Smile Koyi Experience

Status:
medical student ( 4th year out of 6)

Study/preparation duration:
15 months

Background:
below average / average student

Books Used:
Didn't use KLN .
Pharmacology = Conrad Fischer pharmacology flash cards + Kaplan videos
Physiology = BRS
Biochemistry = Lange flash cards + kaplan videos + lippincott (only genetic part )
Pathology = Goljan (but i failed to use it , was hard for me ) ...shift to pathoma ( was the best decision ever done in my life )
Cell biology = high yield series
Neuro = High Yield Neuroanatomy
Anatomy = High Yield Gross Anatomy
Behavioral science = BRS Behavioral Science
Ethics = Conrad Fischer
Biostatics = High yield Biostatistics + USMLE World Biostatistics Qbank
Microbiology = MMRS
Pathophysiology = Pathophysiology by ivan damjanov ( recommended by Goljan )
Adjuvant books :
FA 2011 ( READ 6 times dry alone ) but seventh and last time with DIT. so total 7th times
Master the boards step 3 (MTB3 ) was my nice book for cardiovascular and endocrinology

Qbanks:
USMLERx (75%)
UW ( 60%)
Kaplan Qbank (only selected subjects : microbiology , behavioral science , anatomy )

Qbooks:
Kaplan q book ( nothing special , wastage of money )
Pathology review Robbin q book ( used it in my class , and review it again during prepn , useful )

Online resources:
webpath ( did some qn over there , but was almost sometime same concept as in robbing q book , but pictures was useful though didn't finish all )
NBME 6 = 212 (5 before exam )
NBME 11 = 257 (1.5 montn before )
NBME 12 = 257 (1 month before )
NBME 13 = 268 ( 4 days before exam ) Note : this score raise after DIT . thanks to Dr Jenkins and his team .

Exam today 28 th march evaluation:
Most questions are basic understanding and classic presentation of diseases. Race, age ,endemic areas, sex/gender, cases of immigrants.
85 % ( from FA facts )
10 % ( u need to think more and u will get answer , here is where UW play good role )
5 % ( u need think more , but still u wont get answer , or remain with two answers and then u guess )
5% ( these are crazy questions , impossible to initiate your brain to think even , i was guessing and go on )

Recommendation:
Exam is all about FA ( people were coming here and say like this and used to see these kind of post , but didnt believe them as same you are not going believe me now , but that's a fact )
FA + USMLERx + DIT = will give u and make you retain all facts that u need have in yar brain in order to answer this exam.
UW = will take you one step above having facts and make you jump to those 10% of questions that need think over, with crazy associations of diseases
Qbooks (early in beginning will show you how American curriculum in med school look like, in term of questions esp for this crazy exam )

Highly recommended combination:
FA + USMLERx + DIT + UW = more than enough. especially those first 3 (FA + USMLERx + DIT)

aim score : 250+
dream residency : Psychiatry

ANY QUESTION, YAR WELCOME .

was easy to follow and retain pathoma materaial rather than Goljan ( dasnt mean is bad book , NO ..., problem is only that book ddnt fit me i can say ) . i think pathoma is very good for averaged student who are struggling with step 1 pathology . u will reatin up to 90 % of the book . read dry first , second time wth video , third time dry again . was enough

after my first reading of all review books and 2 times FA read , then i did USMLERx , then took NBME 6 . come to how predictive they are , i think dont do ths game wth USMLERx or even those UWSA . better buy NBME form online and see yarself , and all about predictive or not predictive will be evaluated there . by the way i dd USMLERx Mock test (7th block ) , bt sorry cant remember exactly score , bt was around 205 - 215 if not mistaken .

my FA was 2011 version together with DIT 2011 . i ddnt note such trouble of using these versions for my 2013 exam . things are not such different i can say , little changes only which are not such significant . But better match yar FA version with DIT version , so that to follow pages well when they mention .
start Qbank esp USMLERx early early if money isnt big prob , immediatley after First reading of yar review books (either KLN or any combination ) and 1st reading FA .
so that when u do Qbnak (eg. usmlerx ) will help u go through FA again second time in question style . then after that go for NBME ..., see yarself , at this time solve yar weakness by reading again yar review book (just fast ) and FA seriously on those problematic subjects . then start UW ...do it once . read yar note from UW and FA together again . then go for NBME again . see yarself again , where still weak . and then if micro , behaviour , may be some anatomy question , physiology ( will recommend u go for Kaplan Qbank and do these questions in subject wise afst as u can ) take info from there write in yar FA ..and then read again FA . go for another NBME . then keep repat UW second time . but dont forget DIT please (if u can , do it secfond time ) . am sure u will see changes .

people used to cram that USMLERx isnt good Qbank , but believe me , these guys doesnt have such three steps thinking question as in UW ...but worthy doing my friend , u will grab those commonly tested facts that u need to have in yar brain before start jump think higher . e.g USMLERx will tell you Jesus is Mesiah , UW will jump more step and tell u why Jesus is Mesiah and why is called Mesiah . but wat i wana tell u is u will never know why is Mesiah if u dont know first even he is called Mesiah . am trying give u simple example in such way . so do it . FA + USMLERx + DIT = is yar 85 % exam

according to my experience , Conrad fischer pharm cards + FA + Kaplan Video (ANS drug section ) = was more than enough for me to answer questions .
about lange pharm cards , real sorry i dont knw , ddnt try them . but was using lange biochem cards , and they were great .
How to study ? know MOA , side effects (especialy special side effects peculiar to drugs or group of some drugs ) dont memorise nausea , vomiting ..those kind of general effects and non specific . know clinical use . and thats it . questions was very easy in my exam . straight forward . pharm is difficult in medical school i guess , but not for step 1 usmle . good luck . know basic , u will be safe .

if u are on the early preparation , then doing BRS question at end of chapter wont be bad idea at all ., but real they are easy or more open can say . physio was my prob after done wth BRS and UW ..., was scoring low in UW . decided do Physio questions from kaplan Qbank , and i was almost there where i wanted to be in physio for step 1 . (if money isnt a case , try physio qn in kaplan , they are well written with some graphs and crazy charts which mimic exam almost ) .
DIT as officialy programmed , take 15 days . but i finished it in 10 days . so it depends how much time u gona spend watch these guys per day . bt guess 10 days is OK for ana average student . gd luck

real ddnt find book or Qbank enough for anatomy from my all resources i used for anatomy , i wasnt stable on that . but in exam was able answer most of question without problem and screwed up with some of them . exam differ , mine was with almost 3 anatomy questions in each block . but may be will be less wth yars . dont knw realy .
UW = underestimate anatomy
Kaplan = exagerate anatomy
HY gross + FA = pretty basic .
thats my experience.
abt micro . do FA micro + UW + Kaplan qbank micro section (not necessary , but do if money isnt issue ) = peaceful of mind guaranteed in exam day for micro qns .

My opinion is , tha book is nice and useful only if you are at early preparation or mid prepn before even start yar UW ..,. about me , yeah was useful . the book is all about basic stuffs and was helpful . recomended for average student in early prepn . but for last prepn , listen to pathoma will be ok (because Dr Sattar covers pathophysiology with decent explanation very well too in his videos )

Do you think Pathoma is suffiecient for Pathology. I have read Goljan once and it takes a lot of time. For which areas do you think FA is enough?

exam differ and experience differ , but according to my exam i found FA was enough for microbiology , immunology , pharmacology , psychiatry . and 90 % biochemsitry . even biostat too , ..

sorry mutant , didnt answer your question concerng pathoma in my prev post (( well , pathoma isnt sufficient 100% , but almost 90 % questions covered , and if do UW ..then you will be safe . Goljan is for super student i guess and not such student friendsly book for averge students ., thats my opinion . i had hard time wth goljan too , i came here in ths forum and adress my problem , and one member i guess was someonbe HOPE2 PASS by name here , suggest me to do pathoma , i ddnt knw it before , but once i started , i felt oooh yeah , am going now . Dr Sattar knows how diff is thst stuff and he make thngs very easy . try it and believe that you are safe . stop switch from goljan to pathoma , pathoma to goljana gaian . just stick wth pathoma and UW questions . nothing new in exam in such way , just intergrate yar inofrmation and knowledge u get from these sources . thats all .
