Question Mission impossible

Hi everyone, I'm a 50 year old Dutch general and trauma surgeon, who recently met the love of my life, who is working as an internist in the US. She doesn't want to work in Europe or learn Dutch and thinks I can work as a surgeon in the US. But the requirements to get your license there are pretty much comparable with running up mount Everest without oxygen. It seems that Americans only trust domestically trained doctors .

Although I past medical school in the past century I will give it a go at the USMLE and see if my old brain can cough up long forgotten knowledge about medicine. Does anybody has experience in starting this adventure after being registered for a long time as a medical specialist? I would like to know your experiences.

Good luck to anyone taking the exams!!

Max

I think you and her should choose between the following two options:

1) She comes to work in Europe.
2) You work in US in internal medicine or family medicine.

Working as a surgeon in the US at your age is next to impossible even with super high scores and connections in residency programs.

My aim is not just to discourage you, my aim to provide you with a reality check and correct solution to your issue.

Thanks for your reply! Appreciate it. Is none of the specialist training outside the US and Canada eligible for registration in the US after the USMLE? What are the requirements for family medicine? Just the USMLE or further training?
