Unhappy Just took step 1 feels like I failed :-/

I'm sure a lot of people are/went through the same thing I am. But then I read their post and it says they are getting a 260+ on NBME's and there scared they failed... If I was getting that high on an NBME I would be extremely confident I passed... or they said they marked only 5-10 questions each block! I MARKED HALF MY QUESTIONS!!!

My nbme scores within 7 days before my exam were
NBME 13- 213
NBME 7- 207
Free 150 Q - 75% - 210

On the real exam I felt like I marked half the questions on each block, and I made a lot of stupid mistakes. It's driving me crazy to know whether I passed or not... I'm not sure if I should just admit failure and go back to studying, or wait and hope for the best. Was anyone in my shoes??? Did anyone feel like this with around my scores and pass???

Default Relax...breath....

Hi there!

You're not the only one that feels like this. Rarely do people walk out of these standardized test saying that they know they will get 260+/99...But, surely most walk out feeling like they failed.

A good friend of my got a 240 on NBME 13 as his last practice NBME before his exam...and his Step 1 score is 243. I remember he told me that he marked half of his block and he remember all the questions he got wrong from the exam. And, he went MIA for 1 month bc he knew for sure he bombed it. But, he actually got 243!!!

So, with that said...the feeling that you are having is totally normal...just know that you did your best and all your can do now is wait.

Wait....wait? Forget waiting! Celebrate!!!

If you have time, can you write your testing experiences in the forum? Thank you.

Also, you mention that you did Free 150 Q - 75% - 210. How did you convert your % to a 3 digit score of 210? Thanks!

It's good to know someone besides me marked half their questions. It's more stressful when you know some people do great on NBME and fail the real exam.. I have one friend who was scoring a 215 on NBME's and got a 196 on the real exam ( BIG JUMP), and there are plenty of people online who pass the NBME and fail the real thing. :-/

My testing experience was ok...I felt extremely nervous, could barely sleep and felt like I was going to throw-up but thankfully didn't. Got to the exam an hour early, they actually let me start early. I felt like I had time on most blocks. Some blocks I finished with 7 mins to spare, other block I only had time to review half my questions. But I always had time to finish answering everything. I took a break after every block, I actually had a friend wait/study at the testing center for me, so every break at least I could talk to someone to steady my nerves.

I felt like 5-10 questions in each block were gimmie questions. My exam had a lot of anatomy in it, like hard anatomy, a lot of location. I felt like a lot of questions that I was hoping to see wasn't on my exam.

My free 150 Q, I didn't get a chance to finish because I did it a day before my exam and was to nervous to continue studying... I ended up doing 2 out of 3 blocks with the "show me the answer" and recorded my score which was a 75%... I assume it was the same scoring as NBME... which is your score out of 200 * 1.4 - but I could be wrong.

Thank you for posting your exam experiences.

Wow, you're really lucky to have a friend there to ease your nerves. =)

"Hard anatomy"
- I struggle with this part on my NBME feedback too. What do you recommend to improve anatomy part of the exam?

"a lot of location"
What do you mean by that? Lots of location for what?

This news I'm about to tell you could ease your nerve too...but, take it with caution because you only did 2 out of 3 blocks.
- A score of 75% on the free 150 is equivalent to 229.

USMLE Free Practice Exam Your estimated USMLE Step 1 score based on the entered USMLE Free value is 229 (70% Prediction Interval = +/- 11).

That makes me feel slightly better... I just hope now that its a good prediction and I passed.

Honestly, the anatomy was so difficult I wouldn't even bother studying for it... Not unless your a surgeon your going to get these questions right. SERIOUSLY!! A SURGEON WOULD PROBABLY GET IT WRONG! I think its better to guess and move on then to spend hours trying to study for that.

By location I meant like where in the body is every muscle, blood vessle etc. is located. - which is to much to know

I just took Step 1 last 26th. And yeah, I am terribly confused.

I dont wanna expect anything. Will just accept whatever result.

Do you have an idea when we should expect the score?

thats exactly how I feel. I keep remembering my mistakes and all the questions I didnt know and its driving me nuts. I hate that it takes a month for them to give us our score. I have a feeling I failed... I know a lot of people feel like they felt that, but I dont see how people scoring a 240+ on their NBME's feel like there going to fail.

Took the Step Friday, and yeah, anatomy was a huge blow to self esteem walking out. felt like no amount of strict anatomy prep would have prepared for that. Also had lots of molecular bio data interpretations Qs that studying wouldnt not have helped prepare for except for the 3-4 questions similar on uworld that were much easier to interpret. Prior to the exam i had done nbmes 12, 13, 15 getting 257, 264, 264 respectively, feel like i passed walking out but i doubt ill get over a 230 as i was 50/50 on many questions and clueless on a decent amount as well. Have a friend that took her step yesterday and said they were ruthless with anatomy and molecular bio and stats too. wonder if they are switching up their question focus or just trying to flunk as many IMGs as they can as we take out exams earlier in the year. Dunno....

Uworld: 1st time through - timed random 78%, read all explanations and annotated FA
2nd time through - untimed tutor

Kaplan qbank: once through 68%, did mostly through 2nd year not really for step 1 prep

FA read 2x thru.

USMLE secrets 3rd edit (not necessary but surprisingly good read for car rides, gym, sitting on toilet etc.)

NBME 12 257
NBME 13 261
NBME 15 261
Felt NBME questions best represented the actual test, even moreso than uworld type questions.

Uworld assessment test 1 270
Uworld assessment test 2 270
found both to be scored easier than NBME which 94% correlates roughly to 260.

studied for almost 2 months and slept a good amount, least 10 hrs daily and worked out as many days as i could. Night before test only got around 2 hrs of sleep, i guess due to anxiety which i never really get but certainly did that night. walked out of exam thinking i got my ass handed to me but ive read many others felt the same way yet still scored well, so i guess dont sweat if this happens to you.

Overall, Uworld, FA and NBMEs are absolutely necessary.
