Unhappy Feel disappointed at myself.

My exam is on Monday. I have been preparing for this exam for almost a year. i finished classes july 31st 2012. i was supposed to finish the step 1 exam by December 2012, latest. I'm the only person left in my class that hasn't taken the exam. i applied for 2 extensions through ECFMG costing $1,560.

My lazi attitude and care-free attitude put me in this position. All my classmates are starting their 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th core rotation, and I won't be starting mine till September 1st. Why did I do this to myself?

I wonder what I did this past year. My practice scores are average at best. Highest a 230 (11) and lowest a 220 (15). Now, I want to finish this exam Monday, and start planning properly so I can meet the match with the rest of my class.

Wish i could reverse time, and had read first aid through my school year.

By two extensions do u mean that u cancelled the first one and applied again? Bcz as far as I know u can only extend ur eligibility period once. isnt that so?

Correct, you can extend your eligibility once per eligibility period. I extended my first one, and that expired. I had to pay $65 for that. I got my 2nd eligibility period, and had that extended as well and paid $65 again for that.

Yes, that's what he/she means. If you calculate the cost, you will get to this approximate amount

Does it really matter? It has nothing to do with the context of the thread.

I know this does not answer your thread either, but are where do you go to school? I am assuming in the US, since you have to wait for your Step 1 to do rotations?

how high are you trying to achive? to break 240? because with scores like that, you are definitely ready it seems. i'd take a 220 in a heart beat!!!! (assuming the predictions are accurate of course)

good luck!

"It doesnt matter how slow you are going as long as you are making progress"

At the end, if u end up with a high score, no one will ask u how much u paid or how many times u extended. Godspeed & goodluck !!

i agree with this. 225 is a good score, unless you're trying to get into sometheing more competitive. considering the time factor for you, i would go ahead and take the it!

Thanks, yeah I'm going through FA right now. Was supposed to wake up at 5:30am this morning so I could read FA from 6:00am to 6:00pm; but started to study now at 10:30am. After that going to watch a few chapters of Pathoma and some Kaplan videos, and stop studying at midnight. Repeat for the next 6 days.

A 240+ would be ideal, just to be a competitive applicant and not having to worry in the future for the match. However, at 220, it's still very close to the border of a 188, it's only a difference of 32 points. How many extra questions would I have to get wrong, and end up failing the exam? Not something I want.

Not sure, but if you have taken NBME 11, 12, 13, and 15 - honestly 11, 12, and 13 are pretty easy. You can easily break a 230 on these three exams, because the material tested is extremely straight forward first order style questions, with only a few difficult questions. I didn't get a 230, mainly because of silly mistakes.

Also, the problem with 11, 12, and 13 is that a few of the questions from 11 repeat in 12, and a few of the questions in 13 repeat from 12.

NBME 15, is just extremely tough overall. Vignette will be giving info about one thing, and then question will be something completely different. Was really disappointed by getting a 220. Just worried because 15 is the best predictor to the real exam at the moment.

Friend got a 225 on NBME 15, and got a 229 on her real exam.

listen dude stop thinking about what u did and what u could have done! I did all the things mentioned above and then i totally gave up. After almost 4months of not studying anything, almost 6months after i last read the kaplans and goljan, my frnds pulled me from that state and I realized a lot of things but I will cut my story short. I did uworld for just a week, gave my uwsa right after that and than gave my exam 10 days later. I got 260 in my uwsa1, 242 in the real deal and now doing my ck. I can do it so can you and everyone here!

Stop worrying about things you can not change just focus on what is ahead. Trust me, just the way u think can do wonders. I can go on and on but i will just tell you this, I have helped a lot of people since my paper and trust me when i tell u this, people in worse shape than you have ended up with great results you just have to believe in yourself. Let go of all the negativity, stop doubting your self and stop being hopeless and you will see improvements in your results.
I will give you one last example. I had two friends whom i guided throughout their prep. Both did everything they could but they got low uwsa(230s) and low nbme scores(216 and 218) 20 days before their exam dates. These guys knew everything but they screwed up while doing questions because of a lack of self confidence and negativity. I tried my best to make them realize this but one of them just gave up and wont listen to me while the other one did. In exactly 20 days this guy made a huge jump and ended with a pretty decent score while the other one ended up with the same score as the nbme predicted. The only difference between the two was in their attitudes on that exam day! Just trust you instincts and take things lightly! best of luck for your exam!

DUDE!!! why did u leave ur buks after that uwsa score???????? who said it was a poor score?? I know people say that the UWSA overpredicts by 20 it is all over this forum but in my opinion, it is totally a myth! trust me if you mess things up in your paper big time then you are bound to get a score that would be 20 less than the uwsa score. If you keep your cool on the exam day and do the blocks like you are doing the uworld blocks at home then you can a score pretty close to your uwsa scores or even higher!

I know this is contrary to what we hear on this forum but my experiences are totally opposite. Almost all my frnds had their final scores within the range of -7 to -10 of the uwsa1 score and some even got higher scores than their uwsa. I will just tell you abt my frnds who got the exact uwsa1 score as you i.e 236. One of them got 218, another one got 233 and one of my best frnds got 256 on the real deal after getting 236 on uwsa1!!!

You will see tons of examples of people getting pretty decent scores after low uwsa scores or even low nbme scores! Just look at those people who ended up with good scores and try to ignore those examples who messed up or got low scores! Being positive and optimistic can be your strongest weapon and can help you do wonders! I would advise you to get out of your hopelessness and self pity and be a man!(if you are a guy) just set your target score( aim big), set your target date (dont delay it), set aside all the negative thoughts which are pulling you back and study your ass off until you are satisfied that you have done your best and then give your paper! Everyone is doing it and so can you!

How does it matter what others feel about you?
People who matters will still be the same whatever your score might be and others don't matter since your score doesn't define you.

How does it matter what you did on the past?
Time is not going to come back. What is past can stay in past. Don't let it ruin your future.

How does it matter how much $$$ you have spent?
You will get all that back in no time once you start your residency.

You have to get your priorities right.
What matters is YOU !
So ignore everything else and decide what is best for you.
If you feel you are not ready then postpone again BUT make sure that you learn from this experience. All you have to lose is some money. We all make mistakes but learning from them is what makes us better & stronger.
Set a goal and promise yourself that you will do your best.
Even now based on your NBMEs you can still get your desired score of 240. All you have to do is believe in yourself.

Default im not the only one.....

read the posts here and came to know ...im not the only one....im preparing for step one....and i give up every now and then ....and whats more embarrassing is its just the start of it,,,,like i started reading kaplan LN a month and half ago and just finished anatomy...with all the breaks and stuff...
and i plan to take exam somewhere around feb; march......

i believe in myself but the thought of long journey scares me...with all the responsibilities ...although they are not hurdle ...i can study for solid six hrs when my hubby goes to work...but i hardly do it for three hours...
and then i have to take weekends off....so that i dont let my hubby get bored with my hopeless studies:P

but after reading all the above posts ... i feel i can do it without pressures.....

ONE THING I WANT TO KNOW.....IF I STUDY TILL DECEMBER AND THEN I LAN TO GO MEET MY PARENTS AND FAMILY BACK HOME FOR ABOUT SIX WEEKS...WOULD THAT CAUSE A BREAK IN TEMPO.....SHOULD I DELAY THE PLAN AND TAKE EXAM FIRST THEN GO ... OR IT WOULD B OK IF A GAP OF SIX WEEKS COME IN BETWEEN AND THEN I START AGAIN ...?
