Info A little help for Step 1 please! :)

Hello everybody,

First off, I just want to say that I discovered this forum by mistake, while I was searching for the best tips & tricks for my Step 1 exam. This is my first post on the forums so I hope I get it right.

I'm an IMG from Romania, waiting to start my 5th (out of 6) year of University in autumn. I'm planning on taking the USMLE Step 1 exam sometimes next year probably, depending on what you guys suggest about my following questions.

I have the 7 Kaplan Medical blue books (I believe they're from 2012): Anatomy, Behavioral Sciences, Biochemistry & Medical Genetics, Immunology & Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Physiology. Along with these 7 books I also have the video lectures for each. Also, I have the 2013 First Aid book.

My first question is, will these books & videos suffice? If not, what else should I be looking for? I've been reading the forums and saw something about "UW" and "NBME", however, I don't really know what these mean. Any advice?

Secondly, I'm in my summer vacation now, till the end of September, and I was thinking about starting my read on the Kaplan books. Will I have enough time to finish them at least once before my vacation ends? Also, can someone recommend a good study schedule? (like how to structure the learning material for each day, what should I get - notebooks, papers, etc)?

Thirdly, I read on the forums that there is a sort of internship/observership that would boost the chances of getting into a residency program. What are these? Where can I read more about these and how can I apply?

And as a final question, what are the costs of the exam, and where is it taken? I know that the fact that I live in Romania doesn't help much, because there's no examination center in my country. + I've been searching the internet and I find all sorts of prices for the exam.

Best regards,

There are threads for the best book for each topic, and kaplan books and videos is a good start.

Recommended Books to read + kaplan( except for patho and micro(read inmuno))

For Anatomy > HY Neuro

Pathology > Pathoma AND Goljan(read physio before Goljan because he combines Physiopatho)

Microbiology > MMRS( Micro made ridic. simple) Good, Fun book helps you retain stuff with jokes and pics.

Physiology > BRS Physio by Linda Costanzo, 200pg physio book for review can read in 1 or 2 days after kaplan, really good book to keep for life lol.

NBME > National Boards Medical examination
UW > Usmle World

Both are qbanks to search weakness and review after you study at least twice each subject and do First Aid.

You wont finish Kaplan in 2 months, videos alone take like that lol.

Exams cost around 3000$ avg all in total, doesnt include travel costs etc..

Good luck
