Liver Please share your Liver facts..

I came to realize the importance of Liver in our bodies like never before. It's like the mother of body organs.. feeding them in the hour of need even while compromising it's own needs Biochemistry was an eye opener for sure !!!!

There are a lot of facts dispersed about Liver here and there and initially I'd thought to just limit this post to glorify the might of liver in the biochemistry world but since we all are at different places in prep but we are bound to encounter Liver everywhere. So it's better to "Did you know" about the Liver in the USMLE Step 1 perspective to clarify some important concepts.. Idk, I guess I sound crazy... for Liver

Now on I forbid all of you from depleting your NADs by drinking, putting your metabolism in reverse gear and beware of mushrooms and acetaminophen!

did you know, that without a solid understanding of liver histo, it becomes a little difficult to appreciate the mechanism by which cirrhosis actually happens?

will elaborate more on this later when i get to liver path.

also, did you know that the ito cells (stellate cells) store vitamin A in lipid droplets as retinol ester?

Did you know Urea production goes down in Liver failure? The poor liver has no where to put the NH3 so it gets shoved into glutamate to form too much glutamine!

These are my liver facts: I drank too much throughout college and med school whereby my liver is probably pickled by now.
