Unhappy my progress.. how am I doing?

Hello

I would like to take the step 1 early-mid march.. too afraid to book a test day because of my UWorld scores..
my last 7 average scores/individual test result:
62/59
60/50
57/59
62/62
60/54
56/61
57/48

overall my highest score was 65% only once.. and 63% twice.. but the last 48% got me very uncomfortable, and I wasn't that happy with my previous scores anyways. my overall correct is 55% and percentile 43rd. right now i've used 55% of UWorld (22 blocks).
what do you advice me to do in order to get a better score? are my scores bad?
also, my studying pace is slow, when reviewing a block i read every explanation, open first aid or my own notes if the topic is there and review it quick, so going over a question might take 5 minutes to 15 minutes.

my sources have been kaplan videos (once) kaplan notes (gone over them a few times overall).. first aid (i tried to do a 3rd fast read last month, i was planning to do it in 10 days but it took longer and couldn't finish it all) i listened to goljan in the car, and at night when i'm tired and concentration is low. I've just got access to pathoma, do you advice me to go over it or is it too late?

any advice on how to improve my UWold scores? am I doing something wrong or probably not efficient?
and what is the correct way to do a 'quick first aid read'.. do you guys just read it? or try to memorize and recite it/type?

I'd appreciate any replies.. thanks and good luck to everybody

I know UW scores are sometimes discouraging (mine certainly were) but you should view UW as a learning tool, rather than to test your knowledge. Take an NBME to see where you stand. Good luck!

Fat1iscool is right, the UW is a learning tool and helps you understand subjects at a deeper level, not an assessment tool. Your score averages does not predicts how well you are going to do in the exam.

If you have finished your review and would like to know how are you doing do an NBME online only. It will give a feel for the real exam that you could not get in any other way and the score is a real approximation on how you going to perform in exam day.

Please don't waste your time on old NBME exams form, they don't reflect the change of the exam of today. Try to stick to NBME Forms 7, 11, 12, 13. My exam was more like form 13.

If money is an issue and you can't afford all form online just do one or two forms after you have completed UW and have review the First Aid with notes from UW.

Good Luck with your prep.

The only thing that can tell you whether you are close to your target score or not is NBMEs not UWORLD
so if you want to take step1 in mid-march then you should do nbme 13 or 7 and see where do you fall
and then if you are not satisfied do work hard on wk subjects or systems.
in that way you gona save time and get your target.
in my opnion at least DO NBME 7 and 13 online and remember more NBMEs you do more you get picture of your original scores @ actual exam
PSO Not DO OLD NBMEs which are not available online
hope it helps
if any question feel free to ask

incognito and step in - thanks for the input.

i dont want to do the 7,13 nbme's right now cause it will show how prepared i am right now,i want to save it for it to tell me how i am before the exam.(hope that makes sense).

i know uworld is a learning tool, but what im trying to figure out is,if there is a relation in the improvement of peoples score in their uworld tests and NBME tests.
for eg: if 20 people who are averaging 50% on uworld are getting 170's in the nbmes.and those same people when they started averaging 60% in uworld started getting 200's in their nbmes. so if a relation like that exists it will be easier for us to understand that what we are doing everyday (FA and Uworld blocks) is the right way to go.i guess its upto each person to realize that on their own.thanks for the input.

Yes, Form 7 and 13 are good to have for last, the are good predictors. My exam was more like 13 in how tricky the difficult question were.

As you start your prep with UW your initial scores per block are going to be low compare to when you are approaching end of the Qbank. This is expected, right?.... In the beginning you'll be low, but in the middle of that Q-bank you should be hitting the high 50s, 60s and in the last end you should be in the 70s and 80s. There a lot of added knowledge between you first block and you last. There is almost a linear progression of improvement, but some days you do better than other. So the more questions you do in UW the better you changes of doing well in the NBMEs and the exam. To pass the exam you need have at least 65-70% of the question right.

But don't be demoralized at the beginning when you are getting those low score just be persistent with you prep (FA+UW) and you will succeed. Pay close attention to the areas where you seen to get the same questions wrong. Analyse why you got the question wrong, what it because you didn't understand the concept, the question, read to fast, the timing, etc.

Also after you don't with the UW go back and do the wrong question only, it's tedious work but it will help iron out those question that you always get wrong. Please, take notes of those difficult concept and review then every day.

Getting ready for the exam is arduous work and the more you put in to it the better in will pay.

Good Luck

thank you all for the replies!

it seemed to me like my scores on uworld won't change.. my overall correct was at 55% for a long time (im on the 22th block).. so I thought maybe i need a second read of FA.. and add pathoma when i start losing concentration and to break the monotony.. today i've done pharmacology from FA (the chapter at the start).. now i'm going to revise my pharma notes (basically the organ system based pharma).. at the end of the night if i got time i'll do some pathoma..

does that sound like a reasonable plan? or would i be wasting time?

i agree that i want to keep the most predictive to the latest.. i've done form 7 cuz someone pushed me to and got a horrible score.. so i think i'd keep form 13 for later.. which form should i do (end of this week)

also one more Q.. do you guys suggest pathoma (heard it's more recent) or goljan audio ?

thanks again for the replies! motivates me to keep going!!

Faith, If your exam is in March invest your time on finishing UW and reviewing FA. It will take you a long time to review Pathoma (like 3-4 weeks). If you have difficulty with specific subject in UW than you could use Pathoma as a reinforcement. For example, during my prep I was having difficulty memorizing the nepritic/neprotic syndromes, it never seen to stick in my head. After watching the Pathoma and googling for some mnemonic the problem was corrected. keep at it a little by little your score are going to climb.

Concentrate on finishing UW you have only done 55%!! By the time you finish it you going to be on target. And please work on you inner game and build you confidence; this is a critical part of these exams.

I'm not an expert, but I think you'd be be better off postponing it. This is an exam u really want to be ready for.Whatever ur weakness are focus on them. I think u need to be comfortable with everything and it doesn't seem u are.The exam will probably be more difficult, not easier. Is rescheduling an option?I'm sorry it sounds harsh. But, we really only have one chance at this right? Best of luck.

Do not let UW blocks predict your score. Your NBME's are the only assessments that should be used to tell you if you are ready or not. If your NBME scores are not around where you want to score then do not take the step! This exam is too important to base off of miracles.
