RBC Starvation and RBCs?

Hey guys,

I'm reading my FA again and was wondering what is the primary source of energy for RBCs during starvation because they can't use ketones? Please let me know whenever you have a chance.

Thanks and happy studying!

No matter what RBC will always use glucose as well as the brain.

But in severe situations the brain can switch to ketones to allow shunting of glucose to the RBC.
