Question Break in Med School; Should I Quit?

hi
am in a bit of tough situation...am an img from carribean and i finished basic sciences in jan 2011. due to personal probs i had to work for almost 2 years
i started preping seriously a couple of months ago and will prolly take my exam in sept...so neway my question is wht r my chances for residency since i took such a long break between md5 and taking step 1 and did nothing clinic related...not even sure how to explain that to PDs...i do have some doctor hookups in my family but still will i be wasting my time?..cause i got 2 yrs of clinicals after step 1 to do as well...or should i just do something else...really depressed lately...thanks
P.S. am i better off or worse than old imgs who graduated like 5 years ago?

I dun see any time wasting in that. Img in certain countries have medicine course for 6 years. So 2 years of clinics r normal.

I don't think that's as big an issue as u make it out to be. As long as you have good step scores and LOR's, that's more important. Also if this issue even comes up during ur interview, just be prepared to give a good explanation of the circumstances, that's only if they bring it up. Med students are people too, so a few hiccups are to be expected. Remember people who've initially failed their steps, or who've graduated 2-3 years before taking their steps have found matches.

So get good step scores, US clinical experience and good LOR's, and you'll be fine.

Goodluck.

i agree with slowpoke
just focus on getting your score
there is a time for everything and now is the time to focus on your steps
good luck

as long as you are still doing your clinical and not yet awarded the degree from your college you are still a student... and your break was during your med school and not after you graduated so you will not be considered an old graduate!
Hope that answers your question

Just focusing on a good score, your transcript will show when you graduate whichever year that will be, so don't worry about being old, coz i don't think it will affect u that much, just focue on getting a good score, scores will play in a lot, please don't stress out of young or old IMGs ,Technically you are still a student who has just taken a break, i think thats acceptable
