That is a very very complicated question because the answer varies by where you live, how much you make and many many other things such as how much the mortgage on your house costs and how many kids you have in addition, of course to how much you get paid. I recommend not really worrying about that until you have a specific job you're thinking about.

For example, a family physician will be able to deduct the cost of running their office from their billings and then figure out a total income and then they will be taxed on that whereas for a hospital based ER physician who does not have their own office, they will be paid a salary and then they pay taxes on that - somewhere between 35 and 55% usually before deductions.

The exact salary will vary considerably depending on how hard you want to work and where you work and will be different for you than for anyone else so my recommendation right now is to get the average salaries from one of these websites and then if you really must try and get an exact figure take off about 40% and then see what happens. In reality, once you get those kinds of salaries, you'll get a clearer understanding of how much your final paycheque will be.

Remember though, we also have a major cost in terms of malpractice insurance that we need to worry about as well, so you have to consider the whole picture before you understand how much you take home.

Here is a website that gives you pre-tax average salaries - maybe it will help. Sorry I couldn't be more specific.
