Experiences tejas17k Step 1 Experience 252

i am using this forum for help and guidance through my entire step 1 journey. i think its time to put down my experience and guide others...

time required for prep: 8 and a half months

material used: kaplan lecture notes, kaplan videos, goljan rapid review (v imp), first aid and usmle medical ethics by conrad fischer.

preparation:
first i started with kaplan videos and kaplan lecture notes. these lay the basic foundation for the entire step 1 (except patho).it takes around 2-3 months for kaplan with videos. then for pathology i think goljan rapid review is best, since pathology forms 60-70% of questions a good book is a must. In fact goljan rapid review is one of the best books i have come across in medicine. its takes time to read (i took one month to finish) but it is totaly worth the time.

after the first read of all subjects, i started then quick second read of kaplan (without videos) and rapid review. second read took 2 months.

after second read i did kaplan qbank online. its a ok question bank, not too good not too bad. it has around 2200 questions, i did 100 questions a day. didn't revise it.

then i did first aid, the most imp book in the prep. its an awesome book. first time it takes time to finish, it took me 18 days. while i was doing kaplan qbank i saw that my ethics score was very low so i bought usmle medical ethics by conrad fischer. i found it very useful. it clears a lot confusion in ethics, since imgs have low scores in that usually (btw i am from india).

once i finished with first aid and ethics book i did uworld. its the best qbank you can ever get. a lot of information that's not given anywhere, is in this qbank. i made a entire notebook by writing down notes from uworld. again i did 100 questions a day for 2200 questions.

last month i did first aid twice and revised around 900 marked questions from uworld.
i also did my notes from uworld in last few days. i also read ethics book of conrad fischer again ( i found many concepts from exam from this book).

i gave uwsa 1,2 and three nbme (7,13,15) to check my preparation.

SCORES:

uwsa 1 : 261
uwsa 2 : 265

nbme 7: 242 ( i missed three questions in this form)
nbme 13: 250
nbme 15: 250

exam on sept 18. i found the exam like nbme only, in terms of length of questions and its difficulty. time management is the key.

final result on october 9: 252

feel free to ask me anything.
thank you

Congrats on ur score!

I'm confused though...how does missing 2-3 questions on nbme 7 give a score in 240s? Do u mean 2-3 per block?

233 is a good score, the fact that you missed 3 questions...you have over a month for your exam.. keep reading first aid.. maybe twice.. read topics that you are weak in... manage time well and make sure you dont miss any question.. m sure you will do well

no i didn't miss 2-3 question per block, i missed 3 questions from the entire 4 block nbme 7... 3 questions missed is a lot, and makes a difference in nbme score

Default Congratulations!

That is a top notch score! Did you take all your NBMEs and UWSAs around the same time period few weeks before the exam? How was the exam compared to say, NBME 15? Question lengths etc. Were those Behavioral Science "what would be the best response" questions doable? Thanks and best of luck for the rest of your journey!

thanx... yes i did all the nbme and uwsa few weeks before exam. Exam is much like nbme 15, question length and difficulty wise...behaviour questions are like what would be the best response types, and most of them doable...

u might need to go through kaplan lecture notes once, then you can go to first aid... it wont take much time from kaplan...

i studied solo.. with constant touch in people on this forum

i know goljan is a big book, but dont be afraid of that since you dont need remember it... you just have to understand it... dont try to memorize anything from that book, just understand why a particular thing is happening... and yes i did the whole book... bt its not that much since i didnt stress my self to remember anything, i just understood the content..

yes i did everything online.. from kaplan qbank to uworld to uwsa to nbme..

i think you are doing fine... once you finish the first read then start a qbank.. uworld... i would suggest if you are doing kaplan qbank offline then dont do it online just go ahead with uworld online...

good luck for your prep

Hello. I am done with CK. And now I have started prep for step 1. Have to complete my prep in 7-8 months. I am in a confusion as whether to go for kaplan qbank or not?? As many people say that its useless. Kindly tell me that do you think that it helped you in your real exam reagarding its concepts? Also tell me that did you made notes of kaplan qbank explanations as well?

kaplan qbank is not an essential resource... looking back i wont say its a must do for step 1 prep... although i made notes from it, but had no time to review them at last... if you have a time crunch you can go ahead without it..

exam question are comparable to uworld... so if you find uworld questions difficult then you may have to work over it... try to understand from kaplan and then again do the same question...

nbme are very very important to do... they are a useful indicator of your preparation... the latest form nbme 15 is quite similar to real exam in difficulty and question length..

when i look back now, all that kaplan qbank did was, it introduced me to the type of questions that exam has... bt that is done by uworld too... i dont think i must to do kaplan qbank... you can easily get the score you want without kaplan qbank...

how is NBME 15 compared to NBME 13? I have seen a few questions from 15 and they looked sort of tricky...was the real exam more like the earlier NBMEs or was it like 15?

I got 234 in form 15 and I'm now going through my 2nd round of UW

I did UWSA2 1.5 month ago and got 240

My 1st round average was 64%

my 2nd round average so far is 83%

What do you think please ???
i did nbme 7 4 weeks before the exam and nbme 15 2 weeks before exam. i think you should go through first aid once and then give another nbme to see where you stand... i m sure you can get 240 plus if you keep on working hard

I will go through FA and my personal notes one more time of course beforejust before the exam ,, but now I have to complete my 2nd round. I will do Form & in the middle of this 2nd round 4 weeks before the exam time. Am I in a good shape as regarding my study plan ?

i think since you have one a half month remaining then you should give nbme 7,13 an 15. Also give uwsa 1 and 2. You should give nbme 7 (6 weeks before) then nbme 13 ( 5 weeks before) and finally nbme 15 (2 weeks before). in between if possible you can give uwsa 1 (4 week before) and uwsa 2 (3 week before)... last two weeks just keep yourself free from any tests and just read first aid.

Default step 1 in april 2014

did you find any questions repeating from uworld or qbank?
I mean the topics that r focused in uworld and qbank (how similar is that to the real exam)
thanks

time required for prep: 8 and a half months

material used: kaplan lecture notes, kaplan videos, goljan rapid review (v imp), first aid and usmle medical ethics by conrad fischer.

preparation:
first i started with kaplan videos and kaplan lecture notes. these lay the basic foundation for the entire step 1 (except patho).it takes around 2-3 months for kaplan with videos. then for pathology i think goljan rapid review is best, since pathology forms 60-70% of questions a good book is a must.

SCORES:

uwsa 1 : 261
uwsa 2 : 265

nbme 7: 242 ( i missed three questions in this form)
nbme 13: 250
nbme 15: 250

exam on sept 18. i found the exam like nbme only, in terms of length of questions and its difficulty. time management is the key.

final result on october 9: 252

feel free to ask me anything.
thank you

Default Regarding nbme

Do we need to solve all the nbmes?? Are there any repetitions on the same concept or repetition of same questions?? If so how many repeats can we expect in the real exam??
My exam is towards the end of oct, I took nbme 12 2 months back got score in 190s so I am scared of low score and planning to take only 1 nbme a week or 10 days before exam.
Your advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanks!!

although there will be no exact questions from uworld or qbank in the real exam, the topics stressed on uworld are more likely to turn up in the real exam..

no you dont need to solve all the nbmes... i had the exact 3-4 questions from nbme 13 and 15... bt not more... give atleast one nbme 10 days before exam, and see where you stand.. if you get again get a low score i would say you need to work towards your weakness and atleast get in 220s..
