Help how to start preparation and schedule time for USMLE

hello everyone,
i am very new to this forum.i am 2012 graduate and an IMG.i want to take USMLE as my spouse lives in US and has applied for my green card. this is August 2013 when i am starting my prepration and i am looking for 2015 match. is it impossible? i have gone through different posts in this forum and they have been extremely helpful. but i am not sure whether my aim is realistic or not. so i am badly in need of suggestion of experienced members of this forum regarding my preparation and specific timeline of when i should take different steps and what should i do to match in 2015 match. again, i am interested in surgery- so it would be helpful if u suggest what i need to do to get this competitive speciality. thanks in advance.

Hi KSM88!! Welcome to the forum

It definitely is possible to finish all the step exams with stellar scores in 1 year. You just have to put your mind to it, study hard and long. Applying to Surgery though needs a little more than just stellar scores and a green card.

Being an IMG you will have to have some US clinical experience. Since you have already graduated electives are no longer an option. Try to get into a good externship program.

Doing an externship and studying at the same time may hamper your efforts to finish your exams in rapid succession. Its very hard but not impossible!

thanks geo82 for ur very quick and nice reply. your words make me optimistic. currently i am residing in my home country and have to wait for sometime (may be 1-1.5 yrs) to get my GC. so what i only have left to do is to prepare for step1, 2ck and cs. is it a bad idea to study step 1 and 2ck simultaneously and take step 1 in january2014, 2ck in april2014 and 2cs in july2014 and then look for some externship when i will be in US? is the schedule too compressed to get some results? i am in a puzzle how to and how fast to study. if anyone could help me in timing the exam schedule for 2015 match and with some suggestion regarding prep for a handsome score, it would be of great help.

My personal opinion is to study one step at a time. Read the posts and polls on the forum. You will get a pretty good idea on which books to use, what q-banks are good, what pre -tests to take, what the average scores are for each step etc.

How much time you will need to prepare really depends on your knowledge base, how quick you are at grasping new concepts, and how much time you can study per day.

Step 1 concepts do definitely help during step 2 exams. So, it may take a little longer to do step 1 but you preparation for step 2 will be relatively shorter. CS doesn't take more than 3 weeks to prepare for.

Timing for 2015.. hmm easiest way to put it is you need to be certified by September 2014. Do some reading on related topics online and on this forum. After that if you have more questions you can always ask!

I hope this helps and Good Luck!!
