Of course put all efforts to step 2. What specialty you have thought? Some residencies are easier to get. |

FA has a page near the beginning of the book that shows average step scores for various residencies. If you look at that you'll see that Family and OB/GYN are similar in terms of score required to match. Dont' think about the score so much. Its' much more to do with contacts and research experience. We all know of people who matched with similar scores. If you pass the step 1 you have completed the major milestone on the road to residency in the US. The score is important, but so are many many other things. I'd concentrate on those and for now.

dont worry, you should be really happy you just passed the hardest step. If it is your first attempt chill out, you still have a shot (I know people who passed step 1 on the second attempt with a minimum passing score and still matched into a program).
Look out for programs that only requires a minimum passing score (IM, FM, neurology, psychiatry). Anyway you still have 3 other tests you can ace. Just get higher scores on the next steps and try to do observerships, externships and get good LOR.

less competitive specialties include family medicine, internal medicine, preventative medicine, and psychiatry.

I think you can add Paeds and Pathology to it too.

Hi all,
I'm in a similar situation,196/80. I am about to start my clerkships (from Pakistan but went to Caribbean school). I feel awful, I really want IM---with the option of fellowship later on but feel residencies are really competitive these days and I don't stand much chance. Any advice on standing out during rotations to get good LoRs? Who gets good LoRs, students who are knowledgeable, students who put in the work, what counts more? Also, I have loads of time since I'll apply for the 2013 match and almost two years before the application process. How do I find research opportunities? BTW, someone mentioned Anesthesiology..i was under the impression that its really competitive and you need a really high score although it is open to IMGs-can someone clarify this.thanks |

You can do research while you are a medical student and that would really count high. Ask your profs at Med Schools and see what opportunities you have. Good LoRs come when you show extreme dedication which entails both high levels of knowledge as well as hard working (such as being there early in the morning and staying late and doing everything you can do) |
