Default Step 1 made me see a psychiatrist...

Hi, I'm an IMG, graduated in 2012, got my score report last week with a step 1 score of 212. I'm really disappointed. I scored a 245 on NBME's, and was very confident on the exam day. Unfortunately just when the exam started, during the first block I freaked out, went into anxiety and messed up the exam.

I have passed CS, first attempt, and have done a 2-month observership in USA. Also, I have worked as a research associate in Internal Medicine for 9 months in my country (still working, going to be an year in 3 months), involved in a study which is going to be the largest study conducted in South-Asia. Also 2 of my papers are gone for publication.

But this unexpected step 1 score has ruined it all. I don't know what to do. Can someone guide me? Should I still go for step 2, or game over?

Considering I'm an IMG and No visa. Will be seeing a psychiatrist soon about the stupid panic attack I got during the exam. I worked so hard over this, everything fell apart.

I will appreciate honest opinions and experiences please.

Thanks.

If you arre thinking of internal medicine,i think you have great chances. You have research experience, publications...so, keep on trying to get ecfmg certified...try to get research in the us, i think it will not be that difficult considering you have publications...As for the panic attack during the exam...I think that it is something happening to many people...maybe you got stressed up because of the ''crash'' test that they do on the exam...some really difficult questions in the begining just to mess your confidence...Anyway, you cannot do anything to change your scores, you can only improve your cv, so just do research research research...i know someone who matched to neurosurgery with lower score but spent many years in research...considering you want IM, i thhink you are in a great position...a psychiatrist will help you improve your confidence...The exam day is something i am afraid of(i haven't taken the steps yet)...but i will try to work on that, i will try to find out how...Anyway, you have great chances for IM...keep going...

Default Don't give up!

I would recommend you to go to Facebook and join Dr Barone's mafia. Lately he's been sharing testimonials of people that failed steps, got low scores and still got residency opportunities.

Don't give up!! I can relate to you, but you have to move forward, seems like you have a good CV with the published papers and what not, you got a low score, it sucks specially after being preparing for this steps, but there's no point on staying stuck over that, doing so it's not going to improve your score. Go to therapy if you must, talk about it, digest it, get yourself together and keep moving forward!! Who said this path is easy?

Good luck!!

Dude, you are still good to go. You have a very solid CV with those observerships and publications. And congratulations on those, I envy you for that. I have 0 publications, and currently desperately looking for some observership. You step 1 score will close some doors for you, but not all.

Try to get a very good score on step 2ck, and it will balance things out a bit.

Hey! the day before yesterday I sent 2 replies with a link to Dr Barone's Facebook profile but it said they needed review and I guess they just didn't post it.

Go to Facebook and look for his profile, then send the request. He accepted mine and even sent a friendly reply

YES!
I have not accepted the "Game Over".
I'll be visiting a psychiatrist and I'll be attempting CK as well.
I just really really hope that my publications and the time I worked as a Research Associate helps cover up my low step 1 score...
