There is a 3 digit score. To pass you need 188. Average US score is around 224.
If you want to secure a good residency, especially if u an IMG.. you should aim at 240+

Good LUCK!

out of nothing...its a score not a percent!!! My guess
how exactly its calculated...no one really knows.

"The three-digit score is based on a theoretical maximum of 300, but this has not been documented by the NBME / FSMB."

1. It's not out of anything.
2. The 2 digit score (which is not used anymore) was NOT a percentile score.
3. Even if it was 230 wouldn't mean 9th percentile. (9th percentile means you are amongst the bottom 10%).

So don't get confused guys. Usmle provides a standardized score baaed on your performance. It's a statistical number with a mean and standard deviation.Just like IQ. Eg. If you have an IQ of 110, you don't say it's 110 out of X.
Some people do say that unofficial the theoretical maximum is 300 but some calculations say that it goes beyond that, depending on how OTHERS have performed on the questions attepted by you.

Bottomline - Don't worry about the scoring. Just know that you have a mean = 225. And the scores revolve around it. The more ahead of the mean, the better for an IMG.

To give you a perspective, you have to answer about 90 % of the questions correct to get a 250 in an NBME test. Not so sure it's the same for the real test as well.
Since you're still in 4th year, you would understand it better when you read your biostatistics.
