Planning Subject-Wise questions not random

hi..first of all i want to say this forum is excellent for anyone preparing for steps.. ppl here r really helping n give good advise when needed

i hv just started preparing for step 1..i hv gone through all dvds of kaplan..planning to give it in august..
going through the usual golden combination kaplan..goljan..FA..UW ..nbme

i really dont like the formula 1st read..2nd read..3rd read..i want to finish physio first then revise it fron FA on daily basis (equivalent to 2nd read ) then do the UW questions topic wise...then start the next subject with revision fron FA n UW...n so on..

then later ill revise solely FA then do the 2nd round of UW (random)..then do nbmes..

my question is it ok to omit 2nd read n revise it on daily basis n do UW topic wise as i remember more easily with questions...n i find 2nd reading boring...instead i prefer to revise it next day early morning...is it ok??
n i hv option to take only one qbank which ill do topic wise...i know many of ppl here say that its not an good idea to do topic wise but i think i remember more while going topic wise...as i said before i dont hv option to do other qbank..so is it ok to do it topic wise then later on random in 2nd round????

Default Move on to the questions after the first read!

I agree with you that reading books again and again can be boring, especially when it comes to those bulky Kaplan books! What I did is that I did all Kaplan lecture notes + the videos (in fact, I mainly watched the videos, and skimmed the notes). Then I read First Aid. Then I started doing UW in a random, timed mode. It was tough and frustrating. My scores weren't great at first, but they improved. But I think doing questions in a random, timed mode from the start is an important key to success. You will get acclimatized to the format of the exam, learn to manage your time well, and be ready for tough unexpected questions. So by the end of a 2 months subscription of UW, you'll be very well-prepared and you'll feel very confident, leaving a final month or so for a less difficult qbank like Kaplan, literally chilling at a time where others are sitting on their nerves.

I don't think you should read Kaplan notes more than once, as the point of this exam is how to answer questions, not how much you memorize. No matter how much you read you'll miss stuff that only questions can point out.

However, if there's a book that you should read again and again, it'd be the First Aid. It's a very important book that you should read at least thrice.

Thumbs Up Thanks Haisook

Thanks... u r right ..then ill finish the 1st read of kaplan n revise it next day with kaplan n FA..may be its good to add notes from kaplan to FA...short one line notes...it will take time but in this way i can get rid of 2nd or 3rd read..n in this way i can memorize more...

n then ill revise FA solely with added notes n start UW random right from start..

Thumbs Up I like your approach

Your approach is wonderful, it's somewhere along the lines of ZumZum Method for USMLE Step 1 Preparation Schedule and Plan which is a very successful method
