Default suggestion needed from worthy colleagues/seniors

I am an IMG and graduated 3 years back. For the past three years i have been trying to give step 1 but several times when i am through the mid of my preparation, something happens and my plans are disturbed. 2 times i got so ill that i had to get hospitalized, deaths in family etc etc. Now this has badly damaged my confidence since i have to face so many questions from friends and family that why is it taking so long, because they cant understand how this thing needs consistency and long term preps and when a break comes, one has to start all over again. In short a couple of times i was so stressed that i thought to just give it and get over with it but then the thought of a low pass would stop me. This has really shattered my confidence but still i havent left it and now again im preparing. I want to have a few suggestions from worthy seniors or those who have been through the journey.
In past three years i have studied kaplan notes almost thrice, goljan once n now again through the mid of it, uworld almost 50% of questions online. Now i plan to take my exam in end of may. Last time i did kaplan l.n was 3 months back but i dont have the nerves to do them again. So i am planning to do goljan this month and then in april and may i plan to do FA and uworld at least twice each. Kindly suggest me if i am going in the right direction or i need to do some ammendments since im really low on confidence. Any suggestions or comments would be more than welcome.

Default My two cents

Hi,
Don't know which part of the world you're from, but most cultures say listen to your parents, family blah blah blah. I did that, and ended up failing twice with really really awful scores.

It is your life, take control of it. Don't let other people decide when you take the exam. If you are not ready and you fail they will blame you. All this family stuff sounds good, but you and only you will be responsible for your actions. Plus think about it, when you send your application for residencies, a lot of the programs have computerized algorithms where if you fail or have a low score the computer automatically throws you out. Or are you going to tell the program director that you failed because your family pushed you to take the exam and then expect sympathy from a stranger.

Don't make the mistake I made, you decide what you want to do with your life.

As far a strategies, move on to DIT/FA/UW/Pathoma. Goljan is old school, Pathoma is gold for pathology. Try their free online lectures at pathoma.com (I'm not their salesman!!). I was in exact same situation as yours, stuck doing Kaplan over and over. In the end you will just get bored and burn out and eventually lose interest. The information will come back to you once you start DIT/FA/UW/pathoma thing.

I haven't taken my 3rd attempt yet, so just my two cents.

Dear churu,
Thanks for your reply and supporting words. Really appreciate that. Yes i think you can understand my situation since you have gone through the same. The thought of getting a low pass stopped me otherwise i was frustrated a couple of times and was almost going for the exams but cancelled them at last day. Now i think i did the right thing of not ruining my record and im really putting in my full efforts this time. I suggest you not to let yourself down by your past and buckle up and give in your best this time since no one knows what fate has for us and there might be something waiting for you. As for your resources suggestion, i appreciate your suggestion but i am not sure if trying out new resources at this point in time would help me or not, since i have done goljan before so it makes me more comfortable with it and the fact that it consolidates other subjects with pathology means that i can revise other subjects with it without the need of going back to kaplan again.
Any one else having some thoughts about this? I would appreciate that. Thanks again.

Hey there ..
I have been struggling with step 1 as well for a very long time now .. have family problems .. but my parents are very supportive but I also know they do expect me to finish with this all as soon as I can!! I have prepared so many times and then have to postponed my exam because I was scared of getting low scores ..
then last year I dropped the plan of taking this exam but later on my parents encouraged me and I decided to start all over again .. and I have started from the very begining with videos and KLN and I think it is helping me .. I have boosted up my confidence that I have to take this exam no matter what happens and will make myself and my parents proud one day IA.. so no looking back..
I am also planning to do pathoma for pathology though I have done goljan once but I think investing in patho will be fruitfull because it is heavily tested on the real exam.. well every individual is different and if you think you wont be able to do pathoma then dont do it ..
do take your time and when you are confident enough to go further then only write your exam .. dont take risk !!
good luck with your exam and good luck to me as well !!
