Default question about caribbean schools

I am currently a student at AUA in the Caribbean. I've been hearing a lot about the trouble that IMGs will have in the 2019 match and beyond. I was wondering will it get so hard that people that score pretty decent will not even be able to get a family medicine or internal medicine residency? I am wondering this because I want to know whether I should continue with medicine if at the end I might not get anything?

I think the upper specialties of residency such as plastic surgery are always tough for IMGs as well as AMGs. So those are very competitive.

As far as gaining residencies such as family med and internal med, every year the same rumors go around about it being tough for IMGs to get residencies in any field. I've been hearing this since 2000 until 2013. Factually, that is not true and many of the specialties are filled with IMGs. You may not get the location you like but there is always a demand for doctors.

I would recommend studying hard and doing well on your step 1 score. Keep in mind that there are always opening slots available for IMGs and this will continue as the years go by. The population in the US is increasing as the years pass by and therefore logically will need more physicians. I think that is the essential part of doctors as they are always needed.

As always, medicine is a life commitment and I wish you all the best in your future. The decision to chose medicine or not is yours.

take care
