You're better off there!

DOnt believe everything you see in these forums, i just wanted to give a word of caution to people who get good scores, but still feel depressed seeing such troll scores.
actually it is true, did not expect it, my nbme predictions were around 260-265 but if you dont like it i might as well delete it. i will post sometime in the future my prep plan, that could be of some use to other people.. i have been a silent observer of this forum for a long time and I too didnt believe such scores until today. anyway anything over 265+ purely depends on luck, so i must admit I had some luck on my side...

well I really have no experience but I have seen similar posts before and everyone was saying is 230 + in both steps is great , study hard and dont over-think about what would happen if you got 230+ again in step 2 , just do your best , thinking and imagining about ur step 2 scores will not help u

It's a polite way of telling him he is lying. People, we are not here for jokes. At least if he had been around with good reputation then we would take it with a pinch of salt. 275 is even difficult for the examiners!
Don't believe everything poeple post here. ESP poeple with low reputation.

ok i will not try to persuade anyone. i am just saying it is real, but if you dont want to believe me, i have nothing against it. i will post my preparation program sometime in the next week and if you still believe my story is fake, you can just not read it. why would i lie? would that make me feel better? oh boy i have better things to do than writing fake stories in this forum.. anyway i was always too bored to post things (not proud of that), or never had something interesting to post, but kept following the news in this forum for the last 9 months so that at some point i could post my complete experience..

lol you wont let this go without a fight, wont you?

ok usually when ppl come up with scores like this in forums, the cynics in the forum like me ask the new guy to post a screenshot of the scorecard with the id blurred.

WOuld you be willing to do that now? would you?

hahahaha i am sure someone will say that my screenshot is also fake. look i can do that, but i won't get any joy from convincing other people. as i said, what matters is not the score (that's something that has value only for me) but things I may have done during my preparation that may be helpful to future test-takers. but if you insist, i will upload a screenshot, just to make you people take my future posts seriously..

I'm applying for IM residency and I am now prepping for ck.. I feel disappointed somehow. I gave my blood sweat and tears into this exam~!
Hey of what i know.. 234 is considered a pretty good score for any speciality.. And is in my opinion a very good/competitive score if you're interested in doing ur residency in IM..
You've got a great score inspite of missing out on a couple of ques.. All the more reason to gear up for ck.. See you in the step 2 forum

just a question popped up to my mind
if the mean of the scores is 227 and the SD=22
then a score of 250 puts you on what percentile ?
( I know nothing about biostat so this might be a silly question )

How often are the mean scores revised? I wrote my step 1 in January this year and the mean then was 224, and 6 months later 227! A 3 point jump in mean score is quite significant don't you think?

That means there are definitely more number of people scoring about the 240-250 mark than previously. I don't mean to worry people, but stats don't lie

hmm... ok this was very well covered in the step 1 biostats portion.. so i find it quite weird that so many of you are so off the ball park on this one.

227 is the mean ... 22 is the sd ... so first we make the assumption that it is a normal distribution!
227+22 = 249 ... so 249 is 1 sd above mean.
now you simply apply the 68.2, 95.5 and 99.7 rule
68.2 contains -1sd to +1sd
95.5 contains -2sd to +2sd
99.7 contains -3sd to +3sd

so 249 = 0.1+2.1+13.6+34.1+34.1 or simply 50 + 34.1 (which is half of 68.2) = 84
84th percentile!

I am still in the beginning of my prep so didnt read biostat yet
so there are about 15 percent of people who are getting above 250
lets assume that half of these are AMG so about 7 % of IMG get above 250 ... thats realistic

i wouldn't say half of them are IMGs... more like 3-4% IMGs... the mean for IMGs is known to be around late 210 early 220s

ya I also forgot about that
looks like someone said before, it is reporting bias , only ones who gets 240 + comes and says his result, thats why it appears that everyone is getting 240+ but actually it is not the fact, so the ones that got in 230's and are worried , keep calm , only 3-4 % of IMG gets 250+ , getting 238 for eg you will be on 75 percentile approximately , so u are higher than 25 % of people, and lets say 12.5 % are AMG , so u r higher than 87.5 % of IMG .. u r in good shape so stay calm

exactly, most who failed or scored less won't post here, check usmleforum.com instead, you have a better idea of the scores most img seem to be having (around 210-220), 240+ is still gold for IMG.

you can only use this if the data distribution is Gaussian. That doesn't apply to USMLE scores. So, I believe there is actually no way to calculate the percentile.

Isn't the USMLE scores in a gaussian curve? From my limited knowledge, i don't see a reason why USMLE scores shouldn't follow a normal gaussian distribution. Average scores clumped up in the middle while scores on either extreme few and far in between.

Again, from my amateur understanding of the concept. If someone knows better, i'd love to know!

I believe it's not. I've read somewhere else about this, but I forget where . You can try researching about "USMLE scores distribution".

My advice- don't do kaplan path. Do Goljan RR with the audio lectures. Or atleast do BRS path. Kaplan path is a waste of time.

How did you guys find the exam compared to UWorld and the NBME exams, in terms of difficulty? I have a high UW average but my highest nbme was nbme 11 with a 230, and lowest nbme was nbme 15 with a 220. all others were in the middle.

If you plan on doing Goljan RR, i'd say do it after you finish physio, anat, biochem, pharm and micro because RR is a lot like a summary book for most of the stuff you'll need for step 1, so it'd help as a revision too. (it worked for me that way).

Otherwise, the order doesn't really matter too much.

Hahaha i guess taking 10 mins to post his results including a printscreen was too much to ask. Damn! We should have asked the genie better widhes rather than asking him(indirectly) to prove that he indeed scored 270+

im sorry if i sound like a maniac.
thanks a lot! just to let you know about the score breakdown here is what is written on the score sheet: ''The band width for a given content area is the same for all examinees''. That means that narrower bands correlate with a greater precision of the measurement of your performance in a particular subject. For example the bar for Nutrition is relatively wider than the one for Pathology, because I had only a few nutrition but countless pathology questions in my exam. THAT ALSO COUNTS FOR THE NBMES, i guess..
Other than that, I had asterisks in all subjects, but the length of the bands must have been the same for all recent step-takers!

no i am still a student, just finished the 4th year of a 6-year course in a european medical school. i am also a european citizen.

i did uworld twice. once during the first stage of my preparation (subjectwise) and i also took notes into FA. The second time was 1 month before my exam, when i decided to redo the whole qbank doing 3-4blocks per day.. as i said i will be writing a more detailed review next week (because i also did kaplanqbank and usmlerx)
