Smile s126 step1 experience, 254/88

Iím an IMG. Still a medical student. Preparation took one year.
Material used:
Kaplan notes and videos the first 6 months. Other materials for supplement
FA for one month.
Kaplan qbank for one and half month
UW for 2 months
NBME 6 before UW: 240
NBME 11 after UW: 253 one month before the exam
UWSA1: 770/263 two weeks before the exam
UWSA1: 800/265 ten days before the exam
Because Iím an IMG, so I took a long time to read Kaplan notes to learn the knowledge that isnít covered in our classes. I think Kaplan series is very good, but itís too detailed. Sometimes I felt scared because I thought that is too much to remember. And I got depressed because I canít see my future clearly.
Then I started Kaplan qbank. This bank really helped me remember things. But there is no need to struggle with all the strange questions.
After the Kaplan qbank, I stopped doing questions. I just read FA another time. And I did NBME 6 and got 240.
Then I started UW. I didnít feel itís very hard but this qbank really helped me learn knowledge that I didnít pay attention to before.
After the UW, I did another NBME, got 253. I knew Iím ready for the exam.
In the next month, I just read FA again and again, did UWSA1 and 2. Anxiety and travelling occupied almost my entire time in the last week.
Then it came the big day. Iím always afraid that I canít fall asleep. But I slept well the night before the exam. Maybe itís because I was tired from travelling. Thank God. I stayed clear the entire exam except the sixth block. There are many molecular questions which Iím not good at. But I thought maybe itís because Iím weak at it that makes me to remember all those questions. Who knows?
Some suggestions:
1. Do the qbank as early as you can. It help you know the way they test us.
2. Make sure you do at least one NBME to know where you are. Itís very accurate, at least for me.
3. The exam is very fair, you paid, you gain. So donít scare yourself.
4. Focus on FA when the exam is drawing near.
ďItís fine to have a little struggle when weíre young, because youíll never know how sweet it is in the end.Ē Good luck to everyone! Iíd like to answer your questions.

yes,it spent me a year because I have to take classes most of the day.Only got time at night.
I only read the neuroanatomy part from Kaplan notes. It's well written. Other topics aren't heavily tested.

1.FA and uworld is definitely sufficient for biostats.
2.As for ethics, always remember that you should do the best for patients.Do not worry about the money. Think what do you want to get or hear from the doctors if you are the patient. Ethics is a board topic, it can be very hard and very easy. Just do as many questions as you can.
3.molecualr biochemistry and genetics have been difficult for me, and I haven't found a good book. I only use kaplan notes, do the Kaplan qbank and UW. And I got high performance on them although I felt bad during the exam. So I guess Uw is enough?
Good luck!

I did all the questions from Kaplan Qbank, randomed, timed. So I am not able to say which area is better.
I use the Kaplan qbank as a learning tool. I write notes on FA after each block. It help me remember things. But there are odd questions that make me depressed. It's much easier to do the UW after Kaplan. And I think I can get 240 after I did Kaplan only. But Uw is a must. Uw tells me how knowledge is related to each other. The Kaplan only help me remember isolated point of knowledge, but it's the basic. Different banks, different emphasis.

Congratulations.

How helpful were the kaplan videos? I want to skip the videos and do the lecture notes only. Would this be a wise decision?

Thank you.
whether to skip it or not depends on your time and you. I'm kind of OCD about the videoes and got enough time at the beginning, so I watch some of them. If your time is limited, I recommend the behavioral video.
I know someone who skips the video and got high score. So it's okay if you skip it. The lecture notes is enough.

Congratulations on the inspiring performance !

I have a question plz , since I never used Kaplan videos or books or even Kaplan question bank ,, only did most of goljan lectures , most of DIT then many YouTube videos , some Kaplan genetic questions , And uworld ,, do u think I might have missed important vital concepts by skipping Kaplan ( Cz I might be able to go retrospectively!) or is it enough what I did as long as it is well mastered
Would appreciate the reply thanks

Kaplan qbank:74%
UW: 80%
I only did these two banks, and did them randomed, timed with 46 questions in each block.

Could you tell me your average UW score?
I strongly recommeded you do one online NBME to see where you are. It's the best way to know how well you master the knowledge.

thanks.
For path, I used Rapid Review Series, which I don't think is satisfactory. For Behavioural, I used kaplan notes with its video, which I think is very good.
It's hard to say when to start it. Everyone is different. I started Kaplan qbank after I read FA for the first time. Then I started UW. Because I wrote notes on the FA when I did Kaplan. So I probably read FA three times before UW.

Yeah, it has been difficult for me to balance my study and the preparation.
I didn't take a vocation. But I stopped many my hobbies during the last year. Only spent several holidays with my family without studying. Everyone thought I'm crazy. I think everyone has to go through this tough period. It's really inspiring when you know you are stepping towards your goal.
You can do it!

Hi, I've been kind of OCD about which book to use, too. It's okay.
For anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharm, microbiology and immu, behaviroral, I used Kaplan notes. these books are good. For path, I used Rapid review series, which is not very good. I only hear part of goljan's video. I gave it up because it's unclear and takes a long time.
The books you use are good. I glanced at MRS, which is enough for micro. I didn't use pathoma, but I heard it's very good. It's not important which books to use, but you understand and master the knowledge in them. Besides, any points that wasn't covered in books will appear in UW. so don't worry.

I used mixed, timed, 46 questions a block. about one block per day. 4 to 5 hours a day for UW because I used to referring every topic on FA.

Default 7 month vs 10 month

I'm an international medicine student and I will be starting the preparation for the Step 1 with Kaplan medical in september/october. I will be buying the deluxe program in the next weeks, which includes de center-prep and the live-prep.

Here's the question, I don't know which would be better, 7 month (would be enought time?) or 10 month?

Greeting

Yes, we have to pay for it. 50$ for one test without feedback. 60$ with feedback which tells you which questions you did wrong. Here's the link
https://nsas.nbme.org/home establish your count, then choose the one you want to buy, pay with your credit card.

Default Delux program

Kaplan offers the Delux program that includes center-prep, live-prep and qbanks. But I have to choose between 7 or 10 months and 7 weeks of live-prep (includes in the 7 or 10 months). If I choose 7 month I'll have to do 3-4 month of center-prep, 7 weeks of live-prep and the time remaining for the qbanks. But if I choose the 10 months program, I would have more time for the center-prep part. What do you think?

Hi, If I may help the TS to answer.
About the time you'll need, it may varies from person to person. If you are a fresh graduate with a high performance during medschool 7 months should be enough. Even so, when worse comes to worst you can always extend your course.

Kaplan center prep is more about Visa status in my opinion. The only things that you'll get from center prep is the video lecture and visa status. The video lecture you can always get from many "other" sources.

What I would really recommend is make sure you put the self study center prep part before you start live-lecture. Consider live-lecture as your final review. After live lecture take a month to finish USMLE World Qbank, and then kill the exam. Wishing you the best!

NBME 11 is not very hard for me after UW. I read part of FA quickly before NBME11, but I took notes on it during the whole UW.
correct percentage is 91%

Make sure you understand what you read, then the material is enough. More books don't mean better results. good luck!

when I meet a problem that can't be found in FA, I will turn to Kaplan notes and other materials. You should make sure you understand every question you did on UW.
One NBME is wise. And stick to UW and FA, especially FA in the last three weeks.
Good luck!
