Default Kaplan course advice!

Hi,,I'm a fifth year student ,studying in the middle east, summer starts in about a month and a half,,I was planning to start my preparation for the step1 exam with kaplan lecture notes and the videos,,my basics are really week!! I was depending that this issue will e solved when I start preparing for the step1 this summer,,but this week the university made an announcement about a Kaplan course and that they made an affiliation with kaplan and there will be a review course for 9 weeks where doctors from kaplan are coming here to teach us ,,so I'm really confused ,I'm thinking to enroll in this course which will cost 3700 USD and I'm afraid I may not be able to study this summer alone and that I need this course,,at the same time I know my basics are week so I may not understand a thing in this high yield course,,I'm really confused whether or not to take this course ,,I've read about the doctors coming and they are one of the top and I don't wanna miss the chance..at the same time I'm afraid that I will waste my time because live lectures will be from 8 am to 4 pm..so i will have about 6 hours only per day to study alone!! I wish that you guys can guide me from your experiences..thank you

Hey House_Muayyad,

The kaplan prep course is pretty much the same as the videos that are available to many other students. Not much difference between the two.
Only visible difference is that the prep course does not cover everything in the textbooks so you will have pages with no notes in your texts. The pace is too quick and you will retain little.

I took the kaplan 7 week prep course. Found it a waste of time and money.
It also takes those 7 weeks away from your study plan. Save your money!

I would recommend you buying the kaplan hy videos and that's it. They refer to the First Aid textbook pages and therefore is useful.

You can watch the regular and high yield videos at home or library and go at your own pace while covering all the material in the books. I had many colleagues who did that and felt more prepared for their exam than me.

hope that helps.

good luck

my friend, i think it all depends, probably doctor2k14 had stronger basics? (dont mean to especulate, correct me if im wrong) the thing is i think is a good choice for people with weak basics, as doctor2k14 says the center prep is just watching the videos, which you can do at home, however some people need the "reinforcement" of watching more people study, etc so they prefer the center prep due to this, if youre ok studying on your own at home, library then it would be a waste of money for center prep.

however for live lectures it is TRUE that its the same stuff as in the videos, but in live prep is all about REINFORCEMENT, right now while doing uworld i can recall more stuff that i saw during live prep when the doctors repeated and repeated the same stuff that when i saw in the videos, i dont know, maybe for some people it works for some it doesnt. you have to analyze what type of study person you are and decide according to that.
here is a post a person asked similarly and people made opinions which i think you may find helpful.
goodluck

Hello.
I think the same as drpisho. All depends on your background. I passed the CenterPrep course, it helped me a lot to understand the books. Also you have the option to watch online video from your home. Many people have passed the exam with good score, doing kaplan videos and books , and others resources (golja o pathoma, FA, UW.......). I think, you don't need to spend money on LivePrep course(it is good but it's expensive and you'll learn the same), that's my opinion. good luck
