Experiences kid_next_door Step 1 Experience (235)

This forum helped me a lot for CK prep so far, so I thought that I would give back by writing about my step 1 experience

7 Months prep. time
Jan - was not serious, studied only 50% of time
Feb-July - serious prep.

First 4 months -
1 reading of Kaplan Notes & Videos
1 reading of Goljan Notes & Audio Lectures

Next 2.5 months -
1 reading of Kaplan Notes & Videos (except Microbiology & Gross Anatomy)
1 reading of Goljan Notes & Audio Lectures
1 reading of First Aid with alongside Kaplan & Goljan
USMLERx for Pathology, Physiology, Pharmacology, Genetics, Behavioral sciences & Epidemiology
Uworld complete
(I created Qbank tests by combining Physiology, Pathology, Patho-Physio & Pharmacology for each system)

Last 2 weeks -
1 NBME scored 570 (238 3 digit)
1 complete reading of First Aid
1 complete revision of Uworld

Things that I did wrong
  • 2nd reading of Kaplan was a big waste of time, I should have skipped that and finished USMLERx
  • USMLERx was good, concentrated too much on First Aid.... That's both a good and bad thing....
Good because doing USMLERx is worth at least 2 readings of First Aid
Bad because doing a Qbank covering topics not in First Aid would have been more helpful
  • I would have done Kaplan Qbank rather than USMLERx
  • Golijan general path is also more or less a waste of time, a lot of those chapters are a waste like nutrition as they are covered better in Kaplan Biochemistry Notes
  • Physiology, Patho-Physio was my weakest link, Kaplan and First Aid don't it cover well.... I should have done BRS for Physiology
  • 1 or 2 more readings of First Aid, in retrospect most of the things that I remember are from First Aid not from Kaplan!
  • Do not get me wrong, Kaplan Notes are very good because most FMG's are giving exams a long time after pre-clinical years so Kaplan are essential, but 1 reading is enough even if you don't remember anything don't worry just move on to First Aid & Qbanks

3 Days before the exam
  • Horrible time because I was worried about the exam, but could not study as my brain stopped working
  • Plan minimally for a few days before the exam, 2-3 hr discussion with study partner could help
  • Actually few days of relaxation before the exam is probably the best thing to do!

Exam Day

Accessories
Plenty of Redbull
Plenty of Snickers & chocolate
Plenty of water, orange juice & ice tea
2 Chicken burgers
1 bag of Lays

Exam
  • The questions didn't seem too hard... there were very few WTF questions, but I knew that some were experimental questions so I was not too worried
  • Questions were most like NBME in difficulty but much easier than Uworld
  • I finished 5-10 min early for each block, just reviewed only marked questions
  • Most stupid thing I did was went back to review a question that I did not mark and changed it to the wrong answer just before the time expired

If anyone needs help with Step 1 prepartaion then just PM me....
I hope this was helpful......

Regarding USMLERx, do you think doing it alone would be sufficient? I have my exam in 3 weeks. I'm 40% through with USMLERx. I had planned on doing both Uworld and USMLERx, but I don't think I can do that at this pace.

So, would you recommend sticking with USMLERx; did it prepare you well enough to score a 240? Or, is Uworld a must? Thanks for any advice you may have on this.

Wow great! I was wondering how did you grab the concepts of Kaplan by reading it only once? Did you just practice it only by doing questions?

Thanks!

Congratulations!

First Aid is the best for pharmacology, there will be some questions about Autonomic nervous system with cardiac tracings.... you need to really understand the concepts to answer them so 1 reading of Kaplan Notes is enough as long as you are doing a lot of practice questions...

Mechanism of action & adverse effects are probably the most tested

I don't remember the questions, but I found them easy & my score report shows that I did very good with Pharmacology questions....

Golijan RR is a waste of time, I used it for the slides while studying Goljan Notes.... slides are good, spend 4-5 hrs a few days before the exam going through Golijan RR just looking at the slides, that will be helpful

Its going to be difficult to finish it in time for the exam & even if you do, it is hard to revise it

Yeah I think it is, I would not have given the exam without watching the videos. The only one that I would skip are: Gross Anatomy & Microbiology... (Note: Don't skip Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Cell biology & Immunology)

Think of it this way, videos are like 1 more revision of Kaplan

You can watch them in 1.5 speed or faster... use the "]" button to increase speed by .1 in VLC player, you can save time that way

Congrats on the great score!
I have my exam in three months.what would you recommend for Anatomy and Neuroanatomy? Should I stick to kaplan or do as much questions as possible, given the fleeting nature of this subject? Or any other sources?
Thanks

I don't understand your first question..... but yeah practicing questions are the most important

This is how I would rank study materials in terms of how much they help me answer questions

Uworld, USMLRx 50%
First Aid 30%
Golijan Systemic pathology notes 15%
Kaplan Notes 5%

Kaplan Neuroanatomy is the best, First Aid is also good. There is little over lap between the 2 books, FA has more high yeild stuff but Kaplan Notes has all the basics and medium to low yeild in addition to some high yeild topics....

I think you have to do both, Kaplan Neuroanatomy notes are one of the few topics that I would suggest you read 2 times....

For Gross Anatomy, you can skip Upper Limb & Lower Limb from Kaplan Notes... First Aid and Uworld cover it well.... 1 reading of Kaplan Notes for Thorax, Abdomen, Head & Neck should be enough along with FA and Uworld

I was in the same situation as you .... Uworld is a must! I just tried to finish USMLERx as much as I could.... Just finish the important topics in Rx like Pathology, Patho-physiology, Physiology and any other subjects you feel necessary

Many Rx questions are straight recall, Uworld questions simulate the real exam the best

This is Golljan Rapid Review (RR)
http://www.amazon.com/Rapid-Review-P...n+rapid+review

You can download the Golijan Notes and Audio Lectures form torrents.... do that and compare the difference

They will not ask questions about amino acid structure, but they will ask questions about specific amino acids like which amino acid def. will cause pellegra?.....

Even i struggled with doctor-patient relationship questions, try BRS behavioral Science...

Hi kid, first congrats for the score, second, by saying "Goljan slides" do you mean these slides? http://www.scribd.com/doc/38577305/Goljan-Slides
And as for the notes- I've found this link: http://www.vcomdo.com/classroom2/wp-...0-%20Audio.pdf
(I hope it's ok to bring these links here...)

Depends on which revision of FA? First revision maybe 7-10 days

Second or Third, 4 days...

Review Uworld explanations with FA, write down things that are not in FA in the margins...

If you are doing 2 blocks daily then 24 days should be enough to finish Uworld...

Someone was asking me about Pathoma. I don't have personal experience with Pathoma, but almost everyone that does has only good things to say about it.... I think that you can replace Goljans with Pathoma, but check it out and get advise from anyone that has done Pathoma...

Everyone should devise their own study plan and not just simply follow someone else... That was by far the biggest mistake that I made for my step 1 preparation...

A big congratulations and thank you for sharing your experience with us

I really need some direction.

I'm scheduled to appear for exam in about 2.5 months (can't reschedule). I have finished one round of all subjects except gross anatomy and microbiology along with FA and KQB for each subject.

Is it wise to review these 2 remaining subjects for the first time with UW and save some time? Or should I review them before going for UW? I want to finish UW, 2 reviews of FA and 3 NBMEs before writing exam. Can you please give me some rough timeline?

Thank you!

Just read Micro and Anatomy once form FA before doing Uworld.. that should be enough

Except Neuroanatomy, I would read that at least once form Kaplan Notes, especially since there is a lot of time for your exam

Also the Early Embryology Kaplan Videos helped me a lot, they are not long you can finish them in 1 hr...

everything else is a waste of time to read from Kaplan Notes..... FA is more than enough

I did not find Biochem overly hard, the questions were defiantly easier than Uworld. In my case, I did study Biochem well during my collage years, so my perspective might be different....

KLN and Videos are helpful to understand concepts, no way should anyone skip Kaplan Biochem videos in my opinion. FA is going to help you answer questions, especially when you don't have much time before the exam....

At the most there is going to to be 1 or 2 questions about specifics in metabolic cycles.... for example they are not going to ask: what is the next step after fumarate in TCA cycle? Don't worry about memorizing cycles, but it is important to understand the functions of each cycle for example: TCA cycles function is to sequentially cleave 1 carbon and release high energy molecules.

Probably the only specific question about metabolic cycles is how many ATP are produced from one molecule of glucose.

Honestly I have no idea, I don't think that anyone other than USMLE people could know the answer to that question. I have been down that path of trying to figure out how many questions I needed to get right to get a certain score.... honest advise, do not go down that path and waste your time

I hope you know that there are about 30-35 experimental questions... so that means even if you got the same number of questions wrong as me, we both will probably have a different score. A wrong answer to an experimental question will not count against your score.

Here are some reply's to questions that I have been getting.

1. I think the real exam is easier than Uworld, about the same difficulty as NBME

2. Simple study formula: 1 reading KLN + videos, Few readings of FA, Uworld.... if you still have time then add an extra Qbank

3. NBME 13 & 15 are the best, start with the most recent and go to the earlier ones... (in my opinion 13 & 15 are enough, please verify that yourself)

4. UWSA is not as good as NBME to predict your score, plus if you already did Uworld Qbank then most of the questions are repeats so your score will be inflated.
