Question Definition of Fresh Graduate?

I have a question here. I have been reading a lot about being fresh graduate. What is a fresh graduate. 1 year since graduation, 3 years, 5 years????? What fresh exactly means?????? I graduate in 2009, is that fresh?????? I'm hoping on getting match for residency in 2012. I'm going to be fresh graduate by that time??????

Attendings working in the US have been telling me that the preferable range is less than 5 years from graduation; the earlier the better. Also, CV gaps are frowned upon. They'll ask you what were you doing all that time?

I think the timing will be the period between the year of graduation and the time you apply for the match.
