hi KAMIDI, i took my exam on 18th september.. i felt like i knew about 35 to 38 questions in a block.. rest i had doubt.. i marked app 8 questions in each block. overall i felt good wen i left the prometric.. bt now i doubt if i had done well.. because i started identifying the mistakes i did i dont really know wat to expect.. nothing can be done now..so trying to postpone the worries for 3 weeks.. how about you??

I have been reading this forum for a while now but haven't posted anything yet.
I took Step 1 on Sept 18th. It's only been a little over a week but it feels like forever! I guess I will have the results only on Oct 9th. Having nightmares as several people say. I had taken two NBMEs (15 and 13) online 4 weeks apart and they were both on the 220s, for the actual exam, I was hoping for slightly above US average (or basically what I got in the NBMEs) but had the impression my actual exam was very different from the assessments and even from uworld. Blocks 5 and 6 were so hard I wanted to cry, marked way too many questions on those two and had little to no time to go back.
After I left I had the impression I failed. That exam was brutal. 8 hours of that level of stress is just too long. The test is more about endurance and how you manage your stress than your actual knowledge I think.
I just pray to God for the score I need to get into residency (whatever that score might be, He knows better) or that He is by my side comforting me in case I don't pass...
Well and if it's not a passing score it's because it wasn't meant to be. (trying to tell myself this each day).
Although all of us are very familiar the statistics, we have to remember that each case is each case... I do know some people who were able to get into a good residency program having failed step 1 in the first attempt. They do look at your whole profile.

Hi, have you taken it in the US? They say if you've taken it on a Wednesday it is still usually 3 weeks from that.
How was your form like? As I explained I thought it was very different than expected. I did have some straight forward questions but for most of them were very different in style than what I have seen in UW or in the NBME forms I've taken. It worries me... I guess we just have to wait and see...

Thats the spirit. Good luck man. I am sure you did well. Your NBMEs look pretty good. I know for sure you passed.

I know people say this all the time and I thought I'd be different, but the exam is a blur. People are ore likely to remember things they probably got right than wrong, and since most people get the majority right, it's hard to remember too many details. I wil say this, the thing that bothered me the most on the exam were pictures and arrows. In hindsight, I would have used Rapid Review instead of Pathoma because it has more images. When studying, no matter what it is, look at pictures, when you read about thyroid cancers or anything pathological google images pictures of the disease. The exam seems to be trending towards giving less "buzzwords" in the stem and instead letting you interpret the image. The arrows are probably easy if you have physio down pact, but for me I was always between 2 answers on the what's up, what's down portion.

Correct Answer My Experience

*Old IMG Graduate (2007)

*Preparation Time:
-5 Months
(Working full time - Only got 2 weeks off before the test)

*Material:
-Kaplan Notes & Videos (except for anatomy and behavioral science as couln't find time for them)
- 1st Aid (Two times)
- UW (just one time & couldn't have time to finish it (350 question left)
- NBME 07 (failed it) , 12 (204) & 15 (196)

*Exam day:
-Felt the test was longer and harder than I expected
-Had a problem with finishing each block at time !!
-Had no idea if I was gonna pass it or not

*Score: 206

*My Feelings: Happy , even it is a low score but that is fair enough regarding my preparation. Thanks GOD

Congratulations for all

Congratulations. It sounds like a decent score. Can you please share your experience? As you said you started identifying your mistakes after the test... approx how many questions you were in doubt per block? I am sure its difficult to remember after this long waiting time... But still was curious to know if you remember?
I can remember at least 10 mistakes and doubtful about many,,,,Oh have no idea how will this whole week pass... its taking forever,,,

sure i will post my experience....no doubt this forum has really helped me...but for now point is: 70 % of exam is gonna come from FA, 15-20% from UWORLD and remaining 10% from anywhere and you can do nothing about it....so just focus on 90% part don't waste your energy on that 10%.....keep calm and don't let pressure and time management ruin all your prep...best wishes for you all and may ALLAH help you all in your exams

my experience
total 6-7 months..dedicated study 4 months..
started with kaplan videos and lectures..helped alot in laying a foundation.as i had forgotten almost everything of nonclinical.
goljan for patho..was selective..i found it very vast and cudnt retain much of it
u world q bank...at first i went subject wise as i cunt remembr much from my first read,so revised ech subj kaplan along with firstaid..and did uworld Qs from that subj timed, taking notes in2 firstaid..sum Qs i felt tired or was in a rush to finish block that i didnt bother to take notes...biggest MISTAKE i did..so watever time it takes take down notes...2nd round did mixed random and esp marked Qs.
3 weeks awayfrm sched date i did uwsa and i actually found myself so much confused and in a bad shape esp in molecular biolgy and pathology...buti was suprised with a score of 250..i knew it overpredicted..i postponded my exam a month..did firstaid and did pathoma videos as i found by basics in patho weak as i was selective in my read frm goljan..PATHOMA was a very gud decision..i subscribed kaplan Qbank, but cudnt complete it and its not very helpfull as uworld//

nbme 7(4 weeks be4)..........242
uwsa (3 weeks be4 exams)..260
nbme 13 (3 weeks........)...250
nbme 12 (2 weeks....).....257
nbme 15 (5 days be4)....252
real deal...257
just wanted to say..do wat u think is best for u..others method or advice shud be considered,,but u knw urself best,,,i was adviced by many against pathoma during the final month of prep..said it wud take up lot of time...but finally it was very very useful for me..gud luck to all ...it is a very doable exam..do ur best..ur hardwork will be rewarded..

review firstaid and uworld is the best again at this point.take as many nbmes as u can..make sure u knw ver u went wrong in the nbmes and work on it..its very imp..i had lot of similar concepts on real exam from nbmes..i remembr one Q from biostatistcs- same concept with diff stem and numbrs..i actually had guessed it in nbme and got it rite,,but i didnt knw the concept.so screwed up in real test...so make concepts REAL clear...

aslam alikum all.
let me start in name of ALLAH the most merciful the most beneficent.
.
i am a pakistani student and started prep at end of 3rd year, continued in 4th year and half of final year.....when you are student you have great flexibility of time so better take exam during medical studies...anyways my prep goes as follow:
.
kaplan(except patho) : i crammed all of them as i thought it could land me in 260s..my idea was: how could such a big exam have 70% of its content from a small 400 page book??? (but this practice turned to be a total waste of time)...Advice: better give 2-3 reads, understand each and every concept and move on to first aid....keep that the purpose of kaplan is understanding, but it does not mean that you start skipping concepts by considering kaplan a pile of rubbish...
.
patho: i read goljan and i loved it...i never counted how many reads i gave to this book ....this had 2 impacts: first i got a star in patho, second this left little space in my mind for other subjects.....advice: better read pathoma it covers almost every imp topic...if u are going for goljan then just focus on concepts and mechanisms,mechanisms,mechanisms...
.
video lecs: worthy of listening are kaplan physio, biochem and genetics,pharma,behaviour,biostat...for patho: both goljan and pathoma are good.
.
multimedia: imp xrays, histo slides you come across...for ct scans and mri, focus on recognizing the normal structures in different sections..
.
first aid: i hated this book...i started it at end of my prep and thats why i could never read it dedicately (just gave 2 reads) and this is the major reason i could not cross 250....when i came out of exam center , i knew what mistakes i had made and believe me all of them are mentioned in first aid.....so better start using this book asap in your prep and read it 7 times atleast....my friend did this and scored 247.
.
uworld: the best source in steps prep....really loved it...must must do it online and take 2 month subscription..i did random timed mode and my percentage was 74% and cumulative was 85....but i could only finish the 70 % part of qbank for the first time.....advice: do not follow my foot steps and do the q bank atleast twice..read explanations and take extensive notes, not just what is written in educational purpose....while doing qbank focus on your weak areas...
.
kaplan q bank: do not try this at school or home
.
usmle rx: very simple but good for memorizing first aid... infact it mentions some v imp concepts which neither first aid nor uworld covers like neurogenic claudication, cauda equina syndrome etc.....only read those explanations which are either new to you or you got them wrong.
.
nbmes: all ofline.
nbme 5: 220(before starting uworld)
nbme 7: 232(after ending uworld)
nbme 12: 238(2 weeks before exam)
nbme 13: 237(2 days before exam).
.
took 1 month b/w uworld and exam.
.
exam day: went smooth...time management was a big factor....exam is doable and believe me questions were really interesting (unlike nbmes)...before taking exam, better make your mind that you will make mistakes and this is natural....and do not waste your time on finding answers to wtfs...
.
IMP:
-control your nerves,do not get depressed or grandiose ..... this is game of nerves, trick and management...days near exam get really hard but have your faith in GOD....
-avoid wasting time on searching internet for materials, reading researches and reading big books...i read gyton, ganong for physio;lipponcot and harper for biochem; goodman and gillman and ketzung for pharma....i read all the high yields and brs series......but this left little time for revision and consolidation and in the end the condition got so messed up that i forgot even basic facts e.g barbiturates are inducers or inhibitors?
thanks to first aid for saving me then....so do not do not do this..
.
and in the end if you have done hard work,it will pay...have faith in you...you can do this...i have seen people loosing hope and belief in them..you better not be one of them....
.
i only came to realize lately that steps are like marathon: doing one phase efficiently does not guarantee success, its the complete package of performance that decides....so do not ignore your weak points..
.
i wish you all very good luck....may ALLAH help all of us.amen

exam was not like any nbme....of course some questions were repeated from nbmes and its recommended that you go through all nbmes before exam...but exam felt much more like uworld to me...
nbmes try to minimize your score by using obscure and vague questions but real exam doesn't do so...it applies at least some concept even in hardest questions.....
so do not get over worried....if u are putting as much effort as you can you will definitely score high...believe in yourself, people

i took NBME 15 the other day...got a 640/254. Was feeling pretty good, but then i took UWSA1 and it really knocked me back, could only manage 480/214. I dont know how that happened, a total reversal. I felt like all this prep i have been doing went up in smoke . A lot of the questions were really confusing and on top of that, the test had a lot of genetics and molecular bio, two subjects i am awful in. What do you suggest i can do from here?

almost every subject was tested but majority was patho, pharma and physio....pharma was straight forward and FA is enough for that....genetics was easy but my friend got soo much genetics and molecular in his exam....b.s was easy but biostat was toughhh...infact i scored borderline in b.s and biostat coz some questions were like "i don't get where is the question in your question "
in last 2 months i put 4-5 hrs per day....coz it becomes hard for me to study in end...but last 15 days were 18 hrs a day...

i took 7, 11, and 13 many months ago, failed the first two, borderline pass in 13. I never took 12. I took 13 back in June, and then studied hard, changed up my strategy. Took NBME 15 last week, and got that score, 640/254. I honestly couldnt believe it, but i was feeling good. Then i took UWSA1, totally threw me for a loop and managed only 480/214.

okay that isnt too bad, the gap isnt far off, but my gap was HUGE (214 vs 254- a 40 point spread, that has to be significant). I really got freaked out and upset on sunday night, when i took UWSA1. Cancelled my exam appointment that i had for this Friday and decided to regroup. My poor performance in molecular bio and genetics, and to some extent, behavioral science, really hit me hard and affected me for the rest of the exam.

personally for me it was hard in the sense that half the questions made no sense; i couldnt figure out what they wanted. Also my struggles with genetics, mollecular bio and behavioral made it a lot worse. I think the U world Q bank is downright easy compared to the UWSA1 test.

So how are you improving your biochem n genetics?i mean you are reading Kaplan or listening to lectures or doing questions.ive heard that there ate two sets of exams one has got quiet doable genetic n behv science questions n other set is loaded with genetics so it will be a bit of luck too

but wat i thought was after doin a couple of nbmes i went into the UWSA with nbme approach... in other words, nbme was more like straight forward questions n ur score depends on how much of the huge syllabus you covered n mugging up FA can get u a better score in nbmes... but UWSA is all about how well u can apply ur concepts so just FA isnt enough, u need to b good at conceptual stuff n also scoring is too lineant on UWSA...
i have heard way too many people say actual exam was more like UW or UWSA but the actual scores r more close to nbme ones n that UWSA is overpredictive..

I am reading Kaplan for molecular bio (the lectures are pretty good, but the chapter 4 lecture for some reason will not play). I had read it early on in my prep, but i have forgotten a lot of stuff, so just doing that now. I am doing genetics from High Yield Genetics and FA...my main problem in genetics is setting up the problems, so hopefully the high yield book should help me with that. I can definetly see how the UWSA1 wants you to apply the concept, but the questions were seriously weird...many of them. I have done excellent in the U world Q bank, but many UWSA1 questions are nothing like the U world Qbank.
