Smile Finally .. I took the exam

I'm glad I'm finally done with Step 1. I took my exam yesterday. Surprisingly, it was a pleasant experience. The questions seemed very easy, and I finished early in all blocks, except one, which was kind of tough, but doable. I had 30 minutes left of break time when I left the center.

The exam was all pathology. Very little biochemistry and pharmacology. May be subjects that came next to pathology in frequency were anatomy (esp. neuroanatomy), immunology, and pathophysiology. Ethics questions ending in "what should you say?" were many, but they were well-worded and clear. Even choices in such questions were only 5, not 10 or more like we used to see. I had 2 heart sound questions, and no videos.

I had a duplicate question; well, not an exact duplicate, but two questions asking about the same thing, each in a different block. Unfortunately, I got them wrong. I also remember another wrong answer, but that's all what I'm sure I got wrong. There were a few weird questions, but I did my best, and I think I got them right.

I had like 2 questions from NBME 7, and may be another one that was very similar, so I'm glad I did that form.

The exam difficulty was similar to that of Kaplan Qbank and a little easier than NBME7. UW was way too twisted, so don't think the exam is going to be that difficult. Use UW as a learning resource, and Kaplan Qbank for simulation of the exam. And by the way, UWSAs were way far from reality. I don't recommend them.

So, as you see, the exam is not tough. Don't freak out about all those difficult concepts; you're not likely going to be tested on them. They seemed to test the very basics, with a few questions here & there requiring some thinking. Memorize the first aid, it helped me a lot.

Try to do a full mock exam. I did that a few days before my exam, using 7 blocks of Kaplan Qbank. I simulated the exam as much as possible, starting the exam at 9 am, and ending it at 5 pm. It helped me assess my readiness for this long exam, and I found out that I get pretty drowsy after a heavy lunch, so in the exam day, my lunch was a light one (cheese sandwich, banana, chocolate, juice), but in the morning I had a meat sandwich; it totally muted my hypothalamic lateral nucleus until 1 pm.

Finally, I wish best of luck to all fellow users.

EDIT: Because many members are asking about my prep details, remember guys that I haven't gotten my score yet, so don't take every advice I offer for granted, because it's not valid until I get my score! I'm just sharing my exam experience.

can't wait for the day i will also just do it and get it over with. it is so nice to hear that exam is more like Kaplan q bank because personally I have always liked q bank questions they seem much ore conceptual than u world.

Do enlist the topics subject wise which u feel were tested more on ur exam whenever u are done partying.

Congratulations brother!!! I am sure your results are going to be ace.

I have some questions for you -

1) how long did you do the question banks?
2) which question banks did you use?

Thanks in advance and have fun mate!

Thanks.

I don't remember much, but I can recall I had two BS gross specimens, a BS cross section, an MR angiogram, a brain sagittal section, x-rays. I guess neuroanatomy was heavily tested as you see. Know those annoying BS sections! Embryology was not much. Gross anatomy was basic. Almost no histology, I think.

Pharmacology was very basic and straightforward, as well as biochemistry.

I was really scared of behavioral science and biostatistics, but both were very easy, and there were no crazy calculations! FA formulas are more than enough.

Microbiology was almost not there! I thought immunology was more frequent. Also testing the basic concepts in FA.

I had no respiratory pathophysiology! The rest was like we know it; you know, the arrow-up-arrow-down style, or simple graphs.

That's it.

If you've done UW and most of Kaplan Qbank, I assure you that you'll find the exam really easy. Just relax, and imagine you're going to the test center to do some Kaplan Qbank blocks, nothing more!

Good luck.

Well, I spent 8 months. Full-time. My daily studying time varied. I'd say 4-6, and up to 8 when I was late on schedule.

I spent 4 months listening to Kaplan videos and looking at the notes. Then I read FA, did Kaplan Qbook, then I read FA again. Then I did UW, read FA, did Kaplan Qbank. However, I recommend you do Kaplan Qbank before UW. I did 2 UWSAs and NBME7 in the last month, each spaced by 10 days.

Anyway, don't take my advice for granted, because I haven't gotten my score yet! And remember that no single plan works for everyone.

Thanks.

- The audio questions were on par with those in Kaplan Qbank. They give you clues in the question stem, and tell you where the abnormality was heard; you can cross out many choices by this bit of info alone.
- I got one, but it was tricky. It didn't require calculation, rather, understanding how diseases are inherited, so you can guess the probability of inheritance without calculation. Anyway, it was just one question.
- Some had clues; some hadn't, requiring that you knew what the slides were.

Sorry guys, I missed your replies.

@Jerry, nsesereso: Thanks a lot!

@donofitaly: Thanks!

1) how long did you do the question banks? UW 2 months, Kaplan Qbank 1 month (finished only 70% of it; the higher-yield part).
2) which question banks did you use?
The above-mentioned ones + Kaplan Qbook in the very beginning.

So why is that? Are they much easier? Harder? Overly-estimating?

@step1an, ashishkabir: Thanks!

@mpz013: my advice is to relax. You're going to feel you'd forgotten everything! It's normal. USMLE does not test your memorization that much. Besides, you actually know your stuff, but you just feel you don't. Do a couple of question blocks every day except on the last day. Skim your notes and high-yield facts if you have some. Go over BS sections in Kaplan or in any other source, cause it seems they're common on the exam. It's gonna pass man! GL.

@zein: may be I wasn't clear when I said UWSA is far from reality. I didn't mean it was a bad predictor, simply because I didn't get my scores, but I meant the question types were overly twisted and strange, and not like the style I saw in the exam. It won't hurt if you do them though, but I think you'd be better off with any NBME form.

Great post and wonderful achievement.
Let me tell you that all of our monthly contest winners (and you are one of them last month) have aced the exam with over 95 score and you should be on your way towards that score
Best of luck to you. Go and celebrate and take some rest as you deserve it

Thanks for your compliments.

I did UW first (cumulative 64%, but I was still in the early learning process), then I finished 70% of Kaplan Qbank (cumulative 75%).

Anyway, NBME forms, according to people's opinions here, are better predictors. I got 580 in NBME 7 (I had some silly mistakes in this as well!).

First of all CONGRATS!...I was just wondering...how many questions do you need to get correct (out of the 200 questions) in order to get a 580?

I had 28 wrong answers in that form. But I think it's not just a matter of how many wrong answers you get, but how you compare to others. I personally believe that your score will rise considerably if you correctly answer questions that only a few get right.

Do you remember your scores on UWSA 1 & 2? are they near the NBME??

Yes, both UWSAs predicted 570, and NBME7 predicted 580. But I still think UWSA style is very far from the real exam.
