I haven't yet taken step 1 nor 2 ,, but according to many people step 1 takes around 5-6 months if you an old graduate or somewhat lesser time if you are a fresh graduate or have good academics during your med school. ...
Hope this helps. ...!!!

Depend of your base knowledge, as a general rule Step 1 is the most difficult exam, and people prepare the longest, for That one. Besides the exam content is very different, compared with ck. You should try to take an evaluation test in Kaplan or a NBME to see where do you stand, good luck

IMHO you are asking the wrong question.

The question should be "How much I need to know to get XXX score?"

Time it will take varies by the person depending o their prior knowledge, learning style and other commitments.

So,

1. Know everything in FA by Reading review books of your choice.

2. Do QBanks to practice what you have learned to find out if you can apply your knowledge to answer questions.

3. Take NBMEs to find out where you stand in relation to your desired score.

4. Once you get close to your desired score (+15) on at least two NBMEs, take the test.

It doesn't matter if it takes you 3, 6 or 12 months.
