Experiences IstariRadagast Step 1 Experience - 257

Hi all,

I want to narrate my Step 1 experience, hopefully it will be useful to you guys in this forum.

About me:
22 y.o 6th year medical student (here medicine lasts 7 years) in Peru

Time of Prep:
Approx 1 year (I started studying in May 2012 and took my exam July 31st, however I stopped studying from December to March because I was doing a clerkship in the US)
During all this time I was taking my regular classes at my medical school, so I didn't have any "exclusive" study time. I was Mostly 3-4 hr sessions each day, some more, some less; some days I didn't even study at all.

Materials Used:
Kaplan series Books + Videos
First Aid
First aid qbook + case studies
Kaplan Q Book
CMMRS
Goljan Path
BRS Physio

BRS Behavioral
Kaplan QBank 79% (First try)
UWorld: 78%(First Try)
(Did both q banks twice)

NBME:
6: 200
5: 240
13: 245
12: 247
15: 252 ( i know i took way too many NBME's)
UWSA1 260
UWSA2 262
Test: 257

Tips:
Starting early is a great advantage, start taking note in your first aid ASAP, specially from qbanks and NBME questions you get wrong, but also from concepts from other books. Use the mark feature in your exam to go over questions in which you have doubts makes a great difference.

Please do let me know if there is any questions about my experience.

Cheers.

Please do let me know if there is any questions about my experience.
Congratulations for your high score and thank for sharing your experience with us.
I would like to ask you some questions:
1)How exactly did you study Kaplan notes and videos? (first videos?did you read first and then write notes along with the videos? etc.)
2)Did you watch all the videos or did you skip some of them?
3)FA Case studies: Does it worth our time?
4)Which edition of Kaplan Qbook did you use?
5)Did you find useful BRS Behavioral?Cause I am thinking of using "Kaplan Medical USMLE Medical Ethics: The 100 Cases You are Most Likely to See on the Test (Kaplan USMLE) by Conrad Fischer".

Thanks in advance!

@hopefedina @dr_kg
My NBME timeline was something like:
6: 200 May 2012
5: 240 Sept 2012
13: 245 Dec 2012
12: 247 Jul 4
15: 252 Jul 28
And yes, the form 15 was, in my opinion, more close to the actual exam. Of course this just may be because I am looking at it in retrospect.

@Paroikos
1. I watched videos along with reading the text and took notes (don't forget to use x2 speed lol)
2. I skipped physio and micro, but I think that was a mistake. DO skip path though.
3. As I said I had a lot of time, so the more questions the better, if you are really short on time then maybe you can't afford it. Not exactly groundbreaking questions, but every little thing helps
4. 2011 i think and i used 2008 video but it is basically the same, so don't sweat it.
5. I used BRS because i couldn't find the Conrad Fisher book, all in all it was ok.

I forgot to say that I also did DIT, it was a good all-encompasing exercise.

If you guys have more doubts, please don't hesitate to ask!

Congrats for the nice score.
How was the DIT? Do you recommend it?
Thanks.

@mokateb
I would, but only if you get it for free. Otherwise I think is too expensive. Dont forget to use x2 speed if you do use it, though.

@aks1987
I just took notes on the margins. Didnt add any more pages, but there was barely an empty space in my FA.
I finished each Qbank in 6 weeks or so. But I did each of them twice

@pranavmerchant
Yes, I would recommend it. I has some questions that may not be tested, but so does UWorld. I wouldn't say that KaplanQbank is 100% necessary to get an 250+ score, but I would definitely use it, in addition to Uworld obv, if I had the choice again.
