I am also in your company. Finding tough. Have fulltime job, kids and family to support above all am very old img or you can say ancient img. cant spare more than 5-6 hours till now. And also finding tough to recall things after such a long time as it is not easy to remember things. But it is sheer resolve to do the steps and also a challenge to overcome that is driving me. I am prepping for december at the earliest hope we all will conquer the beast. Good luck to all fellows.

dude i am too behind. i have started my serious studying since june 1st.
i have wasted a lot of golden time i had just because of exact this issue, but in different circumstance, COPING!
everyone has his own life problems but in my case the KEY of all problem i have is getting into residency program ASAP, if not ...
maybe thats my motivation, but dont think about the fatigue Doctor. i have read most of your posts and i feel you have studied hard and you made a good base, now just keep it up to get to your goal and what you deserve.
just dont let anything make you stop, i am pretty sure you would ace the test with a very good score

Default Let us stay focused

Wow so nice to see that I would not sink in the boat. You guys are great we are not alone let's keep the fire burning. My life has been on and off. I think the key to this exams is to stay focused every day. Remember the following points.
1. Let us at least open those books everyday.
2. Also let us get minimum and maximum study hours per day so that If nothing at all we can achieve the minimum ours per day.
3. In addition, Let us study the material and understand them well keeping note of where important info are hiding so we could trace them quickly.
I have done 4 months reading and yet have only done anatomy, biochem, physio now on microb. I studied them well but I can't remember anything from the earlier books but I know if I take it again I would remember them very well in short period. Thorough some days off from books about 2 wks becos of family responsibilities which are important. Am married too.

the past is past. dont think about it, make a plan right now and stick to it. we all forget this subjects 2 days later, but it comes to your mind when you reach the case. but this time dont let anything disrupt your plan, whatever the reason is, its not the reason! it is an excuse that we all make for ourselves. good luck with your study

Hi! well...my study schedule is a little messy
From January to May 20th: 3 hrs/day. I read FA twice and did 60% UW (unused w only 50% correct...). But i was always very tired and not learning much. Sadly I think I could have spent that time baking cakes and I would know the same...
So I decided to take time off work and try to make it for early july (my kid's school was ending and so my quiet time...). I then studied 20 full days 8-10 hours/day reviewing FA one time the all thing and 2 times my weaker points (micro, biochem, immuno). Then I did NBME 11 and got a 177, then decided to postpone my test for the fall when my kid will be in school and i can have more time off (2-3 weeks I hope). The score I got is not good, but those days were precious because they helped me to get more focused. Also, my preparation improved a lot because for the first time I tried repeat and write down concepts. So now I plan to finish reviewing those part of FA I only covered once in June and start reviewing a chapter in 3-4 days till the end of sept, then big revision in October when I hope to take time off.
I work 8am-1pm and I have to study 2pm to 6pm 5 days a week. I also have 7 night shift/month so dont count the day after....

I also have the kaplan books, which are not my primary source but i look there stuff that are not clear in FA and it helps a lot.

I also need to say that I dont care about the score, I just want to pass!

good luck to everybody!

Smile Same here

I´m working every day 8-16:30 and i have also 4-6 24-hour shifts in a month, sometimes in the weekends. After the shifts I don´t have a day to rest, i have to work on the next day.
It is really hard to find time and motivation after the long working day. It´s really nice to see that there are other people facing the same problems. I found this idea very good:

Quote:
1. Let us at least open those books everyday.
2. Also let us get minimum and maximum study hours per day so that If nothing at all we can achieve the minimum ours per day.
3. In addition, Let us study the material and understand them well keeping note of where important info are hiding so we could trace them quickly.
I will give a chance, wish you good luck and pls don´t stop sharing your experience!

Thanks guys for this thread and all your posts.
I work full time as well and it's been very difficulty combining it with step 1 preparation. I study 4-6hours/day on weekdays.

Am currently reading FA and hope to complete my 1st read by the end of July. I also do UW (tutor mode) based review of the subjects I have just finished reading.

Good Luck!!!

You are not making any frustated post. Mood swings happens to us all.
For me and to everyone on forum as well. As far as I am concerned my form 186 got rejected because med school put seal outside the designated area so I had to send it again two days back. Now will have to wait for another month and dont know they will have some other issue this time ? but this is part of the game. But since we have now decided to sit in the steps have to move forward come what may.

Making 5 hrs a day from full time working is great respect. I would say go through the needed material and still target maximum of November. If when time is approaching u think u are still not doing well then postponed. Don't get into the habit of postponing else u would never be ready.

Dr. Albert hmmm it's becoming very stressful. This month my work scheduled has been very tight. Doing average of 12hrs work daily. I had a my son, baby boy delivered 4 days ago. So sort of in some celebration mood. But a bit worried becos have a lot to do and seem to be behind schedule.
We have to make conscious effort to study daily no matter the amount of time we get. I think this is the key; consistency.
What have you done so far?

Hi everybody! hope you guys are all good. I survived a crazy month...I had 4 guests in the house + one of my co-workers had a problem so I had to work half of his time... Result: zero hours of USMLE-prep for the last 40 days
Re-starting right now, hope w a more human working schedule... it feels so hard now...

We have to make conscious effort to study daily no matter the amount of time we get. I think this is the key; consistency.
What have you done so far?
Congratulations on arrival of a new member in your family!! Work is killing us all but we will survive to win. As usual FA and questions. I have almost finished systemic path so started with Robbins review. then I plan to do uw path while keep revising FA. Lets see where I land?

Not a requirement for applications but has some wait for u in securing some slots I think. A snr told me it's helpful to get some spots becos programs think u would not have to be given some days off to write that exams.

Dr. Albert about the H1B thing, step 3 is a must. But more importantly we think of getting the programme first then we look at which visa options they have. So for now let's hit the steps then get the programme then later type of visa.

Of course if ur bent on HIB then u have to strategise to get step 3 done within the time limits before the match. Even this should u match into a program that does not sponsor HIB then still u won't get that visa.

My friend, the reason I mentioned Step 3 is Im trying to get done with USMLE before starting residency, its not a requirement, no! Unless, you need visa.Im GC holder and work here in US.If youre too,you can take it during your PGY-1,but do you want put it on hold?Well, its up to you.I will do my best just to get over it , my job conditions now are easier(i got now ultrasound job, yay!, used to do EEGs, still do some), so I can study more at work, used to do it while preping for other steps, it was so hard! I mean HARD! Then after work, just a few hours, then mostly weekends..... well, you all guys know what Im talking about

Usmle: recently did more work than while i was working, although i am more lethargic and easily bored... hard to keep focussed for 10 hrs with the books.

I have been working constantly as doctor in a busy hospital and still
I took both step 1(228) and step 2 ck(241) exams.

The key is not to give up and be persistent. No gaps in study.

So guys, keep going. You can do it.

Any tips?

Let's keep each other motivated!

The trick is consistency and fast reading but with understanding to be able to finish in shortest possible time else u would forget what u started with.

do you recommend any specific order to study the different subjects? I really do not have much time to study next to work (just started and still trying to figure it out...)

wish I could take time off, but working is my only source of income, so I guess I will have to keep doing that and try to study on the side (which has been going reaaalllyy slow...)

Thumbs Down slow pace

Glad to see all of you here. Im working as well but its an internship not even paid. I regret joining it now. Have 6 more months to go. Graduated last year but the studying pace is really slow. 4 to 5 hours max excluding oncalls and other busy days. I feel like I've forgotten what I studied way in the beginning already...

Just start with your least fav and harder subject this way you spend greater amount of time to ponder things over and understand the concept really well

Yes. I have 23 days left. Man I never thought it was that close. I was thinking a month but the feb 28 days trick fooled me.
I cannot have any explanation not to return to work. Infact I have 2 weeks to return to work and then ask for 3 days off to write the exams.
Still on uworld first round. I need a miracle man.
How far are u now?

hi friends..i know its hard to work and study for usmle at same time...i am going through it but i got somewhat lucky and i got a job at assisted living center and i work night shifts so if someone residing in usa and studying for usmle and at the same time requires to work too so that might be a good idea as i work night shifts i m able to extract 5-6 hours of study....

Yea it's not easy cramming uworld in few days/weeks. But am on it I can't afford any more days from work so I've got to go by my date. I would take nbme after uworld if it says otherwise then I may look at my date again. So what's ur new date?

No, still doing first round uworld With good notes taken for reading which can cover up for 2nd round I think. No time for multiple read of uworld. Work is pulling us.
Ofcourse If U have time do some other qbank. but I will try and do only my weak area in either Kaplan qbank or rx as and wen time will allow.
But don't forget it's all about what ur nbme tells u.
