Listening Am i on the right track

Hey everyone!

So im an IMG, been preparing for step 1 for abt almost 6 months now!
Finished kaplan videos with adding points to kaplan books+ Goljan audio with transcript x 5months.

For the past 1 month im doing FA+UW.
Done with Beh Sci, Psychiatry, Molecular Cellular biochem, Genetics until now.

The method I use is:
Finish memorizing a subject on FA eg: Beh sci. then do UW corresponding subject, Read entire explanations,Annotate any points which r in uw but not in fa. Start next subject.

I plan to do this till I finish entire FA + finish 1 pass of UW.
Around 550 pages+ 2200 qs
@18 pages/day on FA days + 46qs/day on Uw days
30 days + 48 days = ~78-80 days in total!
Each day, i sit for about 10-12 hours for studying.

NOW PROBLEMS/DOUBTS:
1. Is that a realstic/ doable plan?

2. I have read ppl do 50 pages of fa/day on this forum! Ive have never been able to do that. Infact I find it tough to do 18 pages/day!!!!
I think I have been a slow learner but I want to know:
How can I increase my speed?

3.Is everyone doing 30-50 pages per day & only im the tortoise?

4.How long does it take for 2nd pass of Fa and UW?

5.AM I ON THE RIGHT TRACK?

u r doin good...
but i think it is best to do uworld in random, timed mode... yes,i mean the entire qbank...
we always want to check the amount we grasped after a subject reading with the help of a qbank but it would b better to save uworld entirely for random, timed mode... rather i recommened u use other qbanks like kaptest or usmlerx for subject-wise thing...
i would say, u r not using uworld to its maximum potential which is the crucial thing in step 1 prep.... so,better go for timed-random mode...
rest all u r doin good...n dont concentrate on people doin so many pages or questions per day,its important how u stratagise things as per ur strengths... at the end of the day its not about how many pages, its always about how many concepts u could digest...

Hi there,

Please see answers below your questions.

NOW PROBLEMS/DOUBTS:
1. Is that a realstic/ doable plan?

Yes, this is a good plan. Realistically though I sense you will burnout with 10-12 hours of studying per day, so try to take a day off on the weekend to refresh.

2. I have read ppl do 50 pages of fa/day on this forum! Ive have never been able to do that. Infact I find it tough to do 18 pages/day!!!!
I think I have been a slow learner but I want to know:
How can I increase my speed?

Forget about what pace others are keeping... there's no correlation between speed at which people move through their FA and scores... quality vs. quantity applies in this situation, so stick to the pace that works for you.

3.Is everyone doing 30-50 pages per day & only im the tortoise?

Tortoise vs the hare... the tortoise wins - slow and steady is always a good strategy for the usmle's (but don't study for 6 more months that is too long)

4.How long does it take for 2nd pass of Fa and UW?

It should take you as long as it takes to truly learn and master the material... there's absolutely ZERO point in getting through it in 1 week if you don't know the info and if you can't apply it to questions you are being asked.

5.AM I ON THE RIGHT TRACK?

100%.. keep working hard!

Thank you for replying to every question! this was motivating

I've already been studying for abt 6 months and looks like I'll take abt 3 more months to finish all the material I want to cover!
Hope to pick up pace as I go & finish exam soon by this year end!
Anyway,I shall keep working hard & hope it pays off! Thanks again

Default Still struggling! :(

So, I find that I keep falling into this rut of slow studying for some days & then get depressed (bcoz ive been preparing for too long but its going nowhere), take a break thinking I might be burnt out, but never have the motivation 2 get back to studies! I keep contemplating if I should give up! but since ive been dreaming abt this for almost 3 yrs now I dont want to quit!

Any1 else had similar experience? any tips/advice would be appreciated..

Background:- IMG, been preparing for step 1 officially* from feb 2013!
Finished kaplan videos with adding points to kaplan books+ Goljan audio with transcript
-FA+UW. Done with Beh Sci, Psychiatry, Molecular Cellular biochem, Genetics,Micro & Immuno until now.
Feel like I do not remember anything!!!

[*Also, I had done some prep in 2010 & 2011 but it got interrupted repeatedly coz of personal issues- lost my gpa to Ca., my Dad to an accident & almost lost my sister from a fall & I had to be there for my family!]........
so I generally am in a depressed environment with no way out of it!...... The prometric centre in my city has been shut for usmle since Jan 2013..Sometimes I feel like everything is going against me & maybe I shud change my dream!!

A study partner will immensely help you to remain motivated & booking an exam date will be a pressure to keep you motivated (If you book now, you'll have 6 months in which you can write your exam, including just $65 for extra 3 month eligibility period extension).

Agree with the booking an exam date, nothing will get you focused and studying to your full potential like a date counting down

Bro you are working hard but you don't have confidence. Sitting for Usmle is the biggest prob, even I am in the same boat. Working and study for usmle is hard but if we sit and study at home they comment us that we are sitting w/o working. But scores are important than passing and ppl here don't understand.
