Group talk November December 2013 Step 1 Exam Takers

Hello all!!
I am a foreign medical graduate from India, and I am currently preparing for Step 1. I would like to open a group discussion to anyone preparing for the exam in : November, December 2013, or either in January 2014!
I would like to help form a thread or contribute to any current discussions going on for Step 1 takers. A little about myself and my preparation so far is that:I am planning to give the exam in December 2013 or Jan 2014 according how well I do so far. Currently so far I have gone through Kaplan Notes and videos.
For Pathology I read Golijan and for biochemistry which is my weak point, I read Lipincott's Review for Biochemistry for some of my weak topic areas!
Im currently working on U world Q bank for the first time, but want to take an NBME self - assessment soon! because quite of a lot of recent test takers say its essential to take an NBME for self- assessment and to build one's confidence upto the exam. I haven't decided what NBME self- assesment to take first, but so far I have been advised by some fellow Medical Graduates who recently took the USMLE step 1 to take NBME 5 first and the others laters..I Just Wondering anybody's' else personal experience or thoughts on this matter or any advice which NBME to take first , and which one to save for last and close to exam date!?

This Thread is open to anyone whom are interested to discuss any questions done so far in U World Q bank, or any other topics may it be. I Hope we can help each other and support each-other to get through this important as well pain staking exam!!
Thanks so much in advance for any advice, and it will be much appreciated!
and I hope I get the chance to contribute to this forum as much as possible also!
Thanks!
Fmmedical Student

Smile Thanks! :)

Thanks Oscaryasser!

Do you think its best to do the U World Q bank once all finished then take NBME?? What are your thoughts on that. Im doing the Q bank, but its taking time from me to make notes from it, about the information I dont understand/concepts/ or just plain I dont know yet.. I have yet to read FA also

Any Advice Oscaryasser? should I also start incorporating FA?? Im bit confused because its taking me some time to finish all the Q bank..

Thanks!

Hey Dazulbri!

I think it would be a good idea maybe to take one NBME first and see where you stand and then strengthen your weak areas, and take another NBME.. Try to do start Qbanks after the first NBME, because doing UWorld is also another learning too, you actually learn more from UWorld I feel compared to my kaplan notes.. But notes are also essential in the process!!.. So I would say try to give another NBME after doing some questions of UWorld. NMBEs are self assessments, and its best taken when you also exposed yourself to U world too!
I also found your other question on the forum, since I also joined that thread too : "I am planning to take the test first week of december. How long are you studying a day? I have a 9 month baby, and I am able to study only 6 hours a day at the most... is that ok?"

Amount of hours of studying really depends how much productive study you get done. Your managing well it seems along side taking care of your baby. I don't have a child, but I work side by side with my studies..So I get in abt 6-8 hrs a day too.. I just make sure I stick to my study schedule no matter what, which can be hard at times too! But wish you all the best! and hopes this helps somewhat!

Thanks so much for the advises, and yes my plan is to keep taking NBMEs the whole way, one friend of mine told me to take them in different times during the last 2 months of studies. Good luck on your studies!

hey , me too appearing step 1 in same dec end . I had d slot in aug-oct but I have to extend it . I am doing presently uw , fa for first time starting from this sept with simultaneous 2nd reading , some places 3rd read. I read theory, fa nd uw daily .I find it is too much strenuous to do all those together . I lost my sleeps nd in tension. Revising whole text for 2nd time is taking a long time, I find it is needed , also writing notes from uw is taking unusually long time ,so in turn I end up finishing only 20-30 q from uw ,sometimes 1 block depending upon study time on theory , get lil time to read those , leaving those q exxplanations for later .I count may be I will b able to finish uw in this manner in end oct. so can take NBME in nov 1st wk.also will take kap q bank then.

Do u guys think I should reduce time on 2nd read nd spend more time on uw ?? I am very depressed as I find it is too tough, as forgetting txts so fast ... what others do ?

there is a site that allows us to group but this course.. the more the no. of interested members the cheaper and quicker we can access it..

i really want this course but its too expensive if i buy it alone.. you have to register at feedurbrain.com first to find out more.

you have to go register at this site feedurbrain.com first then go to this link i posted.then write" im interested" in the space under tis thread just like others members who have joined this group buy. you dont have to pay the money now. once we have enough intersted members, the group buy goes live. The forum moderators then post a payment link and the exact payment amount.it may seem complicated at 1st but its actually pretty easy and reliable.

Default Doing Kaplan Qbank

Hi Everybody!

I am on my second day of Qbank, I am doing 2 blocks a day and 20 pages of FA a day. My average score is 52%, is that really bad? Is there someone else doing Kaplan qbank, let me know how are you doing with your scores....

Smile Doing U world Qbank

Hey Dazulbri!

I have started U world, question bank 2 blocks a day. With writing notes along. I used Kaplan Q bank, for some time but left it, because I started focusing on U world instead. From recent exam takers they told me to focus more on U world, and understanding the concepts as much, and that too take it timed mode first. As for score, not great, but Im using U World Q bank as a tool for studying, and will be assessing myself by taking an NBME sometime. Hope this helps.

Hey Ashok!
I completely understand what your going through and its very common. I had the same doubt in my head also, and Many people told me to stick to UW as we learn from UW from doing questions, we might read and read as much as we can, unless we dont test ourselves reguarly we dont know how much knowledge we retained!! Hope that helps! All the best!!

Smile NBMEs!!!

Hey All!
Was wondering how everyone is doing? I have finished more than half of U world and about to take an NBME. Was wondering anybody's' views upon individual subject self assessment exams also offered by NBME? I know we have to take Comprehensive CBSSA NBMEs, and I think total are 7, anybody has preferences which ones should take first and which ones to save for last??

Any suggestions and Advice will be appreciated!! Thank you !!

My exam was supposed be Oct 25 (yesterday)...postponed it to Nov 22nd. Doing Molecular bio and genetics this past week. Is there anything that i can safely skip in molecular bio (the whole subject frustrates me to no end, but i need to know it in order to perform well on the exam)? What are the most important chapters in Kaplan for this subject?

Was planning on taking my exam on Dec 2, but im not happy with my NBME score (NBME 13: 221) So I may end up post-poning it I've been using Kaplan and UWorld pretty much exclusively (Pathoma for path) and I think my problem is that I havent really read through First Aid. That doesnt mean I havent used it, I used it, annotating UWorld and Kaplan concepts in there, but I think now I need to put more of an emphasis on high yield First Aid topics, so I think Im gonna concentrate on doing DIT to go through FA, then when im done, i'll re-read FA on its own. Im hoping that I can increase my score to a 240 before I take my exam

Dunno when I will take my exam, but one thing is for sure, I have no intention of extending my eligibility period (ends Dec 31). I still have my extension available but I dont wanna do that. Would much rather hunker down and get the job done now.

ADH acts on the medullary segment of the collecting duct
Aldosterone acts on the cortical segment of the collecting duct

Don't confuse the two- goodluck

Your scores show u are in good shape for dec 3rd!
Wishing u good luck! Btw how has your strategy been? I mean how have u been able to consistently increase your score?

Nbme 5 n 6 were straight forward usmle world and first aid knowledge..then the gap between 6 n 15 was filled by kaplan q bank ( 83 %) and usmle rx done just 40 percent coz I found it to be a waste of time..
Then continuous revision of fa fetched me these scores..
Aiming for anything 250 +..

Just asking is nbme 11 easier than above nbme or difficult..eager to know as it is said to be closest predictor..

Guys I want to clarify something. If intravenous drug abuse is written what's our top answer. Hep B or C? Cuz it's the risk factor for both. Blood transfusion hep C and sexual hep B. tattoo and ivdu gives different answers sometimes so it confuses me. I think it's B though but wanted to make sure

That sounds right...but one exception is a medical professional with a needle prick is likely Hep B

If a medical professional gets a needle stick it is definitely hep b..if u wanna differrntiate between hep b n c u need to look for further clues in the question stem..hep b would be a severe presentation where as hepc would be kind of asymptomatic with vague lymphadenopathy..if a pic is given then you would see ballooning degeneration with ground glassing of hepatocytes with mononuclear infiltration in hep b...in hep c there would b no ground glassing of hepatocyte..
Still if nothing suggests the answer I suggest go wid b as it is more common..

About nbme 13..
The exam is kinda vague with some wtf questions. But others u can work ur way thru..

Did nbme 11 yst scored 257..
Waitin for last n final nbme 7 wich will b hopefully next Wednesday..

projection it like a feeling inside you and think the other have the same like ( a man who have feeling to other women , he think his wife cheating on him ) so it is feeling inside you and think the other ( your partner for ex ) have the same

Transference it is unconscious shifting the emotion for one person to another ) for ex you are engery for your father bcz he treat you like a child . and then later you put your angery to your therapiest.

so projection it like you think other have the same feeling inside you . transference you shift your emotion for one person to another .

i hope it is clear to you know

good luck

also transference it could be negative like the example above , or postive like

(You meet someone at a party who reminds you of a favorite aunt and you find yourself feeling warmly towards this new acquaintance.)

guys my exam is scheduled for friday, i took UWSA2 today, got 221. Really dissapointed after getting a 254 on my NBME 15 last month . I dont know what to do...my main problem it looks like is over thinking a lot of the questions and not recalling microbiology and pharm, along with recall of other subjects in general. However much i study both of the subjects, i keep forgetting it. Not sure whether to postpone the test or just roll the dice and go take it....

my prob is recall too man . i see a question and start thinking too deeply about it and then answer wrong .. i did some silliest mistakes in uwsa2..
all i can say is dont worry, dont freak out, one of your nbme is really good if i remember, i know you are among the ones who'll ace this test

However much i study both of the subjects, i keep forgetting it. Not sure whether to postpone the test or just roll the dice and go take it....
all i have heard about uwsa is its the least predictive! and nbme 13 15 r most..u got an amazing score in 15 considering ts shitty and tricky questions. so relax! dont worry about the one practice test! what matters is what u d over there
can i ask u few qs about nbme 15 if u got them right? cant find the answers anywhere and my exam is in a couple days :/

Lol I m a woman
Ok so one was the pic of esophagoscopy which had a mass at esophagus trip junction and Bacteira was asked. I read helicobacter somewhere but I don't understand how is that causing it :|
Then was a weird pic of kidney and unilateral nephrectomy. Was the hydronephros? I marked ARPk that was wrong

yeah its just h pylori...that will cause cancer, i know lol it stumped a lot of people, even me at first. Yep its hydronephrosis, i got it wrong as well , i think i put ARPK just like you. ARPK doesnt look so smooth on the external surface, its very lumpy and bumpy. I am taking NBME 12 today, i'll report back here as to how i do.

Hi guys!
exam in mid december.
I'm doing fa and uworld (1st round unused timed 68%, than 2nd pass on the incorrect).
nbme 7 online 231 (3 weeks ago)
5 offline around 238 (3 weeks ago)
3 offline around 230 (1 wk ago)
4 offline around 240 (1 wk ago)
weekest areas are bs and microbiology.
aiming for 240+ with less than a month left. I have to work hard on it!

I'm thinking to do kaplan qbank for this last month to try new questions and see how they are compared to uworld. How do u think about it? Does it worth?

I think its not a good idea to just focus on kaplan qbank on this last month especially when the exam is this close , instead what you could do is do the kaplan qbank questions of your weak subjects i-e Behaviour and microbiology and focus on FA and revise the uworld concepts (i hope u annotated or made notes) , also atleast 2 weeks before exam again do an ONLINE NBME to see where do you stand.

Well it's not surprising! Biochem is voted as the most demanding subject of step 1. As for the genetics u must master it well and Kaplan does great job!
Good luck!

If you absolutely have to take one assesment exam then i would suggest do NBME because UWSA is not well correlated with your actual exam score . Do either NBME 13 OR 15. Dont panic , you still have two weeks to go.Give a complete pass to biochem and genetics and then give an NBME
