Experiences step 1 prep:237

hi guys,

my score is 237..and i am very happy to get this score..

i wanted to write my prep bcs every wednesday i used to wait for others to post their scores and exam experiences..mayb it can help someone..

my prep has not been straight forward..i prepared for mle(really well) and i was supposed to gve my exam in the first quarter of 2012..i had some issues in my personal life and for various reasons (mainly a low self esteem lol) i thought i wont do well in the exam, so one week before the exam i cancelled my test.only reason i mention this is so that if there are other people who think like me..dont do that..have faith in urself, be courageous..and trust in god and ur parents.

so after i became even more of an old grad..i decided in nov 2012 to pursue mle..i picked up step 1 bks after a gap of more than 6 months in dec 2012..took long breaks for c.s and observerships (during which i didnt read a word of step 1)..and finally gave exam on aug 29th..score reported today is 237.

exam related advice from my prep..
1.read kaplan notes and goljan
2.dont ignore ur weak areas..i have an asterisk mark in front of subjects i have always liked and poor performance in anatomy which i was always weak at.
3.make notes from the start of ur prep..i skipped f.a bcs i was in the habit of making notes in my kaplan book..stick to the maerial you are comfortable with and do what suits you best.
4.do 2 qbanks..
uw is must
chose rx if you need to memorise core knowledge and f.a facts..keep in mind that doing rx is more time consuming
do kaplan if you are thorough with reading theory and are looking for additional qts
personally i did kaplan and left rx after doing 33% of it ( i didnt like it much)

5. about xrays/mri/ct

know basic stuff only because there is no way u can master it..look at wayne univ website for ct

6. heart sounds

know them...i had qts where there was no clue in question stem about deciphering heart sound.

7. ignore any and all advice on forums if your exam is one month or less away..if you are doing fine, stick to ur own plans, dont panic..and dont read new stuff.

8. 15 days before the exam do revise theory and can cut down on qts..because u have to have knowledge to answer qts..by this stage we have honed our test taking skills.

9.opinion about nbme and uwsa

uwsa overestimates..but very good questions..treat like study source

nbme: 12 and 15 seem closest to score

i did offline previous nbme;s and wasted tonnes of time finding answers..please google maryam nbme explanations and find answers from there..i wish i had known this earlier.

we shud do all old nbme's only if v have sufficient time..few qts repeat...but decide if its worth putting in so much time for few qts..

.....my last weeks of prep were not so gud..i read posts about high scores n i was worried..but i realised that i wud rather have a well rounded c.v then spend more time on prep...and i went for the exam..

my self assessment scores:
nbme 15:231 ( 2 months earlier)
nbme 12: 231 5 weeks out
uwsa1: 247...4.5 weeks out
uwsa 2: 257..4 weeks out

last month:

revise n revise
entertain NO thoughts of postponing if u r gtn a decent score
finalise travel plans well in advance

because of my uncertainty i had lot of dfclty getting aprometric date...keep this factor in mind

exam day:
take breaks after every block

i had coffee n something to eat after evry block!

well that;s it..i think this post has become very long..but well..and gl to everyone..stay strong.

hi,

in my opinion doing 2 qbanks is enuf..core material tested is same..so once u hone ur test taking strategy u can go for the exam...and it is a gud idea to keep in touch with theory.

rx takes more time than kaplan bcs we read fa explanation in detail..so minimum 20 days (there are 3000 qts) ..if u do it exclusively..15 days for kaplan atleast.

about booking exam date check if u have sent documents from med school etc and decide accordingly and depending on availability of prometric dates..finalise ur exam date depending on the level of ur prep.

biostat: basic qts...sensitivity, specificity etc..

b.s: doctor patient relationship qts...which i guessed..there is no way to prepare for those.

ct and mri: i had...i like wayne univ website....i had xrays too...i dont know if i answered those rite..if possible look up chest x rays.

i had lots of anat, biochem and immuno...

hope it helps...

i wanted to read the 100 qts bk..but i didnt have time..

i got a star in b.sc..

gross anat and histo..low performance...there wsnt lot of histo in exam but gross anat yes..

4 preparing gross anat..i had only done qts..uw+ kaplan...i thought its low yield..but a lil extra studying mite be good..

p.s everyone's exam is different...it mite be less tested for other test takers
