50 years old.[3][4] Since the pneumococcal vaccine was introduced, however, rates of pneumococcal meningitis have declined in children and adults.[11]

Cool

well Goljan says S. pneumo is the MCC of typical community acquired pneumoni (over 70%)....lemme check bout meningitis

Goljan says "that some authors say N. meningitidis is most common, and S. Pneumoniae is 2nd most common"

but he himself says "MCC of meningitis in Pts >18 yrs = S. Pneumoniae" and "MCC of meningitis in those pts between 1 month and 18 yrs = N. meningitidis"

Cool

Wow, after going through that thread, now even i'm confused!

Holy Jackrabbit!!!!! all i'm hoping now is that even if they give us a question about both of these that they'll include some kind of a differentiating point also.....because otherwise even the 3 best sources for USMLE step 1 have discrepancies amongst themselves (UW, FA, Goljan)
