Smile USMLE_2013 Step 1 experience

May be 228/83 doesn't sound a good score to many people but I am happy with it.

FIRST & SECOND MONTH:
I read FA twice in the first two months of my preparation. If there was any topic which I couldn't understand at that time then I would read it from some other book, or internet.

THIRD AND FOURTH MONTH:
I started doing UWORLD online and I would do it mixed, timed and unused. After completing one block, I would read the explanation of every question. Any detail which was not in FA, I would write that in FA. Beside this, I kept on reading the FA too. At the end of fourth month, I was done with UWORLD and had completed the fifth read of FA.

FIFTH AND SIXTH MONTH:
In these two months I read FA four times. Everyday, I would try to read almost fifty pages of FA. And also read the 100 cases of Medical Ethics in two days.

I scored low in Biochemistry and Genetics. I think I should i have spend more time on them or should have studied them from Kaplan.
If someone have time then I think it would be better to watch the Kaplan videos at least for Biochem, Genetics and Physiology only. The reason I used limited material for study is that I was having full time job in ICU and took my exam on weekend (without taking vacations for it).

I read FA at least 9th times and I think if I had concentrated a little more on FA then I would have easily scored 240. Because there were questions in exam which I knew can be answered from FA but at that time I was unable to recall their answers.

YOG 2008
IMG (pak)
Total duration of study 6 months with full time job.
Study material, FA, Medical Ethics (only 2 days), and Uworld(one time).

Uworld 64% (timed, unused, and mixed)
UWSA 1 230 (one month earlier)
UWSA 2 238 (2 weeks earlier)
Free 150 82%

Usmle step 1 228/83 (19th Nov 2012)

Thanx, Gagz!
Well, I can assure you that if you learn all the pathology of FA and Uworld then you would be able to answer most of the questions in exam regarding pathology. But you have to learn it well.

Mysha,
I cannot tell you that which topics are important because of two reasons---one; it is not allowed and second; In exam there are 322 questions in which they cover almost all topics in one way or the other.
So you should concentrate on all topics equally.

Default Hi..

Congratulations for the score and thanks for sharing your prep experience

Could you let me know when and how you made the decision of registering for the exam? Is there any dictum to register only when getting a particular score in an NBME? If I'm in my 1st reading and was an average student, what would you suggest?

Wish you best of luck for the next quest!

Thank you Singular,
Actually, since my first year in medical school I was dreaming about usmle but due to multiple reason I couldnt apply or prepare for it but when things got better for me then I applied for my exam. I registered well ahead of starting my preparation(almost one year ealier). And till my result I was quite nervous that whether I would be able to pass the exam or not but I guess it is natural(atleast for average doctors like us).
I started studying on 20th May and since that day, I tried not to spend a single day without studying. I remained committed, though there was anxiety but I kept on reading and finally I did it.
My number one advice to you would be---never under-estimate yourself. Always think that you are the best, but you have to study seriously in order to prove that.
I am sure that you and a lot other, can and will do it.

I was trying to study atleast 6 hours a day but sometimes 8 and 10 if I get time during duty. And on weekends I was trying to study almost 12-14 hours.

I would say it was an average of 8 hours a day. Though my study material was limited but I tried to spend a lot of time on it. In the end, I had developed page memory of FA which means that I knew that where is a particular topic, figure and table in FA and what is written there.
After reading FA in detail, try to finish it every 15 days till the date of your exam.

Thanx afshanwshaikh,
Its a book of Medical Ethics by Conrad Fisher. I took my exam on 19th Nov so I used FA 2012.
I would do one block in timed mode and then spend 3 hours on reviewing the explanations of that block and adding those points to FA which were not there.
I couldnt find a single question of Pharma in exam which was not in FA and available in Katzung. But you can listen (just once) to Kaplan lectures of Pharma and Physiology in order to understand the graphs and some detailed concepts but believe me that it will not help you in exam because in the end we can remember only FA(but I would say do it so that you feel satisfied and not blame me after scoring low-----just kidding!).
The only subject which I guess gave me hard time even after reading it from FA was this Biochem and Genetic, sort it out!

Thanx Tamm!
It was 2012.

Thanx Doctosan!
Well I dont use Alcohol of any kind but I will have something else.

I missed some easy questions in exam not because they were not in FA, but due to the fact that I was unable to recall them.

There are some nasty tables in Micro and other sections of FA, please read them once daily. Also make lists of drugs(names only) according to its group and read them daily, just once. So that when you see the name of a drug in exam you should know that from which group it is.

Default sorry for late reply

As I have already mentioned that I read FA 9 times so that mean I revised FA a lot. And I think the best way to retain a book is to read that book again and again in a short period of time.

I was an average student. I think the knowledge of FA and uworld helped me more than everything else.

My advice to you for pharma would be to read pharma from FA as many time as you can.
And for biostat you should try to understand every question along with explanation from uworld and then correlate it with FA. Always do questions of biostat in the end of a block. Because they waste time and give you tension in the middle of a block.
My performance in biostat was high and I hope you well do well.

Understanding genetics is more important. I used FA for genetics and tried to understand it from uworld and also listen to kaplan videos for genetics.
But my score were low in genetics and biochem. So my suggestion would be to read biochem and genetics from kaplan and watch the kaplan videos and then keep reading it from FA. Also uworld explanantions helps a lot.
