Hi Irha,

This is always a tough situation because every single student is different. Students coming from off-shore schools (ie. Carib) are very hit-and-miss with respect to the quality of education received. I've dealt with many students who felt their medical education was sub-par, and in these cases it is often necessary to have a very detailed review of the material that is taught in medical school. If you feel as though this is you, then Kaplan is a good idea, simply because their detailed program covers pretty much all of the basic sciences; but keep in mind that this is extremely detailed, will take lots of time, and will cover plenty of information that simply is not tested on the Step 1. But, it is necessary to know the basic sciences inside and out if you hope to be a good Physician.

On the other hand, if you feel as though you have a firm grasp on the basic sciences and are looking more for a review of the higher yield info that is covered on the Step 1, Kaplan isn't likely needed. I always suggest that students use USMLE World, done in a timed fashion to re-create the stressful scenario felt on the real exam. Don't make the mistake of using UWorld as a test of your knowledge, rather use it as a tool for improving on any weaknesses you have. Use NBME exams to gauge your progress and mastery of the tested material. As for what you use to identify the high-yield info that is usually tested, any of the traditional review guides are usually enough, but realize that these are meant to be 'guides' that tell you what is tested, and are in no way detailed enough to help you do well. This is why IMG's tend to go the route of review programs, because they help identify the high-yield material and also go into greater detail in helping you master that info.

Hopefully that gives you some direction. I wish you the best of luck.
