Experiences Ayman Qasrawi Step 1 exam experience

Hello there
Today I sat for step 1 exam.
The exam was in general full of clinical vignettes, somehow similar to the style of step 2 ck exam. There were many long questions with lab results, radio, etc.

In general, the exam is most similar to the style of NBME 15 and UWSA 2. But in general nothing is very similar to its style .. it was a mix between NBME 15 and CK

About content:
Biostatistics & behavioral: in general I got stuck on almost every ethics question like I did in UW and NBME. The biostat were similar to UW style and many straight forward calculations. I think that behavioral was the most difficult part of my exam.

I got many weird WTF genetics questions !

In general, what you need for this exam is FA+UW.

High yield neuroanatomy is needed for the brain cross sections and MRIs, gross sections.

Radiology questions all contained a pathology, like the style of CK questions, not like the style of UW questions which asked to point to a structure.

Patho, anatomy, embryology, pharma, immuno, and micro: FA+UW where enough.

When I did CK I said: UW UW UW UW is your key.
In step 1 I say: FA FA FA FA FA is your key. The other thing is practicing a lot of questions through UW and NBME.

My preparation:
Kaplan videos for immunology and biochemistry
BRS pathology (waste of time!)
BRS physiology (read only cardio, respiratory, and renal)
High yield neuroanatomy (read the first 120 pages)
FA
USMLE world: finished with a 90% 1st time, mixed, timed.

Assessment:
NBME 15 - 259
NBME 13 - 257
UWSA 1 - 265
UWSA 2 - 265

Did I did well ? Actually I don't know ... I did what I can do. I will just pray for the best mark.

As I did in CK, I will share my complete preparation after I get my score whatever score I would get.

Now it is free time ... till I start for CS which left for my certification !

So you're saying you didn't read Kaplan at all and still scored that heavily. You must be having a real strong basic science background then. Congratulations on being done.

My advise is to start with first aid from the first day of your preparation, I mean when you study the cardiovascular system for example, read the phyio section with BRS concurrently and add notes from it ON THE first aid, and so on
And do FA at least 3 times

I did NBME 15 3 weeks before the exam
then UWSA 1 & 2 approximately 2 weeks before it
NBME 13 1 week prior

The last 2 weeks were only to revise FA and the notes of UW written inside it

For UWSA 2 ... sorry for the bad news but UWSA is overestimating ... do an NBME it is a MUST ... because NBME gives your true performance, and if you did not get a decent score then cancel your exam and focus on your weak areas

Honestly yes I had a strong basic background but that is not the whole answer. CK really helped me a lot. For example if I did not do CK then I would have studied a book for B. science, physio, psyche, etc.

Dear Ayman, thank you for sharing your exam prep. Wish you get a top notch score!!

What would you advise someone who sucks at microbiology and hates it but still wants a star performance. As you have mentioned FA&UW, please tell me how it would help retain so much dry info?

Same here. Am done with CK(waiting for results) . Started step 1 and have to get it done in 6-7 months. What strategy are you opting? Kindly share please. Thanks
