. Well i took all the NBMEs, (got 254 on 15 and 250 on 12, the others i took long long ago, when my studying was awful). I've been going over the other ones offline (going to finish 7 tonight, ive gone through 13). I'll be seeing X-rays and CTs and what not in the coming days. How was genetics and stats on the exam?

240 plus; i'd be happy with anything in the 240s range. Do you think with my scores in those 2 NBMEs, i have a chance?

Each test is soo different you really can't base it on one or a couple people's experiences... My exam was different than both of theirs..
I had a couple of micro tops..

ya you are right, each exam is different, and i believe everyone's exam has some theme in it.. but its ok to ask u know, coz everyone reads everything anyways,.. so no one actually relies on ppl's experiences..

Oh I know... Sorry I didn't mean anything by it... Just meant to CisternaChyli that even if ur renal physio wasn't bad, doesn't mean his/hers won't... But they have done awesome on the NBMEs so I'm sure itll be fine.

Hi...
I have a small question to people who have done uworld Q bank And the self assessment tests...
Do the self assessment tests have the same questions that are already there in the qbank or are they different in anyway??
Any info about the self assessment will be helpful...
And also how to corelate it to the real score..????

Thanks for sharing the experiences.May Allah reward you all.
It seems simple to me but while doing uworld i get confused,so is it like this that the ventricular pressure loop vol curves.Point 1 =preload,EDV n stroke vol,point2=ESV,EFn Afterload,Point3=EDV

quick question on acute renal failure; FA says in post renal failure, the Serum BUN/Cr ratio is more than 15, but Pathoma says it decreases. Now who is right and why?

In postrenal-EARLY phase.BUN:cr>15 cuz more BUN will be going in blood as a result of inc pressure in tubules caused by obstruction.
In LATE phase of post renal, enough damage had been done so tubules have lost their function n they wont reabsorb of BUN so BUN:cr<15

yeah that makes sense, FA should have clarified, thanks for the explanation though . The other thing is, in Intrinsic Renal Failure, the ratio is decreased...but there is an absolute increase of BUN and Cr in the serum.

That's right becos dysfunctional tubular epithelium results in decreased urea reabsorption. So BUN decreases but creatinine increases in serum becos the necrotic cells plug the tubules causing obstruction so the net effect is that the ration <15 in intrinsic renal failure.

Hey!

Stats and behavioral were pretty heavily hit on mine. Just keep calm when you get a question... sometimes the chart is way more intimidating than it should be!

According to the website, scores are not released on Christmas, nor the following week. If this is the case, then the score should be out Jan 8.

I hope it is the case... I'm already going nuts waiting!!

thanks! Yeah i was a little nervous today . These notes i've made from UWorld are taking forever to go through . I doubt i'll have time to do a full read of Pathoma again before the exam.

I need help please!
My exam is next week. I took nbme 11 (240) and uwsa1 (247) last weekend. I though I was ok but yesterday I tried the nbme13 scoring 233
Aiming for 240+. I do not know if nbme13 is harder then the other ones. I found It ok but at the end I scored so poorly
does anyone had the same experience?
Any advice? I'm confused, I do not want to reschedule my exam. I worked hard on it to reach what i was aiming for, and this result was a bad shot.
Thank you

Default Scared....

My exam date is coming up soon (on the 17th of December) and im starting to panic lol. I did NBMEs a long time ago, and the last one I did a month ago had me a 220 (NBME 12) with only 40% of uWorld done, and I took UWSA 2 about 2 days ago and got a 247. I have saved NBME 13 and 15 for last. Im taking NBME13 on the 12th and NBME15 on the 14th. I should be finishing the final uworld questions on the 11th.

I hope they don't completely crush my hopes. I still have an eligibility extension available (this eligibility period ends on Dec 31), but I dont think that's an option due to various family issues. Pretty much, its now or never. Im scared to death and hope I dont mess this up lol. Ideally I would love 240+ but I wouldnt feel bad about a 230 :P

I knw days b4 da xam r just too annoying. I dnt think u wuld need a review of pathoma coz questions in patho would be straight forward rather have a look at molecular or genetics..rest keep an eye on nbmes also..dont panic stay calm..

yeah'll be doing molecular and genetics; probably the night before the exam so that it will be fresh in my memory. I just looked at the last block of NBME 7 tonight; it had a question about the microscopic appearance of metastatic prostate cancer...i have no idea what the picture is like..i googled it, didnt find it. Was the exam more like the free practice questions the USMLE gives out? Long stems and what not?

you are in pretty good shape from what i can tell..you got a 247 in UWSA2 . If i hadnt made dumb mistakes or if i had figured out what the questions were really hinting towards; my UWSA scores would have lined up much better with my NBME scores!!

you have a week; i think if you just brush up on some stuff, i think you can make it to 240; i really think you can . You can do a lot in a week!! You can do a lot even in a few hours or days actually!

Thanks man, it's great to hear some words of hope. Seriously, this board has helped me out so much with people giving advice and overall being very helpful. Hope I do well. Hope thos NBMEs dont completely crush me lol. And yeah, as for UWorld, sometimes I feel like their questions purposely try to trick you. I know there will be tricky questions on the real exam, but I feel like uWorld goes the extra mile to try and point u in the wrong direction lol.

Ive started this thing where I consciously tell myself to read every question slowly and its been helping out so far. Cant wait till this exam stuff is done. Hope I dont walk in and get a complete WTF-question filled block where I dont know a single thing

Yeah UWSA does really try and trick you . Thats a big reason why i did poor in those; i was at least 30 points lower than my NBMEs, which is so wierd when i discussed it with others. But then i figured out why...many of the ones i thought were wierd really werent..i just missed what they wanted or i didnt follow where the question was leading me. NBME 13 and 15 are good to take; NBME 15 isnt that bad, save for a few questions..but its still alright . I am hoping my exam goes well on Friday..i really dont want a WTF block either..dunno what i would do . I am just praying for a good clean exam...one where i can get the score that i have been working towards all this time!

I did 12 a couple of days ago and it put me 10 higher than any of my prev NBMEs...so im hoping the exam goes like that!

I think that really it just shows how much the score I actually get is going to be down to plain luck in terms of whether the questions they ask happen to match my knowledge.

I totally agree with you. 10 pts in less than a week it is obviously too much.
I hope that both our exams will go like 12.
Good luck!

Question for anyone who's taken the exam, does USMLE purposely go out of their way to trick you like some UWorld questions do? Right now I find myself second guessing myself because of UWorld. There will be questions that seem to point to a disease, and you get it wrong and when you read the explanation it will say "The fact that blah blah blah was a distractor and should have been ignored because of blah blah blah".

Is the exam like that or do they give you the classic presentation and relevant information?

I remember a UWorld question that gave a case that sounded pretty much like MS, and then they had to go and throw in a sentence about symptoms after a hot shower. Now everyone knows that if you hear about a hot shower, you should start thinking about Polycythemia Vera as it can also cause nuerological symptoms. I ended up choosing MS cause I was just like "man, screw UWorld, they probably just trying to trick me." and it turned out to be MS.

So in short, are the USMLE writers as vindictive as UWorld writers? Does the test test what you know, or does it try to make you choose the wrong answer?

Unhappy Help needed...

hello everyone...
i need some advise please...
i have completed my second read of the stuff but i did NOT cram ANYTHING.... i just went thru the stuff... used uworld as aa study tool and did it subject wise and even topic wise in some areas... read all the explainations while i was also studying kaplan and taking uworld notes on FA....
almost done with UW....
NOW, i guess i have made a mistake by not doing UW random mode... i ahv heard everyone does that in Random, while i did not,,, which kind of freaks me out....
did NBME 3 offline= 236
i have the exam in about a month,,,and i have NO IDEA what to do....
i believe i dont remeber anything...and i am totally lost....
i am aiming for score 240+....
.
PLEASE HELP ME OUT.....
i have made FA as a final book and plus the uw notes as well... uw subscription remaining for about 14 days,,, shud i revise everything first and then do UW random for like 5 days? or just do uw random without revising anything,,, is doing it in a random mode an ABSOLUT NECESSITY???
i feel if i dont do it i cannot have the confidence of doing qs when they switch from one subject to another on the exam day.....
Any advice is appreciated.....regards...

Hi optimist,
Try taking a more recent NBME ONLINE! You cannot trust those answer keys that you find for the offline stuff... the official online version will give you a better idea of where you stand.

I, too, felt like everything was jumbled in my head towards the end of my study time... but as soon as you see a question prompt, things show flow back in pretty quickly. Don't panic, I think this happens to most people.

Have you totally finished the UWorld question bank? If you haven't, finish it up by doing full blocks, random and timed. If you have, you should try to do a few blocks of your incorrect ones, just to see if you've picked up the concept now.

But the main thing is to get the NBME online. I did forms 11, 12, 13, and 15. I haven't gotten my score yet, but I found 11 and 15 to be a little easier than 12 and 13.

Good luck

Ok man, I've actually found evidence that this is not true. Mainly from previous posts in this forum. The NBME is closed the week after Christmas, but that's it.
PROMETRIC centers may be closed, but that shouldn't have any impact on the reporting of scores. I believe we'll get our scores Jan. 8th. If you look thru the posts on this forum, people were getting their scores during the 2nd week of Jan.

Man the exam was a BEAST, i'll say that much . Lots of funny experiment type questions; they made immunology needlessly complicated...same with physiology as well. Not much of traditional pathology questions. I dont know what the exam writers were getting at with many of the questions. I dont know what subject the exam really focused on..it was a wide swath of everything. I wish they had stuck more to the traditional physio and path though. There wasnt much of molecular or genetics; very few biochem questions as well. All in all, i dont know...i doubt i'll get close to my NBMEs..i'm hoping for anything in the 230s or up; i'm already realizing a couple of the mistakes i made

Yo brother, I'm in the same boat! I keep remembering silly mistakes over and over again. It'll be like 3 AM, and then I'll have a flash of something dumb I did!

I took the exam Dec 5th... and all we can do now is wait :/

I feel like I won't be able to properly relax until I get some result. Let's keep each other some company and await these results together, eh?

Congrats on finishing!!

oh yeah man its 2:45 am and i'm remembering some dumb thing that i did; but it was more of not recognizing or not understanding the concept. I will say FA is short on physiology, especially when it comes to the renal drugs.

Ah man, I don't think we'll be getting our result on Christmas. The USMLE website says that they're closed on Christmas, and the week after Christmas. I'm expecting the result to come out Jan 8th :/

Anyone else in this boat, come join us and be miserable!

I can't speak for Cisterna, but I don't think we should be posting any questions we remember here. This is a public forum, and although it's really unlikely that the NBME will find out, I'd rather not take a chance.

Suffice it to say, the step looked very similar to UWorld question banks for me... trust in your preparation!

Hi guys
I need help.
I would like to know how many pts does uwsa overextimate.
My self assessment are:
NBME13 233 (12/9)
NBME12 242 (12/12)
UWSA2 256 (today)
I can't understand why my scores are so variable. My exam next wed. Aiming for 240+. what do you think? I'm concerned about the 13 result, I heard that it is the most predictive one so I don't know what could be my real score.
Any advice?
Thank you!

I dont think your scores are super variable, i've consistently heard that UWSA overestimates your score by 10 points or so, which puts your range 233-242...but no NBME / assessment can accurately predict your score for sure because every exam is different, some questions you'll get and others you wont! All we can do is figure out what our weaknesses are and work hard at those, you prob have a solid chance of a 240 mate

Default Should I cancel my exam?

Hey guys, I am giving the exam on 20th December. But I feel pretty low on my confidence levels. I have read FA twice and have completed my U World too. But I am really struck . I cannot remember a thing. I have already extended my test window due to my ill health. And now this. Taking this exam was not a welcome step for my parents as I am an IMG. And If I fail, my residency chances would be low. Especially when I am aiming for a surgical residency. Lately I have been very hard on myself. Its nothing like I want to run away or something. But I got to be honest too. Can anyone give me an honest advice.

I did the nbme15 today (the last one before the exam) in order to understand which is my real range. I ended up with 257. Based on this last score what could be my range?
My exam next wed
Thank you!

I am sure that we are going to pass our exams with good scores.
What is your target and how is your preparation going?

My target is just as high as i can get, but ill be happy with >240. My last NBMEs were 261, 257, and 271 so am hoping that gives a good margin. Ive slowed down a LOT in these past few days, i think im just ready to get it over with, but ive been finding it hard to stay focused, i hope i havent sabotaged myself with that! Right now im just trying to go over areas which ive been finding hard, but honestly i think its going to mostly come down to luck on the exam with the harder questions, and i dont think there is really any way to prepare for the harder ones...you either get it or you dont, we just gotta maximize our chances with the easy and medium ones.

Really impressive! With those nbme scores u can target very very high!
Regarding the real exam, I totally agree with u. I think that the preparation allow u to get a high result, but for very high score u need to be lucky to guess/know the harder ones.
GOOD LUCK MAN!

Man I think you are set, your nbme scores are excellent. Yeah you gotta maximize your chances with the easy and medium ones.. I'm still kicking myself cause I realized I missed some easy ones .

Ill prob feel the same way, i think you only ever remember your mistakes...theres so many questions tho that i think the curve will be much kinder than in the NBMEs so a couple of easy misses here and there shouldnt hurt things too much.

How did you find the question length compared to NBMEs? much longer or about the same?

Actually I thought they were longer... They really try and drag stuff out.. Which is annoying when you have the time crunch. One thing though, I was finishing blocks with at least 25-30 mins to spare.. So i was able to go over my questions and make any changes and what not.. Or just ruminate on a few if need be. I think the time crunch wasn't as bad for me because I've been doing practice tests for a while now. Yeah I think as a whole we tend to remember the ones we got wrong more than the ones we got right... Although I remember some of the ones I got right as well, lol.

i thought biostats was somewhat tricky; it wasnt as clean cut as it is maybe in FA or U world (i have no idea if my answers were wrong or right). I dont really remember how the molecular bio was; there wasnt that much of it, but it was a bit tough as well, maybe more confusing than tough. Overall, when i got done out of the exam, i didnt really feel great about it, but i guess thats what everyone feels like. I dunno, i feel like there more questions on my weak subjects than my strong subjects.
