Default My step 1 experience: IMG- 237 in 4 months

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

I am an IMG. Began my prep just in the begining of March 2013. Here's how I covered it:

- Kaplan lec notes 1 read 7 days each, anat, phy, biochem, b science and immunology. 5 days pharm. I didn't read pathology or micro from Kaplan.

To me these LNs were very lengthy. Extremely hard to retain. Mainly to give a broad overview of what to expect.

- Kaplan physiology and B science video lectures- excellent resource for tricky concepts. Reinforces and nails ideas frequently tested into the brain. It sticks! Preferably while doing the relevant LNs

- Goljan Review of Pathology, with audio lectures Started this after Anat, phy Biochem. Its good as a revision of these subjects too. On its own, its a valuable resource with many new concepts for me at least. Took me 17 days to read cover to cover thoroughly.

- First Aid, First Aid, First Aid. (one read before starting the UW Qbank, one read during adn one after) This book has everything. Period.

The 1st read of FA took me about 15 days. Wasn't totally satisfied. Had to revisit during UW a lot and did it once later.

U world Q Bank-
Timed, random, unused blocks. IMO this is the most valuable resource. On its own its a prep resource. Supplemented with FA, it is gold. Made some notes, added to FA, some separate. These were my savior in times of distress. What one writes oneself, one retains most.

The UW Qbank took me 30 days to finish in one go. I did on av 2 blocks a day, and sometimes 3 if I was lucky. Read all explanantions, and had an enjoyable time. The interface is v similar to the one actually on the test.

I had a cumm % of 72 on UW. Near the end the saw tooth curve started going up and I felt a bit confident. Decided to take NBME 7.

I scored 226 on NBME 7. It was a depressing result for me, so I took a day off after. Then the review began. I did all the incorrect and marked Qs. on UW, reviewed NBME incorrects, and read loads of FA for the topics which came weak on the NBME assesment. It took me 10 days to review my weak areas and I felt I learnt a lot of new stuff during this time. I took NBME 11 after this. My result came out as 250. Was v glad obviously. Took UW SA 1 the follwing day and scored 253. I booked my exam 5 days later. Did some light revisions.

On test day, my biggest enemy was not time but apprehension/anxiety. Don't stress out too much. On the other hand, dont get too casual either. Maximise breaks.

I hope my experience helps someone in their quest for acing this test. Its a nerve wrecking exam- both the prep and the actual test. But its doable. Still feel could've done a lot better with a week or two. But hope this will be enough to pirsue a dream. In the end, its the satisfaction in our hearts that matters most. My best wishes to all the test takers.

Sincerely,
Jawaad

How do you guys memorize FA in 15 days? It's taken me so many months to memorize the book, and even then I only know the first half of the book inside and out.

One can't memorize it in 15 days. You 'absorb' the words, and hope a lot sticks. And you repeat it. Persevere and persist, my friend.

@s-atraqchi

Thanks.

I dont think you should compare yourself to anyone, least of all me. I was an av student at school and I had a low attention span concentrating.

The target used to be 60 pages of Kap LN each day. On a good day 65-70. Just understand the stuff well. My best wishes to you.

I'm glad it helps. It's surely possible and can be improved upon. Just the one US observership and a couple of minor publications. Good luck!

Its good to have the subscription valid till the end. you never know what you might need to review and there shouldnt be any regrets. I did two nbmes and the UWSA, all online. G'luck!

Of Course it can be done! To apply this year you still have roughly five more months to have your scores ready. Go for it. (don't know about score delays though) G'luck!

Default FA in 15 days? wow

Congratulations, that's a greeat score! Doing a first pass of FA took me a month and that's just for the system based subjects (of course I was also doing kaplan subjects at the same time.) I still have to do pharm, micro, immuno, and biochem from FA. I don't know how long it'll take but it's quite frustrating. I'm hoping it'll take a shorter time when I do 2nd and 3rd passes.
