Unhappy Low step 1 Score

My name is Pramod an IMG, I recently gave my step 1 . I am glad I cleared the exam but sad as I couldn't achieve what I wanted to.
I am completely heart broken because of my poor score,
I would like to know if there is really is any hope moving on.???

My details are given below.
I am IMG from India.
Graduated in 2010.
Have one research paper in my name , have done 1 presentation, and the paper is on the way of publication.
I have done another research as a collaboration project with a few students from USA- NY
I got honors for research in my graduation . both related to surgical oncology--- (tht was my dream job.)
step1 score - 80.....
no green card, no visa.
planin to get observership soon..

the reason I am writing this is because in this present state I am confused, heartbroken and do not know what to do next ??
Any advise good or bad would be greatly valued .

Thank you

Arrow Cheer up

Your research and the coming observerships would definitely help you.

Cheer up, get a high score in CK, pass the CS from first attempt, get nice US LoRs, build connections in residency programs and you should be fine.

When do USCE in USA you'll get to know residents, attendings, and fellows. These personal connections will ultimately lead you to people who are in charge of residency programs.
This is pretty much the story with most people except those who have severe antisocial behaviors.

Hi rasheed .
Thank you very much for the reply.
I was wondering if u know any like this, ie low score n still managed to get in s residency . if so could u pls tell me wht spot did they manage to get?
The thought tht some one else has been through this n still made it to the end brings more relief ....

I also want to apologize for earlier when I was preparing for my step 1 , I never went through the low score post , never tried to cheer any one up, coz I never knew how bad this feels..
Now knowing this, will make sure to help any 1 with this or even worse situuation, at least try ..

I personally know 2 people with much lower scores than you (>1 attempt) that matched to IM and Family respectively. IM in New York, Family in a midwestern state I can't remember - both were University programs.

I also know of people with mid-high 80s that have 1 interview per year and haven't matched in at least 5 years.

There are thousands, literally thousands of these kinds of stories.

Trust me, the observerships and research are eventually what determine where you match. For now, just focus on doing as well as you can on step 2.

Hi 58drPramod,
I haven't sat for any of the Steps yet but...
I would have to tell you that you have the opportunity to do clinical experience in the US; that's something that many other people who got low scores, don't....so, try your best on your next step, get to know the right people, keep in touch, and don't give up man. I think u are on the right track.

Default Low step 1 with US fellowship

Hi,

As with many, I am frustrated with a very low step 1 score of 188/75. I graduated in 2006 (Bangladesh), did an MPH (Australia) in 2009, completed 1 year fellowship in a US medical school in 2010-11 (mostly, observing clinical encounters, creating health literacy materials for university hospital on clinical topics, presented in two national conferences in California and Minnesota). Won two international awards for leadership and excellence in education (Australia and the US). Currently involved in pandemic influenza research for an international NGO funded by the CDC. Going to sit for step 2 CK in Feb 2012. Would be able to secure at least one strong LOR from a US MD.

I don't wanna get bogged down by my low step 1. However, what realistic chances I have for an IM/FM residency anywhere in the US (excepting Alaska), provided I pass CK/ CS?

Please, advise.
