Idea!

Hey there, If you ask me neuroanatomy is much easier to understand if you have a good base on the physiolgy of the neural system, My advice would be to study the neuro physio chapter of BRS or Kaplan and then give it a go again. Neuro can be a hard to grasp subject but knowing your physio helps connects the dot

Im gonna give you some advice regarding Neuro but first let me give you a little background about my situation. I went to a Caribbean school and the dean decided, for some completely unknown reason, that he wanted to teach Neuro-anatomy/science. Anyways, he gave us 3 classes before he completely cancelled Neuro so I had to learn Neuro from scratch. With that in mind, I'm gonna tell you how I learned my Neuro. And just for reference, I got a 240 on my Step 1. So you are better off getting advice from people with amazing scores like 250+, but this should at least set you on the right track.

My Advice:
  • Use Kaplan videos and lecture notes for Neuro
  • Lecturer starts of messy and bad but improves as you continue
  • Take as much time as needed..DONT RUSH! (I took a complete month out of my 6month study plan for neuro).
  • If your only problem is Neuro HISTO and not Neuro ANATOMY/SCIENCE then you are pretty safe. I don't recall getting a single question regarding the histology of neurons and what not. They mostly test the macro components like spinal tracts, cortical tracts, visual tracts and stuff like that, and the effects of certain lesions and of course pathology.
  • Just ride Kaplan out. It is by far the best resource for the USMLE (except for Pathology)

For things like CT Scans, Xrays, MRIs etc Kaplan is not enough, and that goes for all subjects. In fact, non of the major resources are enough. You need to go online and look up some images and use the images from UWorld and FA. For path images I highly suggest going to Webpath. As for other images, just use google. Yes, I think its worth your time going over some HY images (i.e. Circle of Willis) because its very possible you could get a question on that. Also, make sure you know the CNS blood supply well and the resulting deficits from arterial occlusion.
