Hiatal Hernia versus Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

what would be the difference between congenital diaphragmatic hernia and esophageal hiatal hernia? both have herniation of esophagastric contents into the pleural cavity, right, so would the differences be anatomic in nature?

Hiatus hernia will contain only stomach, and results in reflux symptoms. These are central, where the oesophagus goes through the diaphragm (can't remember what this is called...)

CDH can contain various abdominal organs, and will cause respiratory symptoms do to lung compression. These tend to occur laterally, at a weakness in the diaphragm.

I don't really understand how you got them mixed up.

Hiatus hernia occurs later in later in life and it's an acquired disorder and it's involves herniation of the gastroesophageal junction (or part of the stomach in the case of the paraesophageal type) up through the esophageal haitus which is a central opening in the diaphragm.

While congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a congenital disorder seen usually in newborns and is life threatening and it's due to peripheral weakness in the diaphargam and is most commonly on the left side.

Now congenital hernia occurs more typically on the posterolaterally left side, correct?

yes left side leading to left lung hypoplasia.
