Help Need some advice please!

Hey guys!

I've seen a lot of people on here give some great advice to others, so I hope you all can help me out

I have the step in two weeks

Free 150 (2 weeks ago) - 78% (less than half way through FA)
NBME 1 (3 days ago) - 231 (an hour after finishing DIT)
Finished Uworld, 61%

I'm going to either take NBME 7 or UWSA-2 at the end of this week, and then whichever of the two I don't take this week, i'll do a few days before the exam.

Right now I'm doing a modified TAUS method run through for the last two weeks, 2 UW blocks in the AM, then working on my weakest sections with FA and goljan tables/images/blue notes in the PM, according to whatever NBME-1's feedback says I suck at.

Two questions:

First Q:
Now I know that NBME-1 is probably not that relevant, and I don't know how NBME scaling and stuff works, but is the score I got on NBME-1 totally off? I figure if it is, I think im at least at a 220? Would I be right in thinking that?

My goal is to get above 230, hell a 225+ would be cool. Moreover, I don't want to fail lol

Second Q:
I'm 100% willing to put in any and all effort to get to where I need to go, I was just wondering if you guys feel it's possible for me to do it with only 2 weeks to go. Is what I'm planning on doing sufficient to get 230+?

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone! Please tell me if you guys think I'm on the right track or not

First let me say that I agree - you don't have much time left, but you're well on the way.

I like all the NBMEs but the exam has changed quite a bit since NBME 1 in terms of the kinds of questions asked. I also don't really like the free150 questions as predictors. They aren't good predictors either, as you know.

So you're right, we have here a few scores that are good indicators, but not the best summaries of how you're going to do in 2 weeks. That being said, 231 is a very hopeful sign.

Instead of NBME 2, I'd suggest 6. I'd also like to know your average percentage for the last 10 RANDOM UNUSED TIMED blocks on USMLEworld. If that average is over 70% you are heading for your 230+ score. Otherwise, you've got some more catching up to do.

Don't focus too much on the weaknesses that NBME 1 suggests you have. Some of those areas are lower yield now and I'm hearing these days that neuro especially MRIs and angiograms are very very high yield which are not tested very much in the first few NBMEs. Instead, I'd do a better overall coverage of the areas you think you are weak at and improve those.

And most of all - make a list of the areas you are forgetting most and go over them every night for the last 2 weeks...

U r on the way 2 230+ buddy. Cmplete yr FA twice. Knw everythng frm cover 2 cover, WORD 2 WORD. otherwise u wl hv 2 pay for it. Do nbme 7 as recent exam in nearest to 7th. 6th is undrestemator & 1 to 4th r non relevant. Believe me. Use yr 2 wks 4 jst FA.

Thanks for the reply brother, I appreciate it!

Unfortunately, my last 10 Uworld blocks were pretty much 61% as well. Not 70%, so yup, I have a long way to go..

I'm running through Uworld a 2nd time right now. 2 blocks in the morning, then maybe 6 hrs of reading at night.

I can't take NBME -6 because I saw it offline a while ago and studied with it, so it'd be useless to do it. But I will do NBME 7, however. Do you suggest I do that this week or save it till a few days before and do uwsa-2 this week?

I personally felt weak in some of the areas outlined by the nbme-1, heme and endo... but I went over goljan and FA for that, so hopefully I fixed it up a bit.

I did Doctors in Training, so I went over FA fully, but do you think I have enough time to go through it again? It's full of my notes from DIT and Uworld, so it'd help me a lot to re-read it.

For the neuro I am using HY Neuroanatomy for images and FA for the rest.

I have a big list of things I feel I'm weak at, but I haven't been having time to get through the list since I was focused on the nbme feedback. The list is just like various topics of subjects that I don't fully understand. And I think you're right, I'll start getting through that list tonight.

I just feel a bit hopeless sometimes, like I'm not on the right track or that I'm in for a rude awakening on the 28th (step 1 day)...I can't begin to tell you the amount of step 1 nightmares I've had lol

I had one last week where I dreamt I found a new section in FA entitled 'Spanish Medicine' and under the heading it just had one bullet point: 'Know Spanish.'

I was like maan how am I gonna learn spanish, I'm canadian!

Don't worry gunner - The 220 is in your grasp. Unfortunately, since you've done 6 and 7 and UW once already we no longer have useful markers that will help us decide with a lot of certainty, but don't worry. Just stay the course, cover your weak areas and then write it. I know others have suggested that NBME 1-4 are now useless, but I disagree to some extent. The format is not changed that much, just the style of the questioning and the material so if you get good scores on one other NBME you should write it. Also - did you do the UWSAs? they are not like the step all that much either but they are a good indicator of whether you'll end up in the 220's or in the 160s.

Hang in there!

Hey, sorry if I wasn't clear earlier, I have not done any UWSA's or NBME 7...

I will do NBME 7 this week sometime. If I do bad on NBME 7 I'll keep studying and take UWSA before the test to see if I'm in the realm of a good score.

Thanks for the advice bro, I definitely appreciate it

Sounds like a good plan man. If you don't feel ready, do the UWSA first and then form 7. That way if you are really far off (more than 30-40 points) you can leave form 7 till you are closer to the exam. It is the best approximation of the actual score you will get and you should leave it to the end.

Help Progress Update: NBME 7

As of today I have one week till test day...

Since I took NBME 1 I went over my weak areas in RR and FA, and did a whole bunch of UW questions.

I was planning to take UWSA-2 last week and then NBME-7 this Thursday...but I felt so weak in my knowledge I just decided to take NBME-7, the definitive assessor, last night, and see where I'm at.

I was expecting it to be really hard, since it's just like the step, but it wasn't that bad. I found it easier than Uworld, with a few insane questions. You can figure those out with logic though.

Unfortunately, since I read so many forums online...I found there were a few questions that I had seen ppl ask over the last 4-5 months on forums, so the question that was being asked felt kind of familiar to me, ie I could cut through the fog quicker and figure out what was really going on...I think there were maybe MAX. 10 of those (out of 200)

I was expecting to get a really terrible score, since my third block, I must've guessed 1/3 questions.

I ended up getting 600/244.

I wanted to ask: do you guys think this is inflated because I was familiar with questions/concepts that I had seen online previously?
If I am, do you think it's a HUGE inflation? Or am I at least in the 230's or something.

Thanks!

Thumbs Up I think your NBME 7 Prediction is correct

I don't think it's significantly skewed. The questions you've seen the forums are not necessarily answered correctly.
I'd say you are definitely in the 230s range if not in the 240s.
Go ahead and take the exam.

I agree - write it - a form 7 score is not that far off. You should be fine. Don't panic too much and try and stay as even as possible till exam day and on exam day itself

Good luck!
