Hello ratung,

UWorld is by far the superior qbank product that you will find for the Step 1 exam. Keep in mind that a qbank is a learning tool, not a gauge of your progress; use the NBME's to gauge progress. Seeing as how you say you forgot all of UWorld, you should get it and go through it properly and slowly in order to extract and master the valuable information that it contains. Everything you need can be found in this qbank, so don't use multiple qbanks with the hope of learning more and more... master 1 and if you need to practice more questions, then move onto another.

I hope that helps... this is the best option and also will significantly simplify the entire process for you!

Best of luck.

Dr. Paul

Dr. Paul do you think one qbank is enough to score very high like 250+? I think
more questions you do is better for learning especially if you are poor in retaining material?

There is a fine balance you have to use in approaching a qbank... The first thing is you must realize that it isn't the act of 'doing as many questions as possible' that will boost your score.. You can do nothing but questions for the entire preparatory phase, but if you aren't properly extracting information from them and mastering the material, then it doesn't matter how many questions you do because realize that the USMLE is going to throw things at you in the most obscure fashion they can imagine; so simply doing volumes of q's doesn't help unless you are truly making the effort to learn.

Another thing you should realize is that questions need to be approached in a way that helps you 'train' for the rigors of the real-life USMLE exam... this means its important to approach them in a timed mode, to mimic the real exam experience.

After going through a full question bank TWICE, and when I say twice I don't mean going through the questions again in MCQ format, but going through them in a way that ensures you truly know the info, not just remember the question from before, you will have truly learned the information. After you feel as though you have a rock-solid understanding of the basic sciences from an initial question bank + your study notes, then you can use another question bank to further train yourself for fast-paced question answering as well as fine-tune your knowledge with any other minor details that you learn from those questions.

The reason why I recommend the UW qbank is simply from years of success with it. I personally find that it delivers a very accurate example of the difficulty, length, and topics that the real USMLE is testing... obviously it isn't perfect, but I have used nothing but UW and I have my students stick to UW and we've had some really great success with it.

I hope that helps!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions, I am happy to help by sharing the strategies that have been successful for us here at The Academy.

Best of luck!

Dr. Paul
