Hi!

If you just entered your final year, apply for electives as soon as possible. You can only do electives while you are still a medical student, so try to make good use of the fact that you are still a student. Most hospitals want students to apply at least four months before the start of the elective, but it depends on the place you apply!!

As for which step to take first, it is really up to you.
Step 1 tests basic science (see the content description here: http://usmle.org/step-1/#content-description). Step 2 has two parts, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), which tests clinical knowledge using multiple choice questions, and Step 2 Clinical Skills, which tests your ability to talk to patients and come to a diagnosis.

Most people do Step 1 first, some start with Step 2 CK.
I started with Step 2 CS, which is what the least number of people do, I think.
The usual order for students in the US is Step 1 -> 2 CK -> 2 CS or Step 1 -> 2 CS -> 2CK.

One of the best things you can do is read the information on www.usmle.org.
This is the official homepage of the test and it will answer most or all of your questions.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Default help me devise a plan

I have thought of a plan....I request you to correct me wherever I am wrong
I have just begun final yr...and no step 1...most of the medschools in us require step 1 clearance for allowing electives..so I have a loss there
m planning to manage final yr and prepare for step one simultaneously..will give my final yr exams in nov...afterwhich I will get 2 month gap duringwhich I want to be thorough with step one and crack it
The issue inow face iswhere to fit in the electives...but my colg profs say thateven during internship at my own med school...the dean can allow us leave togo for electives and extend my internship...that is what I have thought as of now...going to meet the vice Dean tomorrow. ?..really tensed
I know I am late...but I had serious health issues last yr and couldnt prep for step one...
please do offer ur suggestions....thanku very much

I am not sure if you would be allowed to do electives in the US. It depends on if you will still be considered a student while you do your internship. If you are considered a student, then great and then I think that is a very good idea.
If you are not considered a student anymore, you are not allowed to do electives in the US. You would have to do an externship or observership.
