Smile Just back from the exam

Hi all,

I did my step one 2 days ago, just got back to my country.
NBME 7 (5days before exam) : 660(258)

My exam started early (7:43am), so cortisol levels still very high, in addition to the caffeine I took.
The first two blocks went very smoothly, the 3rd had some tricky questions, the 4th, 5th, 6th blocks also went quite smoothly with occasional tricky ones.
The last block, was doable, but I was very tired, thanks to the caffeine I took again during the last break , I was able to scale through.
For me, the exam was a simplified version of USMLE World. Similar in question construction and setting, but way better in terms of clinical clues. The extra clues made the difference.
It was pathology and pathophysiology all through, with endocrine, and both renal and CVS physiology following closely. I had the usual arrows, the charts and graphs. Also got some angios and 2 doable murmurs. No sequential question at all.
I did not see any experimental question, though there were some questions I had no clue about, I wouldn't know if to call them experimental.

For those still preparing for this exam, please do the NBME and the Free 150 official USMLE questions (very high yield).
Overall, it was concepts that was more important, with memorization providing the building blocks and helping with the few direct questions.

I await my result with cautious optimism.
In view of the 2 wks break in January, I'm not sure when result will be out, in case, anyone has some idea about when to get the result, pls kindly inform.

congratulations on being done with step 1. I have a question, were the questions the similar length as are in UW or were they lengthy as compared to the ones in UW ?

@ sparco,
i will say the length of the questions varied . the direct questions were one to two lines, these were quite few.
The clinically oriented questions where mostly 3 to 4 lines, with occasional 8 liners.
lab results sometimes make the question look lengthy, but on closer look they are doable.
UWorld definitely has a good grasp on the format.

Congrats! How did you find the ethics / behavioural science questions? Were they really crazy or more or less the situations Kaplan covers?

@ ashish,
the behavioural/ethics questions did not really follow kaplan's pattern. They were basically testing the basics, what helped more is that one page of FA 2010 which addressed ethics, but u still have to do kaplan for a broader view.

@kemoo,
I got 2 media ques, in both, the clinical clue was quite sufficient, the murmurs were clear enough.

For me, the last 1 mth was UW ,then FA for last 1wk back to back, then NBME 7, free 150 and goljan .
All d best.

@kemoo,
3days to d exam, i culd only do passive reading, so i did goljan audios high yield areas(fluid,nutrition,cvs,resp,renal,GI,hema). His jokes were quite anxiolytic.

@varunshetty,
The exam's difficulty is similar to NBME 7,but its far more clinical.
I did not do UW self assessment, but i completed UW, and i will say the exam is simpler than UW, though content and structure are similar. I mean the exam gives more clues than UW.

i was kinda wondering how long does it take to finish UW? a month is enough or more? i mean if u can give me an estimate of daily UW of 6 hours? how many days will it take ?

in case of kaplan qbank, how long will it take too?

the point of asking such question is to estimate the time needed after i finish my original study from the lecture notes.....thnx

@hypermedic,
It all depends on ur plan.
For me, i used kaplan qbank, subjectwise after each 1st reading of lecture notes.
I started UW 6wks to my exam, 1mth subscription, 2 random unused timed blocks per day, took me about 24 days to complete. Then reviewed my wrong ques. Each block took about 5hrs to complete.
My advice is to do UW when u are almost ready..
