Default Ethics Question

Hey guys I was wondering, I have read a few different answers for this question so I wanted to confirm. IF a patient is diagnosed with a gliblastoma multiforme, and he has 6 months to live and the family says not to tell the patient. How would you handle the situation?

ask family why not to tell
tell the patient cause he is the decision maker and not the family

Thank you! I was wondering in DIT it said to not tell the patient if the family is concerned the patient would cause themselves harm or the risks outweighed the benefits. So I was confused on whether it was the patients right to know that they had the disease. I also did a question once where it said the patient should know so I was confused lol

it has to be based on what the family tell you. you have to figure out why they dont want you to tell the PT.

If there is concerns of harm or suicide if the pt finds out then its best to not tell.

it just depends on the reasoning.

Therapeutic privilege.

I would say regardless, the patient has the right to know. Unless the patient has Major Depression which involves sucidial; and it is because of this sense that the family members are trying to point out. But the rule of thumb:

1. Patient has the right to know.
2. Find out the reason(s) why patient's family members don't want him/her to know.
