Listening System-wise or Subject-wise Prep

I am preparing for usmle step 1. Can anybody advise me- will it be more effective to prepare systemwise or subjectwise? And how can that be comparatively better than the other, can you guys give your personal opinions.

I prefer subject wise over system wise and here is my reasoning:

Medicine is an interconnected discipline. For instance, let's take something as simple as hyperaldostronism. That's an endocrine problem but it affects multiple organ systems. So if you happened to be doing your endocrinology without touching CVS, Renal, Vascular etc... you will have a hard time understanding what exactly is going on and it will make you entire learning process that much more difficult.

For this reason I would strongly suggest going about it system wise, with the general layout set out by Kaplan:

Histology --> Embyro/Anatomy/Neruo --> Physiology --> Biochemistry --> Microbiology/Immunology --> Pathology --> Pharmacology --> Behavioural Sciences

With this set up you should be able to get a solid understanding of everything in a manner that makes sense.

Assuming you still have time and you're done going over your review material (Kaplan or what not) and read FA once the best way to go about it is do 2 blocks back to back (2 hours) then go take a short break for 30min-1hr.

When you come back go over the first block reading all the explanations even if you got the answer right. As you read through it open to the appropriate page in FA and annotate any information given in UWorld that is missing in FA, or perhaps an explanation to a concept in FA that you didnt previously understand. It should take you about 2hr - 2.5hr to complete. Just make sure not to write everything from UWorld, just the important stuff, and if you already know it and its in FA, there is no point in writing it down, you're just wasting time. Anyways, once you complete your first block review, take another break of 30min - 1hr.

Come back and go over the second block and do the same thing and that should take you about 2.5hrs again. So at the end of all of this you will have worked for about 2.5hrs + 2.5hrs + 2hrs = 7hrs. That's almost a whole days worth of work.

You can go to bed or relax after this if you feel comfortable, but I personally would go over the rote memorization subjects in FA for another hour or 2 (pharm, micro, formulas). Just go over these topics (alternating ) on a daily basis so when the time comes for the exam, the info is cemented in you head. There is very little understanding required in those subjects, you just gotta memorize facts, so just go over it.

That will take you to around 8-9hrs a day of studying which is pretty damn good (10-11hrs if you include the breaks). At this point just relax a bit and chill. This is only if you have time and arent pressed for time. There are about 2100 UWorld Qs, so this will take you about 1 month to complete the Qbank (Your second run through will be a lot quicker).

Anyways, after you complete the Qbank once, you should re-read FA front to back with your annotated info included and go for your second run through of UWorld, this time you can do more blocks per day.

These are just my thoughts, I havent taken my exam yet (its on Dec 17) so I dunno how successful this method is, but that's how I did it, so you can try it if you want, or better yet, look for comments from people who did well on the exam.

I think seraphim's method is excellent!
The only thing is that, It cannot be used properly if u have not read FA and no core learning material well.

Since your exams is in feb u can read FA now till ending of dec as u intersperse it with a block of uworld on the subjects or system u have covered well in random and timed mode and keep adding new systems u cover in uworld. This way u would go fast with uworld as well as solidify FA reading.

Great. I mean it's best to do uworld only after FA but when u are constrained with time then u may decide to start uworld leaving behind the subjects and systems u have not covered in FA so u can add those systems and subjects as part of the uworld questions u are solving as and when u complete them in FA. ( selective uworld). Becos I don't see any point in doing uworld to get those questions wrong before u fine them and do them in FA. It is better to do them in FA first so that when u meet it in uworld and u get it wrong then u learn it better and really understand why u got it wrong.
Doing uworld before FA makes u repeat notes in FA unnecessarily. Becos information in FA are not in a particular page they are somewhat scattered. Eg u can find info on H influenza on diff pages.

So my advice in short is that becos ur exams is in feb, for now( last two weeks of dec 2013) just do selective uworld as u completed FA. Then from January u can do more of uworld and check things up from the FA u have read.
