Unhappy Kicked my butt today

Hi friends,

I got good news this morning that I passed my CK exam. I took it on the 31st and my score came earlier than I had expected. Not a bad score either .

The reason I write is because I took step 1 today. The exam was so difficult and I marked several questions. I never failed any of the NBMEs... my last one was 2.5 weeks ago and I scored 480 on form 15. After all this time, I have kept moving it back and extending. Losing a lot just to make sure that I could take the exam when I was ready. As I sat there through all the blocks today, I realized there was nothing I could have changed about my studying. That there's no way to know everything, just to make an educated guess and hope for the best.

I began preparing about a year ago... because of all of the anxiety about the exam, I took CS and CK first and passed both with only one attempt. I took CS in February and just wrote CK a few weeks ago. My first NBME last October was barely passing. Then my scores steadily increased. my UWSAs were good, but we all know that those are unreliable, so I kept pushing my test in the hopes that my score would go higher...

Thank you for reading... just the exam today was pretty rough. I hope I passed it and have these exams done for now. I definitely felt better after my ck... today I came out of the exam with a puzzled look and matching emotions. looking for some hope. :sorry:

Hi monsterusmle,

This is a pretty common finding... The Step 1 is notoriously known to be the hardest of all the USMLE's.... I don't think I've ever come across someone who came out feeling good about it.

Your NBME's are good, so I would have confidence that you did fairly well. Most of the questions on the Step 1 are designed to force students to apply what they've studied, and are not meant to be direct questions. This is frustrating of course, but extremely common.

Enjoy the time off and rest-assured that based on your history you have probably done just fine.

Best of luck.

You studied for CK+CS+step 1 in one year? So how much time did you dedicate for step 1 only?
(Hope for you that you passed them all!)

yes. i started studying for step 1 first (for more than a year now), but cancelled the exam before due to test anxiety. i was still a student then. i couldn't force myself to take the exam so i moved on to clear cs and ck first which i did on the first attempt for both.

at the beginning of studying for ck i was focusing more on step 1 so the first 4 weeks of my ck prep was doing ck only as an adjunct subject. i couldn't make myself take step 1 first so i took ck first when i finished studying and had good nbme and uwsa score. when i finished ck i continued back to studying for step 1 for a few weeks. i had already exhausted the qbanks for uw and kaplan for step 1 so i just subscribed to uw for practice. nbme 15 before final review was 480 2.5 weeks before my exam.

risky, yes. i would jump for joy if i miraculously pulled above 220.:sorry:

Do you think ck relies mostly on step 1? because I'm planning on taking ck about 2 months after taking step 1.

i think 2 mos is adequate for ck if you have studied for step 1 (and i mean really studied and sat through the material and understood it). the focus of ck is very different. i don't remember getting a lot of step 1 qn, bt there were a few. i recall a lot of preventive qns. i think my score could hav bn higher if i took 2 more weeks to study n review the diagnosis and treatment trees throughout the mtbs.

hello skyblue,

i cleared ck and cs before step 1. i got my results the morning i was to appear for step 1. i thought that if i had failed ck that i wouldn't continue with step 1 at that time, but it turned out that i had done well so i had no choice but to take step 1 (i guess deep down i was trying to find a reason to make me not go into the exam).

my prep was more of self prep for step 1. i finished kaplan videos and text and goljan during medical school days. i am a recent graduate so that was about two years ago. during my fourth year, i read through costanzo physiology and completed the pathoma videos, but i still did not feel comfortable with the questions. as you know it is not how much you know but whether you can apply your knowledge to the questions. so i finished uw and wrote my notes into two separate notebooks by topic.

bc i couldn't force myself to sit for step 1 from the anxiety that it was causing me, i switched my focus to ck. i studied for nearly 10 weeks for ck, then i sat for step 1 three weeks after ck (hence i got my results for ck the morning of step 1). after ck prep, i took nbme 15 and had raw score of 480 and then i just used the information from there to extensively cover those weak areas from FA and my notes from uw.

i hope that this has been helpful. i know it is not the typical sequence, but i realized that i had to try to build my confidence first.
