Cool Unbelievable 268!!

Hello friends,

I recently got my score and it turned out to be really good. So here I am writing a concise experience of mine. Am not that good with words so please ask if you have any specific queries.

Main Books: Kaplan Lecture Notes, BRS Physiology, Goljan Pathology.
Although I did refer to standard textbooks like Grey's Anatomy, Ganongs Physiology, Harper's Biochemistry, Robbin's pathology etc every now and then during my first read, its useful only for understanding some facts.

Review book: First aid of course

Qbanks: UW primarily. Also used Kaplan, Rapid review etc. but just when I was done with UW.

I took nearly 11 months of time to prepare but I had my internship going on and its really hectic here in India. So effectively it was about 5-6 months of study I presume.

My NBME score was 233 on form 13 after my first read and 245 on form 7 after second read. Didn't take any NBME thereafter as I was too scared of getting low scores and getting underconfident

UWSA form 1 was 263 and form 2 was 265. That is still better than NBME as they atleast tell you the explanations!!

Any further queries can be asked here and I will be more than happy to respond. Its my turn now!!

I studied Kaplan+FA+a bit of stuff here n there on forums and old papers+explanations from UW

Correct percentage was 79%

Recommend Goljan for pathology. Atleast two reads!

Nothing as such particularly. I was exhausted from my UWorld so I decided to do it. Its not as good as UW!! Do just 20-30 random blocks if you must!

Congratulations on a terrific score.

Couple questions: How many first aid reads?, what did you annotate first aid with, and should i do kaplan q bank first or uworld? What are your thoughts about pathoma? Did you use Goljan audio??

Welcome to the forum man. Congrats on ur score. Knowing ur score is good but not so helpful unless u share ur preparation and exams experience..

I read first aid 3 times. Annotated it with UW explanations. Used only Goljans book for path. Audios r futile!

Last two weeks is the most crucial time for your preparation. In last 6 weeks I was mainly revising UW, taking self assessments from NBME and UW, and reading first aid. Don't start with a new series like deja vu,rapid review or high yield unless you have done it earlier. I started doing rapid review and then found it to be totally time waste. So just focus on UW+First Aid+keep taking self assessments!

Can't say that for sure as I had my internship going on and every day isn't the same. But I think studying 6-8 hours per day for 5-6 months should be enough. I began with Kaplan lec notes.

guys i am not really good with writing experiences and stuff but i will try my best,
first of all let me start by saying that if you really prepare well u can ace this test, yes even a 280 is possible as i know i got some really easy questions wrong may be 3 to 4...
i will try to anticipate and answer most questions people might have..
as far as study materials and books are concerned i want to reiterate what diagnostic said in his/her post... standard combo of kaplan notes,u world and goljan for pathology..though i did not read much from fist aid for step 1 as i felt that most info in that book is redundant with what is given in kaplan and gojlan put together just more concise which i personally did not like, but if u like reading from concise books go for it.
i personally feel that its not so much which resources you use but whether you can understand absorb and apply the information that you read when a question comes up on the screen on the big day as i have seen that people using the same materials score between 200 and 270.

i felt that about 10 to 15% of questions were based on plain memorization the rest were about interpreting labs and extracting key info from the stem of the question then choosing the best answer from the given options, the correct answer is there you just have to recognize it.

as far as time is concerned i will say that if you can slog for 9 to 10 hrs each day you can ace this test in 4 to 5 months provided you have some decent background knowledge of medicine.

finally a word on nbme...i felt they were really useful and gives you an idea about how questions are asked on the real exam, and they do predict your score correctly,i got 268 on both form 13 and form 15..

finally guys just do what works for you...
